Chapter 43: A World Without Tomorrow
The weightlessness vanished suddenly.
"Thud!"
Alex flew out from the portal of light and landed hard on the ground, letting out a groan.
"Damn it!"
Feeling the pain from the impact, Alex gritted his teeth. He seriously wondered if he had a grudge against teleportation.
Since his transmigration to this world, not a single teleportation had landed him safely on his feet. The first time, he was thrown into a horde of the undead in the Dark World.
The second time, he ended up right in front of Medusa, forcing him into an unplanned boss fight.
Upon returning to the main world, his first attempt at star travel had him separated from the other two. And now this... It seemed he was just destined to have bad luck with teleportation.
"What rotten luck!"
Muttering complaints, Alex stood up and quickly scanned his surroundings. To his relief, he wasn't in a monster nest this time.
Instead, he was in a dark, narrow alleyway with tall concrete walls on either side. In the distance, he could hear the honking of cars.
This scene felt both familiar and strange to Alex. It resembled the everyday sights from his past life, yet it felt foreign because his body no longer belonged to this world.
"Hey, guys, look who we have here!"
As Alex took in the nostalgic view, a disruptive voice rang out. He turned to see three scruffy, blonde-haired men smirking at him.
"Who would've thought we'd find a stray cat here? Hey there, rich kid."
The leader of the trio sneered, cracking his knuckles as he took a step towards Alex.
"This is our turf, the Krafters' territory. I don't know why you're here, but don't you think you owe us an apology?"
"..."
Okay, scratch that. The neighborhood he lived in during his past life wasn't this chaotic.
"Sigh..."
Alex sighed as he looked at the three thugs before him.
"Well, sorry about this..."
Before the words had fully left his mouth, Alex dashed forward like a shadow. He didn't use his sword, instead delivering a powerful punch to the leader's chest.
The man let out a muffled grunt and was sent flying backward, crashing to the ground ten meters away.
"Boss!"
The two underlings cried out in shock. One of them pulled out a switchblade, but before he could act, Alex grabbed his head and slammed it into the ground. The unlucky thug collapsed, bleeding from his nose.
"Help, help!"
Everything happened in an instant. From the moment Alex knocked down the leader to dealing with his lackeys, it took less than five seconds.
The last thug finally realized what was happening and screamed for help, but Alex quickly grabbed him by the throat and pinned him against the wall.
"Shh... Quiet down. I just want to ask you a few questions."
Alex's demeanor was calm as he faced the thug. He was no longer the same person who had first been transmigrated.
He had fought cultists, dealt with the undead, danced with the abyss in dreams, and just faced the Lich King. If this was a normal world, Alex had nothing to fear.
But...
"It's definitely not a normal world."
Walking out of the alley, Alex counted the money he had taken from the thugs and sighed. He approached a store window and looked at the TV inside. The newscaster was excitedly reporting the latest news.
"Today, five years later, we have finally secured our first victory! Here is footage from Verdun..."
As the newscaster spoke, the screen showed crowds cheering and waving their hands. Armed armored vehicles sped down the road, with soldiers standing up and waving at the surrounding people. Cheers erupted, and the atmosphere was one of immense joy and excitement.
The camera cut back to the smiling newscaster, who continued to report.
"Remarkably, this victory had very low casualties and minimal damage. Truly, it is a remarkable achievement! All thanks to the newly developed powered combat suits. With these suits, even a short training period can turn soldiers into super warriors, ready to take the fight to the aliens!"
Yes, aliens.
This was a world where humanity was fighting against extraterrestrial invaders.
From the information Alex gathered from the thugs, five years ago, mysterious aliens arrived on Earth and launched an assault.
These aliens, referred to as "Morphs" by humans, wreaked havoc from the start. Faced with this sudden threat, humanity was nearly defenseless.
Over the past five years, the aliens had almost taken over all of Europe. But just yesterday, humanity finally scored their first victory against the aliens.
Initially, Alex had no idea what world this was until he saw a famous actor in a military uniform on TV and those aliens that looked like bundles of wires. Only then did he remember the name of this world.
[War For Tomorrow.]
This was a sci-fi movie with a simple plot: aliens invade Earth, and humanity is losing the war. The protagonist, a PR officer named Jack Miller, is forced to the front lines and finds himself reliving the same day every time he dies, gaining knowledge and skills to fight the aliens.
The plot is straightforward. Jack Miller is thrown into combat, dies, and wakes up on the day he was sent to the front lines, over and over again.
He learns to fight, meets a female soldier with the same experience, and together they use their knowledge to find and kill the alien leader, saving Earth.
The movie was popular among game developers like Alex because it was essentially a story of a player repeatedly loading save files to beat a boss. Some joked that except for the "dying to load save" part, it was a cross-dimensional benefit!
Honestly, Alex felt a kinship with Jack Miller's character now, as it reminded him of his time in Free world... better not dwell on that; it's too painful.
Who would have thought he would transmigrate into a movie world?
Before coming here, Alex thought he would end up in another game world, since his first transmigration was into a game world, and the Free World's Dark Souls world also seemed like a game world. So he expected the third instance to be a Western fantasy game world as well.
But it turned out to be a sci-fi movie world.
So, what should he do next?
Watching the newscaster on the screen, Alex pondered. The main plot of this world was simple. He knew exactly where the alien boss was, but what was his mission? If it was to join the military and fight those monsters, Alex wasn't interested.
He had just fought his way out of the main world and wasn't about to volunteer for more punishment.
"Ding."
As Alex was lost in thought, a soft chime sounded, and the next moment, a line of system text appeared before him.
