Chapter 62
Jack's POV
As I ended the call with Eugene, my hands were shaking, though I did my best to hide it. His voice, cold and taunting, echoed in my head, and I could feel my pulse hammering against my temples.
I couldn't however shake off the feeling that something wasn't right. From the way Eugene had spoken on the phone, I could feel that he wasn't actually the mastermind, and that there was someone else actually calling the shots.
Luciana's life hung in the balance, and there wasn't a damn thing I could do about it from here. It was a setup. I knew it the second Eugene laid out the terms. He didn't need to say it outright—this was about leverage. It wasn't about getting back at Luciana or anything, but about me. "But why?" I couldn't help but wonder.
In my mind, I was already having the feeling that something quite crazy was out play and Luciana was just being used as a collateral, while I was the pawn. This was a clever game for real.
