Chương 54: Illusion

[ Kai's POV ]

Stars...

It was the second night that I had spent walking through the forest, following the faint glow of stars.

The two lines I had mentally drawn in my head were the guides, leading me forward and keeping me on track.

This wouldn't have been that bad if not for the clouds in the sky that sometimes obscured the stars.

"..."

I could only stop and wait until the clouds drifted away, revealing the twinkling constellations once again.

Even though I wanted to continue walking forward without any visual information, the pauses were a must because if I were to accidentally veer off the course too much, there was a small chance I'd lose my calculations and trajectory, which would cost me more time than simply waiting.

The night air was cool and crisp, a gentle breeze rustling the leaves as I ventured deeper into the woods.

It was honestly one of the most relaxing experiences I had felt upon coming to this world.

"Eva should be on her way to the Aethereum Academy..."

Pressing my lips together I recalled the main character of this world, Eva, a human, who if not stopped, will wipe out all the Demons in the world.

Her trip to the Academy wasn't supposed to be a fun one.

During this journey, for an entire week, she would be harassed by various monsters, which in return didn't give her any time to sleep.

She had a couple of mental breakdowns, even starting to talk to herself, crying and even trying to kill herself in the end.

Luckily or not, before she could, a Demon appeared in her path and her rage and frustration shifted toward it.

Although the Demon was a Fiend Rank one, she was able to defeat it, her ferocity fueled by anger and madness.

"That's not good..."

Recalling how the fight with the Fiend Rank one Demon had unfolded, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease.

During the battle, she was pushed to the bring, especially since the Demon had a trait that was basically the most dangerous against Eva.

[ Illusion ]

The trait 'Illusion' allowed the Demon to manipulate Eva's senses and create illusions that seemed real, making it difficult for her to distinguish between what was reality and what was not.

Another property this trait had was that it would create the most painful experiences for Eva, playing on her fears and insecurities, intensifying the mental strain she was already under.

I still remember the sense of dread I felt while flipping through the starting pages of the novel.

Barely 15 chapters into the story, the main character was already subjected to the worst possible pain and suffering...

Reliving her trauma, her family's death, the night when everything that was dear was taken away from her.

I couldn't quite comprehend how it would feel, but the Author managed to at least partially convey the overwhelming emotions and psychological toll that Eva endured.

She wanted to rip the Demon into pieces.

Peel off its skin.

Pluck out its eyes.

Cut off its limbs.

All of the possible violent and gruesome ways to inflict pain and suffering on the Demon raced through her mind.

At one point she wanted to kill herself again, but the overwhelming desire to exact revenge on the Demons became her sole focus.

I could've prevented this from happening, however, I didn't.

Why?

Well, because it was character development.

This event that seems to be only harming Eva was actually quite necessary for her growth as a character.

While in the Academy, Eva would not only train or study various subjects but experience many events and while most of them were good and beneficial for her, there were also some bad ones.

Specifically one where a Demon managed to infiltrate into the Academy undetected, using its trait [ Manipulation ] to control students and create a massacre.

Eva was able to resist this Manipulation due to the mental strain she experienced from this battle and her encounter with a similar ability.

Anyways, I couldn't help her even if I wanted to.

If I were to offer her a helping hand now, this would surely impact her future growth, which I didn't want to interfere with.

I need her to grow strong to kill all of the Demons...

Or at least the Demon God, he's the reason why we are so malicious anyways.

Unfortunately, this is not known until the end of the Novel.

'We truly are an unfortunate race...'
