The Smile of Control

"Just eating or were you two eating each other?" Alicia asked playfully, looking at Yina, who wanted to run away from this place.

"Maybe, but I have a question, why should we give you explanations?"

"Because if you don't, I can report you to the teacher, but don't worry, I won't say anything." Alicia nodded emphatically. "I guess that's fine. However, I'm still the class president, Jon. Once I see you doing something inappropriate, I'll report you immediately, okay?"

'You're my little puppy, stay like that and you'll get a treat for being a good boy.'

'What? I said it's better to have a corrupt mind than a dirty mouth, but Alicia seems to take it to the next level.' Yina used her powers to understand Alicia's intentions in getting so close to Jonathan.

"Um... I wouldn't do those things, I think." Contrary to Yina's expectations, Jonathan responded passively.

'Eh? I was sure I'd scare him or something more... How boring.'

"That's not true, we're just friends." Yina moved closer to Jonathan to prevent this dirty class president from insinuating things with her dirty thoughts.

Finally, Yina dared to speak to someone other than just her friend, and that made her feel a little scared.

"Maybe just friends." While her train of thought accelerated, Jonathan had successfully repelled the persistent attacks from the class president.

"I'll let it slide that you two are weird, I guess it would be illogical if you weren't considering what you do all day." Alicia turned around.

Then, the three of them returned to class together.

"Alicia, have you heard anything about Nick? Many are worried, so I was wondering if you know anything." Jonathan asked, a bit more interested.

'Lie, you're not interested.' Yina thought, a bit annoyed by Jonathan's acting; she wondered if he was also pretending to be her friend.

"Nothing yet, many say he fought as he always does, but this time someone beat him." Alicia wasn't very interested in the arrogant idiot Nick. The idiot deserved whatever had happened to him.

...

When they got to the classroom, everything continued as normal until the class started.

Meanwhile, at the Private Hospital in Detroit, Nick lay in bed with bandages all over his body.

"What do you mean you don't have enough evidence!?" Nick shouted loudly at the detective.

"Kid, don't shout at me. We're doing our best. The only things we found at the scene are your belongings, blood, and some ashes. Although these ashes are suspicious since they're recent, it's obvious they can't be used as evidence for the serious case you're accusing a thirteen-year-old of." The Detective was annoyed with this man.

So Nick asked, "What about the knife? Shouldn't there be fingerprints? I didn't see him wearing gloves, his hands were covered in blood and so was his clothes."

For anyone else, this question might be feasible, but for the detective, it was useless, so he shook his head.

"No, just your fingerprints. We can trace where the knife was bought, but..."

"But?"

"Are you really telling me the truth? He's just another thirteen-year-old kid like you, look at his appearance, he seems much weaker than you. How can he be so calm and calculating in committing such a perfect crime? He has no criminal record, his family is decent, and his grades are among the best in other schools."

Nick was speechless. However, he couldn't blame the detective either. He didn't think of Jonathan that way until yesterday's incident either.

"Instead of telling us what to do, why don't you tell me all the details of what happened? Our policy is to see everyone as innocent until proven otherwise. Even if it really happened, that doesn't mean the court will accept that he did it without having the evidence."

"I know, the court and the law suck, but it's necessary to prevent lies from being accepted as fact. After all, we must come to an agreement. Rather than risking lies being accepted as truth, the law is careful and treats every truth and lie only until it's approved or disapproved."

"That's complicated, Detective Anderson." Nick didn't understand the old detective's wise words.

Old detective Anderson sighed, "Tell me what happened?"

"From the beginning?"

"From the beginning. No lies, please. If you get caught lying, even if you're the victim, you won't escape the law."

"Oh... Alright..." Nick first listed what happened, honestly, which made the old detective raise an eyebrow.

"So... Is the outcome of how you ended up your fault?"

"Yes, I guess?"

"Don't worry. Regardless of the motive, a crime is a crime. Since you're so honest about it, I'll help lessen your punishment for attempted extortion, harassment, attempted murder, and abuse."

"Thanks?"

"Sure, so what happened next?" Old detective Anderson made sure to record this conversation from the beginning.

"Well... I tried to punch him as a warning." Nick's face turned serious as he remembered that surreal moment. "When I thought I was about to hit his body, he agilely dodged it and hit me in the neck. I didn't feel weakness in that blow, his strength and speed were superhuman, I even felt him lift me off the ground with that first blow. After his first blow. He kicked me in the side, that damn blow broke three ribs."

As he told the story, Nick showed the bruises to prove his story.

"When I fell to the ground, he pulled a knife from his bag and cut me several times. I knew he would kill me, his eyes showed no emotion and I could only see that infernal playful smile. He never hesitated, I defended myself, but in just seconds, more cuts appeared." Nick didn't need to prove how many times he was cut since everything was written in his medical report.

When he got to that part, Nick suddenly remembered: "And when he was about to stab me in the chest, a girl suddenly came out of the corner..."

"Girl...?" The old detective was intrigued. "Witness, victim, or accomplice?"

"She's the least popular girl in school. Her name is Yina, she has no friends. I don't know why she was there, but when she appeared, Jonathan stopped. For a moment, at least." Nick frowned as he rubbed his left arm. "After that moment, he stabbed me, but I defended myself with my arm."

"After that?"

"After that, I lost vision and when I opened my eyes, I was in front of Yina... At that moment, even though my whole body hurt, I immediately tried to escape. I looked back and saw Yina also running away as fast as she could. That was it, luckily Jonathan didn't follow me."

"So here we are..."

"Yeah, that's it." Nick quickly nodded with a horror described on his face.

"Alright..." Anderson stood up and stopped the recording, "That was very helpful."

"What will you do now?"

"Hmm... We'll give the suspect a psychological test. Either he has a mental disorder or he has much more experience than we think. The former is more likely, so we'll start with that. Also, we'll get in touch with Yina."

"Thank you, Detective..." Nick sighed in relief, as the detective seemed reliable.

However, as soon as that sigh escaped his mouth, not everything could go as he expected.

A nurse entered with bad news.

"Sir Nick Manawa, you have a visitor. He says he's your brother, George Manawa."
