45% Antagonist's Dilemma: Unbidden Netori / Chapter 9: Bento

Chương 9: Bento

Back in India, in my previous life, students didn't have individual tables and chairs like Japanese students do. Instead, three or four students would share a long table and bench. During lunch breaks, some couples would sit together, side by side, savoring their fleeting moments of joy. However, that's not possible here, as each chair is designed to accommodate only one person.

But who could have anticipated her countermeasure—sitting directly across from me, facing me, and observing my every move with unwavering attention.

Even though I said I would investigate the cause of her unexpected progress, I honestly have no idea where to start. Maybe I should put the mission on hold for now.

"If you have other things to attend to, I can return the box after I'm done, or perhaps wash it at home and give it back to you tomorrow." I paused and looked at her.

"Hmmm," she said, snapping out of her thoughts. "Oh, me? I'm completely free, and I'd love to hear your feedback in person," she added, leaning back in her chair, hands resting on the sides, gently swaying.

"Then I'm afraid I might disappoint you, as I'm not adept at expressing myself, and I don't think I can contribute much with everyone's attention on me," I replied while unpacking the bento.

The bento was a work of art, filled with vibrant colors and carefully arranged sections. In one corner, fluffy rice formed the base, adorned with heart-shaped vegetables and slices of tamagoyaki, layered like a delicate mosaic. A miniature panda-shaped onigiri nestled beside a cluster of cherry tomatoes, each one gleaming like a ruby. The main compartment held tender teriyaki chicken, garnished with sesame seeds, and nestled next to a bed of fresh, crisp lettuce leaves.

"Oh, no need to feel bad. I just want your honest feedback. Besides, I'm quite confident in my cooking skills. And as for the issue of being watched, maybe we can find a more private place next time," she replied, still swaying slightly in her chair, her cheeks turning red with nervousness, which added to her cute demeanor.

Persistent bitch, who said I felt bad? The attention I get on my own is already overwhelming, and now you're adding to my burden. And don't just assume there will be a next time.

If you think you can get away with anything because you're cute and I won't object for fear of being seen as a jerk, you're sorely mistaken.

I'll give the most honest review—no sugar coating, just straight facts. Let's see how you handle that.

Sitting in the bustling classroom, I picked up the chopsticks and carefully tasted the teriyaki chicken, savoring its savory glaze. The tamagoyaki came next, its sweet layers offering a delightful contrast. With each bite of fluffy white rice, I appreciated the flavors, all the while being determined not to show any reaction to the bento. Despite the delicious taste and the effort clearly put into it, I kept my expression neutral, focusing on the food as if it were just another meal, though each bite reminded me of the care and thoughtfulness behind it.

Gradually but surely, I savored every bit of the bento's contents.

I carefully set down my chopsticks and glanced at the bento, appreciating the effort put into it. "Thanks," I said casually, trying to keep my tone nonchalant. "The teriyaki chicken is well-seasoned, and the tamagoyaki is nicely made." Pausing for a moment, I added, "I can tell you put thought into this."

Upon hearing my feedback on her bento, she responded with a surprised, "Really?" Her face lit up visibly, and her cheeks tinged with a blush. "You truly think so?" she asked, leaning closer across the table, her attire hinting at a revealing neckline.

"I have no reason to lie," I said casually. If there weren't so many people listening in, I'd have gone into more detail about the dish.

She sighed in relief. "Thank God. I was nervous you wouldn't like it," she said, once again leaning back in her chair. Her head tilted back, showcasing her elegant jawline. Her hands hung relaxed at her sides, and the gentle motion caused her ample bosom to sway slightly.

Afterward, she asked me a few questions, like my full name, age, and if I had any siblings, to which I responded briefly and formally, maintaining a calm demeanor without showing enthusiasm or annoyance.

A few moments later, the bell signaling the end of the lunch break rang, prompting a sorrowful expression to cross her face. She hesitated, then slowly rose, clutching her bento box, and made her way toward the classroom entrance. Glancing back intermittently, she seemed to hope I might ask her to stay.

Just as she neared the entrance, she paused, pivoting back towards me. After a moment of contemplation evident on her face, she decisively altered her course and strode up to my desk, halting directly in front of it with a resolute expression.

"Eric-kun," she exclaimed, her voice carrying a surprising intensity. The onlookers, who had been watching us as if we were part of some cinematic drama, all turned their attention to her, waiting expectantly for her to continue her sentence, myself included.

"Do you... do you have a girlfriend?" she asked, her voice trembling with nerves. Her face flushed a deep red, and her fingers nervously gripped the fabric of her skirt.

I had somewhat anticipated this situation, but seriously, why here, of all places? Is she trying to ward off other girls from approaching me, or is she just completely oblivious to her surroundings?

The room fell into pin-drop silence, as if a question that had lingered on everyone's mind but no one had dared to ask had finally been voiced. All eyes turned towards me.

Still appearing unfazed by the situation but internally panicking, I straightened my posture and placed my hand on the table, adopting a stance as if I were about to interview her.

"Yes, I do have a girlfriend,"
