Chương 89: Shine Bright, Sheng Xiangsi

Sheng Xiangsi was surprised by the place.

She had never been here before, but she had heard of it.

Lightning Dance Company, a top modern dance troupe in Jiangcheng, had a certain status and reputation even internationally.

The troupe had performed in Philadelphia.

Unfortunately, the ticket prices were too high and tickets were hard to come by, so Sheng Xiangsi hadn't had the chance to see their performance.

"This…"

Sheng Xiangsi got out of the car and stood at the entrance, looking at Fu Hanjiang in bewilderment. Why had he brought her here?

Fu Hanjiang locked the car and nodded for her to follow.

"Come along."

"…Oh."

After a second's hesitation, Sheng Xiangsi followed.

She didn't know why he had brought her here, but this was the Lightning Dance Company!

Before returning to Jiangcheng, she had looked into it and had wanted to apply for a job here.

Unfortunately, she had found out that the troupe's director had said they didn't hire openly; all dancers had to be personally chosen by her.

There were even rumors that the troupe had its own training classes for young dancers and didn't need to hire from outside.

So, Sheng Xiangsi had given up on the idea...

Now, she followed Fu Hanjiang and ended up backstage.

There was no performance tonight.

However, the backstage area was still bustling.

Several practice rooms were filled with people, either rehearsing or practicing, making Sheng Xiangsi a bit envious.

Suddenly, her hand was gripped tightly.

"What are you looking at?"

Fu Hanjiang pulled her closer. "Walk properly, and stop looking around."

He stopped at a door and let go of her hand, straightening her clothes. "When you see Teacher Gu, don't be nervous. Just answer her questions honestly."

"??"

Sheng Xiangsi trembled and blurted out, "Who did you say?"

"Teacher Gu." Fu Hanjiang chuckled, "Gu Shaohua... haven't you heard of her, being a modern dancer?"

"Heard of her… of course." Sheng Xiangsi nodded repeatedly.

Heard of her? She was a legend!

"That's right then."

Fu Hanjiang raised his hand and knocked on the door.

"Come in."

A clear voice came from inside.

Fu Hanjiang pushed the door open and reminded Sheng Xiangsi, "Stay calm. Make a good first impression on Teacher Gu."

"Okay."

Sheng Xiangsi nodded, her soul almost leaving her body.

It was a small suite.

On the sofa sat a woman who looked to be in her late thirties. Though there were fine lines at the corners of her eyes, her skin was tight, her figure well-proportioned, and her demeanor was elegant.

Sheng Xiangsi's heart raced. This... was Gu Shaohua, Teacher Gu!

She had never seen her in person, but there were photos of her online!

Who could understand the excitement of a modern dance student meeting a master?

"Teacher Gu."

Fu Hanjiang took a step forward and bowed slightly. "We're quite on time, aren't we?"

"Mm."

Gu Shaohua glanced at her watch; they were five minutes early.

She was a stickler for punctuality.

Even if it was an introduction from a friend, even if it was Fu Er Ye himself, if he had dared to be late today, she wouldn't have given him face.

"Mr. Fu, please sit."

She gestured to the sofa opposite.

"Thank you, Teacher Gu."

Fu Hanjiang didn't sit immediately but turned to Sheng Xiangsi, motioning for her to come forward. "Xiangsi, come here and greet Teacher Gu."

"Mm."

Sheng Xiangsi bit her lip and stepped forward, standing properly.

"Hello, Teacher Gu. I am Sheng Xiangsi."

Gu Shaohua finally looked up and carefully examined the girl from head to toe.

Sheng Xiangsi stood there without a hint of unease.

Hmm. Gu Shaohua's lips curved slightly, her expression hardly changing as she stared at Sheng Xiangsi's face.

"Wearing makeup?"

"Yes." Sheng Xiangsi nodded. She had put on makeup today for job hunting.

"Go, take it off."

Gu Shaohua pointed to the washroom. "There's makeup remover in there. Clean it off."

"Alright, Teacher Gu."

Fu Hanjiang sat on the sofa, leaving the matter between them. He wasn't a professional, so he didn't interfere.

After a while, Sheng Xiangsi came out, her face still a bit wet from removing the makeup.

"Teacher Gu, I've cleaned it off."

"Come here."

Gu Shaohua beckoned her over. "Sit."

She patted the seat next to her.

Sheng Xiangsi took a couple of steps forward and sat down as instructed.

Gu Shaohua raised her hand, asking, "May I touch your face?"

"Of course." Sheng Xiangsi had no objections.

"Good."

Gu Shaohua lifted her hand and brushed her fingers over Sheng Xiangsi's features with some pressure, as if she wasn't just feeling her face.

Fu Hanjiang frowned slightly as he watched.

Why was she touching her face? Tsk! Zhou Jinting hadn't mentioned this! Even he hadn't touched Xiangsi's face so carefully!

Fortunately, Gu Shaohua soon withdrew her hand.

Smiling, she seemed satisfied. "Very good, no plastic surgery."

"Yes." Sheng Xiangsi nodded with a smile. "This face is all from my mom."

"Remember," Gu Shaohua nodded, "if you want to dance with me, this face must never go under the knife! Keep it natural."

"Okay…"

Sheng Xiangsi nodded but then suddenly realized something, "Teacher Gu, what did you say?"

Did she hear wrong?

Did Teacher Gu just say she could dance with her? Did she mean what Sheng Xiangsi thought she meant?

"Oh, I spoke too soon."

Gu Shaohua stood up. "Come, let's go to the practice room. Let me see your skills."

"Alright, Teacher Gu."

Sheng Xiangsi took a deep breath.

She hadn't brought her dance outfit, so she danced in her own clothes, performing Martha Graham's "Frontier."

Even without changing clothes, it didn't affect her performance at all.

Gu Shaohua, with her arms crossed, watched with growing satisfaction and a vague sense of familiarity, as if she had seen her somewhere before.

When the dance ended, Sheng Xiangsi stopped and stood respectfully. "Teacher Gu, please give me your guidance."

Instead of answering, Gu Shaohua asked, "Did you use to dance with the RED Dance Company in Philadelphia?"

"?" Sheng Xiangsi was taken aback. She hadn't expected Teacher Gu to know. "Yes, how did you know?"

"So, it really is you."

Gu Shaohua smiled.

"When I was touring in Philadelphia, I met people from the RED Dance Company. I also know you dance very well, but unfortunately… Americans tend to discriminate against Chinese, so you were suppressed."

She had seen Sheng Xiangsi dance at RED, and she had danced much better than several of RED's lead dancers at the time.

But it was hard for a Chinese person to make a name in Philadelphia.

Sometimes, the better you were, the more you were suppressed.

Talking about this past, Sheng Xiangsi felt a bit aggrieved. "That's all in the past. I'm back now."

"Mm."

Gu Shaohua nodded approvingly. "It's good you're back. From now on, dance with me. Here, find your stage and shine! Shine bright, Sheng Xiangsi."
