Revealing the truth
"What? Shane opened the gates and killed every walker inside?", Damian asked in disbelief as Shawn told him what happened in the farm after he left.
"Yes. He shot mom, Beth's boyfriend and our neighbors. I knew that they were already gone but dad didn't believe that", Shawn said as his tone became more subtle and sad. "I broke him you know. Seeing them shoot everyone without a single thought like that. Beth fell into shock and just woke up last night", he added.
Damian waited a bit and imagined how Hershel must've felt. He then spoke, "I know how it feels when someone you love dies in front of you. But maybe it was for the better. The way it went wasn't good, but Hershel needed to know that there is no coming back from them".
Shawn who agreed to him said, "Maybe...". "But you asking me that among everyone wasn't cool, bro. I told you to keep that a secret", he accusingly said with a fake scorn.
"I am so sorry about that. It just slipped out o'my tongue", Damain said with a light laugh before keeping quiet as the topic was serious. "Beth. Is she okay?", Damian asked.
"Nah! She was almost bitten by mom, you know. Among everyone in our family, she has the kindest heart. Seeing her mother and boyfriend be shot like that must have given her trauma". Shawn said as he continued. "Man, I like Rick and others but for some reason, I can't come to like Shane. Dad almost threw all of them out yesterday, but Rick asked him out of it".
"He must have also gone through a lot. Everyone reacts differently to different situations. You don't have to like him. He just needs time to adapt, I think. Wait a sec, did you say all? Would he also throw me out?", Damian said.
"Don't worry. You are friend. Although he didn't talk to you directly, but he told me that he was grateful to you for protecting me that day from those walkers. He realized yesterday that he could've lost me that day as well if you didn't kill them before removing the tractor", Shawn said seriously while looking far away. "That's why, you are welcome here, anytime", he said turning towards Damian with a smile.
Damian just smiled back and said nothing as they both looked far away through the window of the room Shawn lived in. Suddenly the door was knocked and Kayla stood at the gate and said, "Oh! you had company. I didn't know. I'll come later", she said awkwardly looking at Damian.
Damian looked at Shawn suspiciously, "She helps with my leg, sometimes. It still hurts occasionally", Shawn replied in strange tone.
'liar', Damian thought as a smirk creeped down his face. "I was just about to leave anyway. I need to talk to Rick about something", Damian said as he stood up and started walking towards the door. "Hey! If you need any help, I can stay", Damian offered.
"N-No. No need. It's just a regular checkup kind of thing. Don't mind it. I'll see you at dinner?", Shawn spoke but Damian had already left. "He was toying, right?", he asked Kayla who felt a little nervous when Damian looked at her strangely when leaving as he closed the door from outside.
Walking down, he saw Beth sleeping on a bed in a room whose door was a little open. "Hey", he said as he slightly opened the gate and saw Maggie sitting in the chair opposite to the bed.
"You need anything?", Maggie asked.
"Oh! Nothing. Just... the door was open, and I saw her. So, I came to ask if she's feeling okay", Damian replied.
"She is alright", Maggie said as she continued to stare at Damian.
Feeling strange, Damian walked away without entering the room before quickly taking a look at Beth. When he reached downstairs, he saw Amy walking in and suddenly the two pair of eyes met each other. No one said anything for a while.
"Hello", Damian said with a fake smile. "How are you doing?", he asked.
"Good", she replied as Damian walked towards the door again. He was about to push the door when Amy suddenly called him. "Damian?".
Damian turned back and looked at her. "Yes?", he asked.
"Can we talk for a moment?", she asked.
"Yes. Yeah... why not? Let's talk", he said.
"Are you mad at me or something?", she asked.
"What? No. Why would I?", Damian said.
"Then why have you been running away whenever you see me? If I did something wrong then tell me", she said.
"No. It's nothing like that. I'm not running away. It's just... I kept thinking about Sophia at the time and thought I needed to isolate myself to work", Damian clarified hiding the real reason.
"Everyone was worried and thinking about her too. Poor girl. She's still out there", Amy said.
"Yeah. I just hope she is safe. I see Daryl's the only one who haven't given up", Damian said, as he had given up on finding Sophia after hearing that they did an extensive search for 2 days but still didn't find any clue to find her. After so many days, even her trail must have gone cold. If she was not in the forest, then according to Damian, maybe someone had found Sophia and took her away with him. That would mean, she could be anywhere. But Damian didn't say it out loud as it would make Carol more vulnerable. It was time to close the chapter till they, by some god's luck, find Sophia again someday.
"So, what happened with you when you were gone? Tell me everything. I wanna hear about it", Amy said with a smile as the misunderstanding had been cleared between them.
...
"So, they left you there alone and ran away?", she asked angrily.
"Yeah. But it had been hours. They must have thought I was dead inside", Damian clarified.
"And you thought they were your friends", Amy said scornfully.
"Not friends. I just pretended to think that they were my friends. I never expected them to come help me. I knew they weren't good people since the beginning", Damian said.
"Well, if it were us, we'd have not let you go alone in there in the first place. I bet Rick would go there even before you", she said laughing.
"Yes. I thought so too. And that's why you guys are my people. Not them", Damian said.
"Oh, by that incident, I need to speak to everyone about something". Damian said.
"Right now?", Amy asked.
"Yes. It's time for lunch. They'll come here anyway", he said as they sat there waiting for everyone else. Soon, everyone was there and finished eating when Damian gathered their attention towards himself.
"Guys. I need to tell you something", Damian said seriously.
"Don't tell me you were bit", T-Dog said trying to joke while everyone looked at him. "What? Can't even joke now?", he said.
"That... I want to tell you guys a few things about walkers which I confirmed on my own. Just listen and don't disturb me in between. I'll forget where I was", Damian said as everyone looked at his direction seriously.
"First thing, Yesterday, I encountered a walker that, unlike normal walkers, was faster. Might as well call them runners. Fortunately, it didn't have eyes and I managed to kill it before it could attack. And I am not sure, but my guess is that it is stronger than normal walkers as well. Stronger than a normal person, I mean".
"Tell me you are joking right?", T-Dog who was still in his playful mood asked but when Damian didn't reply back, not only him but others also got tensed.
"Tell us more about what happened", Shane said.
"Well, as I told you earlier, I was running with the others towards exit when I remembered that there were two women held captive in a room. I left the group as they ran out and went back in to find them. Walkers were behind me, but I got inside and locked the door. One of them had hanged herself. And other suddenly came at me from the side to bite me. Yes, both had turned into walkers. I shot her and thought she had died. But when I looked back, she was there standing and faster than before. I don't know what happened, but she was fast unlike other walkers".
"Wait a minute. You said the school was safe. Then how did the walker get inside?", Glenn asked as others also raised their faces to hear the answer.
"They didn't enter. It was the people we killed. They became walkers", Damian said.
"What do you mean?", Rick asked.
"We all forgot to notice something as this didn't happen to anyone", Damian continued. "Walkers are all dead", he said.
"Tell us something new", Andrea scoffed.
"No. You don't understand. People who had died... are the walkers", Damian spoke again. "They are not infected people. They are dead people. It's like the dead are being controlled by something", he added.
"I don't believe it", Hershel said.
"You have to sir. I didn't believe it at first but I have seen this many times now. When I was taken by the military, the group members who got killed rose up as walkers even when they were not bitten". The atmosphere suddenly got tense. "The people that died in that school were not bit. But few minutes after their death, they rose back up as walkers".
"Dr. Jenner gave me a tape containing all his research and observations. He said something which I thought might not be true. But it is true", Damian said.
"What did it say?", Daryl asked.
"That... everyone-", Damian was interrupted by Rick who completed it.
"Everyone is infected", Rick said.
"What?", most of the people stood up from their seats.
"Rick, what are you saying?", Lori asked her husband.
"At the CDC, Jenner told me. Whatever it is, we all carry it.", Rick said.
"And you didn't tell us?", Shane asked in an accusing tone. "Man. You knew it this whole time?", he asked with a scorned smile.
"How could I have known for sure? You saw how crazy that...", Rick said.
"That is not your call. Okay, when I found out about the walkers in the barn, I told for the good of everyone", Glenn also rose his voice in objection to Rick keeping it a secret although Damian also knew since before but never got the chance to tell others about it.
"I thought it best that people didn't know when I didn't believe it myself", Rick clarified as he looked at Damian.
"So... What I wanted to say is that the walkers are not infected. We are. And, however we die, if the brain is not destroyed, everyone becomes them. No exceptions", Damian said while added, 'except me', in his mind.
Hershel who was trying to get up with the support of the hand of his chair fell down on the chair again as Maggie who was standing beside him helped him. He was the oldest in the group along with Dale. While Dale seemed okay with it, Hershel was quite shaken.
"All that time, my wife was dead, and I had been feeding something else? And now when I die, I would become like them?", Hershel said as tears began falling down his eyes.
"Dad. Please", Maggie asked Hershel to recoup himself.
"Sir, not only you. But everyone. That may be the reason how the world turned upside down like this. No one would have known about it. And before they could figure this out, they got taken down by those walkers", Damian said. Everyone agreed to his reason.
"He's right about that. If the army had known about it, they would have not gone down", Shawn said.
"Did Jenner tell anything else?", Andrea asked Damian.
"He said that bite only kills people. It's not what turns them", Damian said.
"Yeah. Makes sense now", Glenn said without changing his expression.
'Was that a sarcasm?', Damian thought as he finished telling everything he wanted to tell.
