Chương 6: First Pal #6

After spending half an hour breaking the strange blue glowing rock, I finally returned to the workbench, the hard-earned Baldium Fragments in hand. With a sense of accomplishment, I carefully placed the materials into the crafting interface on my wristwatch.

The Pal Sphere materialized before me, an egg-shaped contraption with golden inscriptions and a crystalline structure. It almost looked like a Pokéball, but with an otherworldly twist.

I held the sphere in my hand, muttering to myself, "Looks like a Pokéball, but weirder."

Vito appeared beside me, his curiosity piqued. "What's that?"

"It's from a video game I played as a kid," I explained, still examining the intricate designs on the Pal Sphere. "It was about capturing strange creatures that were like animals but not quite, and training them."

"Is this the same world?" Vito asked, a hint of skepticism in his voice.

I shook my head. "No, I would have recognized it if that were the case." I paused, trying to piece together the fragmented memories and oddities of this new reality. "But I do remember hearing something about a new game that was supposedly a rip-off of the one I played as a kid."

Vito chuckled mockingly. "Well, aren't you luckier than a cat with nine lives...."

I scoffed, feeling a wave of frustration. "Lucky? I don't feel lucky at all. I'm more confused than anything. First, I wake up in the body of the most wanted man in New York, and now I find myself here, in this bizarre place."

Vito's grin widened. "Well, look on the bright side. At least you've got me for company."

I rolled my eyes, not feeling particularly cheered up by his presence. "Yeah, because a sarcastic voice in my head has always been at the top of my Christmas list..."

"Well, then, it looks like Christmas came early... and hey, it's better than being alone, isn't it?" Vito retorted, his tone more serious.

I didn't answer, instead focusing on the Pal Sphere in my hand. This device, whatever it was, might hold the key to survival in this world. I needed to understand it, to master it, if I was going to find a way out of here—or at least make some sense of this place.

As I inspected the Pal Sphere, a beep from the wristwatch diverted my attention. I glanced at the screen and saw a new task: weaken any pal until it was vulnerable, then capture it by throwing the Pal Sphere at it. I muttered to myself, "It really is like Pokémon."

"Did you see where that little cat from earlier went?" I asked Vito, hoping to locate an easy target.

Vito shrugged, a smirk playing on his lips. "Saw a bunch of them beyond the bridge."

Sighing, I resigned myself to the task at hand. "Looks like I might need more spheres and a weapon," I said, turning back to the workbench.

After another hour of crafting, I ventured past the bridge, tightly gripping the wooden club I had just finished. The short walk was filled with an eerie calm, the quiet broken only by the occasional rustle of leaves and the distant calls of unknown creatures.

I found myself standing in a small clearing beyond the lake. As I scanned the area, I didn't spot any of the cat creatures. Instead, I found myself face to face with yet another strange creature. It was about the height of a child, resembling a fluffy ball of white wool with small yellow horns and a pair of similarly colored eyes.

Its face, peeking out from the wool, stared at me with an expression of innocent curiosity.

Vito appeared beside me, chuckling. "Well, what a cute little guy. Hurry up and wack it on the head already..."

I winced, feeling a pang of guilt. "Do you even have a heart?" I asked, my voice tinged with frustration. "I could've easily beaten that weird cat what with the dirty looks it kept giving but this little guy is just too adorable..."

The creature blinked at me, its eyes wide and trusting. I felt a lump in my throat. Vito's laughter echoed in my head, mocking my hesitation. "Come on, John. You want to survive, right? Then do what needs to be done, and make it quick. It's starting to get dark."

I took a deep breath, steeling myself. I knew Vito was right. If I wanted to survive in this world, I had to play by its rules. But that didn't make it any easier.

"Sorry, little guy," I muttered, gripping the club tighter. I took a step forward, raising the weapon. The creature didn't move, its eyes still fixed on me with that same innocent curiosity.

Before I could second-guess myself, I swung the club. The creature let out a startled bleat, stumbling backward. I felt a pang of guilt, but that instantly vanished as it began to jump around, its expression of curiosity turning into an angry glare.

Letting out an angry bleat, the creature put its arms on the ground and began rolling toward me with the resolve of a speeding truck. And yet, it was so slow, I merely had to step aside to dodge, allowing it to roll past me. I watched in puzzlement as it stopped some distance away, lying on its back with a dizzy expression.

Vito appeared beside me once more, bursting into laughter. "What kind of idiot do you have to be to get killed and eaten by these things? Are you sure that chick wasn't trying to pull your leg or something?"

I shook my head, a faint smile playing on my lips. "This looks like a beginner area. Considering the woman's gear, she likely ventured deeper into the island, where she and her friends encountered some genuinely dangerous creatures. I'd wager good money that she came here because it's safe."

"Safety, huh? Well, let's see if you can catch this little one," Vito said, still chuckling.

I approached the dazed creature, feeling a twinge of reluctance. It was hard to feel threatened by something so small and fluffy. I gripped the wooden club and gave it a few gentle whacks, just enough to weaken it without causing too much harm.

The creature let out another bleat, more pitiful this time, and I quickly took out the Pal Sphere. I hesitated for a moment, then threw it at the creature. The sphere hit it squarely, opening from the middle and floating into the air. The creature turned into blue light and was absorbed into the sphere, which immediately closed.

The sphere pulsated several times in the air, then flew back into my hand. A notification appeared on my wristwatch: "Task Complete. Wool and Lamball Mutton acquired."

"Well, that was something," I muttered, inspecting the sphere. It felt warm in my hand, and I couldn't help but marvel at the strange technology.

Vito leaned over my shoulder, his curiosity piqued. "What now? Gonna start a farm or something?"

I shrugged. "I don't know. Maybe..." I said with a sigh. "Either way, it looks like I still have one more hour or two of daytime, so I'll try to capture a couple more pals before heading back..."

...

The moon hung high in the sky, casting a silvery glow over the makeshift camp. I sat by the campfire, the warmth a comforting contrast to the cool night air. My eyes were glued to a sight I could hardly believe: Cattiva, the same strange cat creature I had encountered earlier, was standing near a large boulder, swiping at it with its claws.

With each swipe, small rocks chipped away, scattering on the ground. Nearby, Lamball worked diligently, carrying the chipped rocks and taking them to a wooden chest I had built within my house.

Vito appeared beside me, his expression as wide-eyed as mine. "You can't judge a book by its cover," he said, shaking his head in amazement.

I chuckled, leaning back on my hands. "Good thing I didn't let the Cattiva hit me before I captured it. Those claws are no joke."

The last few hours of daylight had been a whirlwind of activity. After capturing the Lamball, I had ventured around the lake, hunting more pals. Alongside Lamball and Cattiva, I also managed to capture Chikabi, a chicken-like pal with the same short stature and boundless energy.

Each capture felt like a small victory, a step toward mastering this bizarre new world.

Upon returning to the base, I had found my next task: building a Pal Box. It was the foundation piece for the base, and as I inspected it, I realized it could be used to deploy the pals I captured to work at the base.

With a few quick adjustments, I set Lamball, Cattiva, and Chikabi to work. Their efficiency was astounding, and the base began to take shape rapidly.

Using the wool from the Lamballs I had caught, I built beds for myself and the pals. The simple structure provided a sense of comfort and stability in this strange land. Now, as I watched my new companions work tirelessly, I felt a sense of accomplishment and a glimmer of hope.

Vito broke the silence, his tone curious. "So, what's next, John?"

I sighed, feeling the weight of the day's efforts. "Nothing for now. I've gathered some red berries from the nearby bushes and water from the lake to feed myself and the little ones. I think I'll just hit the hay and get back to doing tasks tomorrow."

I couldn't help but smile at the sight of the Cattiva stretching its limbs before turning away from the boulder and heading toward its bed, followed by the Lamball and the Chikabi.

Letting out a tired sigh, I also headed for my bed.
