Lance had only time to talk to his men and eat something handed to him by Maurice, before the telephone rang.
They had one big ship container where all the quilts were laid out for the men to sleep in. Now everyone wasn't in need of resting, as the 'war' had only just begun. But later, it would be problematic if the shrill sound of the phone would wake everyone every time it echoed through the container.
Lance could turn it on 'silent', but what if something went wrong inside the bunker? For that reason, it should only be used when necessary from the side of the bunker.
Sure, they could have built a room that would enclose the phone, giving one privacy. They could even build a damn castle on this place if they had the time.
Now they had to be content with what they had archived for the occupants of the bunker in such a short time. Everything extra had to wait and could only be put together slowly.
Thanks for helping the Author! As a reward for answering and an apology for the Author being so forgetful, I will put a part of a picture in the comments of a character that will neither be seen nor spoken about.....but they will be added at the end of the novel...
If you don't want to be spoilered, don't look!

Maybe I will delete the picture snipped later again; I am not sure yet, hehe
