Chương 38: Step Away And Carried The Plan

Lark sat alone in his dimly lit office, the once vibrant energy of the Alchemist Association now reduced to a hushed and desolate silence.

The grand shelves, once overflowing with potions and bustling with customers, were now eerily bare. The demonstration he had orchestrated to discredit Nikos had backfired spectacularly, and the reputation of the Alchemist Association had plummeted as a result.

He clenched his fists, his eyes staring blankly at the empty space in front of him, frustration etched deeply into his faces.

His mind raced with thoughts of desperation and fear. The customers had flocked to Nikos's shop, enticed by the promise of higher quality and safer potions. The streets buzzed with tales of Nikos's bravery and the trustworthiness of his wares, while the once mighty Alchemist Association had become a shadow of its former self.

Lark ran a hand through his hair, his fingers trembling with a mix of anger and anxiety. The pressure of his predicament weighed heavily on him.

His uncle, a powerful figure in the Alchemist Association, had entrusted him with the task of maintaining their dominance in Oakheart. Failure was not an option. If his uncle discovered the extent of the disaster, the consequences would be severe.

He could already imagine his uncle's fury, the reprimands, and the inevitable demotion or worse.

"Damn it," Lark muttered, slamming his fist on the desk. The sound echoed through the empty office, a hollow thud that did nothing to alleviate his frustration.

His mind raced, desperate for a solution, for anything that could salvage the situation. He couldn't afford to lose this battle, not when so much was at stake.

A knock on the office door jolted him from his thoughts. He straightened up, trying to compose himself. "Come in," he called out, his voice barely masking his irritation.

A young staff member entered, carrying a piece of parchment. He looked nervous, sensing the tension in the room. "Boss, I heard some news that's been spreading in the streets."

Lark's eyes narrowed. "What is it? Spit it out."

The staff member cleared his throat and began to read from the parchment. "There are rumors circulating that a far neighboring town will be sending aid to Oakheart to help against the new monster wave."

For a moment, Lark simply stared, his mind processing the information. Then, a glimmer of hope flickered in his eyes. "Aid from a neighboring town, you say?" He leaned back in his chair, a plan beginning to form in his mind. "This could be the opportunity we need."

The staff member nodded, though he seemed uncertain about Lark's sudden shift in mood. "Yes, boss. People are already talking about it in the streets."

Lark's lips curled into a smile, a sight that was rare these days. "Good. Keep me updated on any developments. This might be the break we've been looking for."

The staff member bowed slightly and left the room, leaving Lark alone with his thoughts once more. He tapped his fingers on the desk, contemplating the implications of this new information.

If the neighboring town did indeed send aid, it could create a window for me to regain the trust of Oakheart's citizens. He could use this to turn the tide against Nikos, to reclaim the association's standing and perhaps even exceed it.

"Yes," Lark murmured to himself, his confidence slowly returning. "This could work."

He imagined the scene: the arrival of aid, the grateful townsfolk, the renewed trust in the Alchemist Association. He would position himself as the orchestrator of the aid, the one who facilitated the rescue of Oakheart. The narrative would be simple and effective. It would overshadow the previous debacle, burying Nikos's success under a wave of newfound goodwill towards the association.

But for this to work, he needed to act quickly and decisively. He couldn't afford any more mistakes. His uncle's wrath loomed over him like a dark cloud, pushing him to the edge. This plan had to succeed.

Lark stood, his resolve hardening. He walked over to the window, looking out at the quiet streets of Oakheart. The town seemed peaceful now, but he knew the threat of the next monster wave was real and imminent. He had to leverage this situation to his advantage.

He turned away from the window, already formulating his next steps. He would need to contact key figures in the neighboring town, ensure the aid was on its way, and prepare a narrative that highlighted the association's role in securing that aid. It was a delicate maneuver, but he was confident he could pull it off.

"Prepare yourself, Nikos," Lark whispered, a steely determination in his voice. "This battle isn't over yet."

Outside the safewall of the town. Reychard and his newly formed team ventured out of Oakheart, the air heavy with the anticipation of their mission.

The task before them was daunting: to investigate the mysterious control behind the monster wave attacks that had been plaguing their town.

Nikos, having agreed to join the investigation, walked alongside Reychard, Chloe, Thalion, Orion, and others adventurers, but his mind was on something else he already working on the next steps of his plan.

The group moved in silence, their senses attuned to the forest around them. After several hours of trekking, Reychard called for a break. The team welcomed the break, settling down in a small clearing surrounded by towering trees. Nikos approached Reychard, who was scanning the surroundings.

"Reychard, I need to step away for a moment. Nature calls," Nikos said with a polite smile.

Reychard nodded, his trust in Nikos evident. "Alright, but don't stray too far. We need to stay alert."

Nikos nodded and walked into the forest, his steps purposeful. Once he was out of sight, he quickened his pace, moving deeper into the woods until he reached a secluded spot where eight figures awaited him.

Lukas's men, clad in dark, inconspicuous clothing, stood in a semi-circle, their expressions stern and ready for instruction.

Nikos greeted them with a nod and began to pull several bundles from his magic inventory bag.

The bundles contained sets of knight and army armor, each piece meticulously crafted to resemble the uniforms of the neighboring town's military.

"Here are the uniforms," Nikos said, distributing the armor among the men. "Put these on. Your mission is to infiltrate Oakheart, posing as the army from the neighboring town. Once inside, head straight to the Alchemist Association and purchase as many potions as you can. Make sure to create the illusion of urgency and desperation."

The men quickly donned the armor, their transformation into a convincing military unit nearly complete. One of Lukas's men, a burly figure with a scar running down his cheek, stepped forward. "And the reason for this? What are we to tell anyone who asks?"

Nikos's eyes gleamed with a devious light. "You are to say that your lord is in on the journey to get to the town, and the army is currently resting and set up a camp there in still quite long position. And you and the group been order by the Lord Faye to buy as many stock potions from Alchemist Association to helping Lord Faye armies steady movement."

The men nodded, their expressions resolute. They understood the plan and the importance of their roles within it.

Nikos continued, his tone authoritative. "Move quickly and efficiently. Once you've acquired the potions, pretend that you going leave the town, instead just goes to back Lukas mansion. I'll be waiting there with your master."

Nikos continue to gave some more instruction until everything was clear to them.

The men finished wearing their disguises, each one now looking like a member of a well-disciplined military unit. Satisfied with their appearance, Nikos gave them a final nod. "Go. Make sure no one suspects a thing."

With that, Lukas's men turned and made their way back towards Oakheart, their mission clear.

Nikos watched them go, a smile of satisfaction playing on his lips. He turned and began to make his way back to the clearing where the rest of the investigation team was waiting.

As Nikos rejoined the group, Reychard glanced up from a map he was studying. "All good?"

"Yes," Nikos replied smoothly, taking a seat beside the team. "Let's continue."

The group resumed their journey, unaware of the intricate plot Nikos had set into motion. As they moved deeper into the forest, the atmosphere grew tense with anticipation.

Meanwhile Nikos's mind was already several steps ahead, orchestrating events that would unfold back in Oakheart on his target. The Alchemist Associations.

Chương 39: A Group Of Knights

Reychard's investigation team moved with cautious determination through the dense forest, each member on high alert.

The signs they had discovered along the way—disturbed earth, claw marks on trees, and traces of dark magic—had all strengthened their suspicion that the monster waves were being controlled by something or someone.

The air was thick with tension as they pressed on, their resolve unshaken despite the ominous feeling that hung over them.

Nikos walked at the rear of the group, his mind calculating the next steps. He had played his part well, helping to uncover clues while ensuring his true motives remained hidden.

As they ventured deeper into the forest, the trees grew denser, and the underbrush thicker, until they stumbled upon a peculiar sight: a cave entrance, nearly imperceptible amidst the foliage.

It was Thalion, the keen-eyed ranger, who first noticed the subtle shimmer in the air around the cave. He held up a hand, signaling the group to stop. "There's something strange about this place," he said, his voice is low. "Look at the air around the entrance. It's like a veil of magic."

Reychard stepped forward, his eyes narrowing as he examined the entrance. "Good catch, Thalion. This is no ordinary cave. Chloe, can you dispel whatever enchantment is guarding it?"

Chloe, the mage of the group, nodded, moved closer, her hands already weaving intricate patterns in the air. "Give me a moment," she murmured, her focus entirely on the task at hand. The air around her crackled with energy as she muttered incantations, the shimmer slowly dissipating until the cave entrance was fully visible.

"There," Chloe said, a note of triumph in her voice. "The barrier is down."

Reychard nodded in approval. "Good work, Chloe. Let's proceed, but stay alert. We don't know what's inside."

Nikos stepped forward, placing a hand on Reychard's shoulder. "Reychard, perhaps we should reconsider. If this cave was protected by such powerful magic, whatever lies within could be extremely dangerous. We might need more support to handle it."

Reychard pondered Nikos's words, his brow furrowing in thought. "You have a point, Nikos. We've gathered a lot of information already. We know there's something—or someone—controlling the monsters, and this cave seems to be a significant clue."

Thalion, ever the practical one, chimed in. "We should report back to the guild master with what we've found. It would be reckless to charge in without a better understanding of what we're dealing with."

Chloe nodded in agreement, her earlier confidence tempered by caution. "I agree. We've come this far, but there's no need to risk our lives unnecessarily. We can regroup and come back better prepared."

Orion, the quiet half-orc healer, added, "It's wise to err on the side of caution. We've seen enough to know this is serious."

Reychard sighed, clearly torn between his desire to uncover the truth and the responsibility he felt for the safety of his team. After a moment, he made his decision.

"Alright, we'll head back. We've gathered enough evidence to present to the guild master. But let's mark this location so we can return if needed."

The team agreed, marking the location of the cave with subtle signs that only they would recognize. As they began their journey back to Oakheart, the tension in the group eased slightly, replaced by a sense of accomplishment. They had uncovered significant clues that could lead to the heart of the mystery.

Back on the Oakheart town that bustled with the usual mid-morning activity, the townsfolk going about their daily routines with a sense of purpose.

However, this day brought an unexpected sight: a group of knights and soldiers, clad in gleaming armor, marching through the town. Their presence immediately drew attention, and the Oakheart town army, ever vigilant, moved to greet them.

Captain of the Oakheart town army stepped forward, offering a welcoming smile. "Welcome to Oakheart, noble knights. How can we assist you today? We have provisions and accommodations ready for you."

The leader of the knights, a stern-faced man with a commanding presence, shook his head. "We appreciate the hospitality, but we have urgent business to attend to. We need to visit the Alchemist Association shop immediately."

The Oakheart's captain nodded, slightly taken aback by their brusqueness but understanding the urgency in their tone. "Of course, I'll have someone guide you there right away."

As the knights made their way through the town, the news of their arrival spread like wildfire. The staff at the Alchemist Association shop buzzed with excitement and nervous energy.

One of the younger staff members, a boy named Finn, sprinted to the back office where Lark was brooding over his latest set of ledgers.

"Boss! Boss! You won't believe this!" Finn panted, barely able to contain his excitement. "A group of knights from the neighboring town is here! They're coming to our shop!"

Lark's eyes widened with surprise. "What? Why would knights from the neighboring town come here? Right, I almost forgot, they going to help the town fighting against the monster waves attack." He rose from his chair, his mind already racing with the implications. "Prepare the shop, make sure everything is in order."

Moments later, the knights entered the shop, their presence filling the room with an air of authority. The leader of the group stepped forward, his gaze sweeping over the array of potions and alchemical supplies.

"I am Sir Roland, commander of these knights," he announced. "Our Lord Faye has sent us ahead of the main army. We require a large quantity of potions to support our forces. We've heard that Alchemist Association shop is the best place to acquire them."

Lark, though is slightly suspicious, but masked his unease with a courteous smile. "Welcome, Sir Roland. It's an honor to serve Lord Faye's men. How many potions do you require?"

Roland's response was immediate and firm. "We need as many as you can provide. Our forces are still a distance away, and we must be well-stocked when they arrive."

Lark nodded, though a niggling doubt crept into his mind. "Of course, we can accommodate large orders. However, might I inquire about the payment arrangements?"

Roland's expression didn't waver. "Lord Faye will handle the payment personally upon his arrival in Oakheart. He has authorized me to ensure that we gather the supplies needed without delay. If you cannot meet our needs and wasting our times, we could be forced to seek out other suppliers. I hear there is other potions shop in this town."

The mention of other suppliers made Lark's heart skip a beat.

He couldn't afford to lose such a lucrative sale, especially not to a Nikos. "No need for that, Sir Roland. We can fulfill your order. It will take a few moments to gather everything."

Lark turned to his staff, barking orders to gather the stock. Potions of every kind were brought out, carefully packed, and handed over to the knights.

As the shop's shelves emptied, Lark felt a mix of anxiety and triumph. This was a significant sale, one that would keep the shop's finances afloat and prove his worth to his uncle.

Once the potions were loaded, Roland approached Lark, placing a firm hand on his shoulder. "You have done well, Mr. Lark. Lord Faye will be pleased with your cooperation. Rest assured, when my lord arrive in this town, you will be rewarded handsomely."

Lark's chest swelled with pride, the earlier doubts fading. "Thank you, Sir Roland. I look forward to serving Lord Faye again in the future."

With that, the knights departed, leaving the Alchemist Association shop significantly emptier. Lark watched them go, he smiled proudly as he watched the knights carry off 80% of the store's stock, feeling a surge of triumph.

Finally, I have outmaneuvered that bastard Nikos, he thought. This sale will secure my position and prove my worth. My uncle will see that I can handle any challenge, and the Alchemist Association's reputation will recover. That bastard Nikos won't be able to compete with a deal like this. Victory is mine.

Lark let a loud laugh.
