Chương 9: A FATEFUL ENCOUNTER
The Alarm rang waking Tetsuo from his sleep. He yawned as he turned it off. It's already three o' clock , time for my morning jog, I have to go get ready said Tetsuo as he drinks some water, brush his teeth and puts on a jogging pants and a hoodie.
Um, if I remember correctly, I had a basketball and it should be right here, ah, found it. It's been a while since I used it so it's a bit worn out .While jogging yesterday morning I saw a basketball court not so far from here, it should be a good place to practice said Tetsuo to himself.
Before leaving,Tetsuo opens Usagi's room door to check up on her. She's still sound asleep, I'll write a note to her in case she wakes up said Tetsuo as he wrote the note and locked up the door to the apartment. Alright, I think I've stretched enough said Tetsuo as he started jogging.
I think that it's somewhere around here, I found it, huh? Someone else is here Tetsuo said to himself as he saw a girl bouncing a basketball. She then shoots a mid range shot but it hits the rim and it misses. The girl then placed her hands on her knees and breathes heavily as sweat dropped from her face.
The basketball she shot rolls over to Tetsuo's feet and he took it up. The girl looks at him curiously as he passes the basketball to her. Thank you she said. How long have you been out here? Asked Tetsuo. Well since one , I was very anxious and couldn't get any sleep, so I came out here said the girl. Oh, I see. So, what are you doing out here so early?
I just came out here to practice a little before it's time for school . so you play basketball then right? She asked. Well, you could say that . so you are able to shoot then? She asked. Yes, I guess so. Can you show me how to shoot, please . Alright, just watch me.
Tetsuo bounced the basketball a couple of times before he sets up and shoots a three pointer which hit nothing but net. Whoa, that was amazing, the flow of his power on the basketball was so authentic the girl said to herself.
Nice shot, that was an impressive display, so can you watch me and tell me what I'm doing wrong please. Okay, I guess, show me. The girl dribbles the basketball and took a deep breath before shooting a mid range shot which misses as it landed on the backboard. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong, the ball just won't go inside the rim she said in a frustrated tone.
You rely too much on your arm strength for power, try and rely more on your leg strength, when you took that shot your arm was straying to the right you need to correct that. Also you should release the ball on your way up when you jump not on the way down this instigates you into using your arm strength instead of your leg's explosiveness which provides you with the strength you need to actually make a shot said Tetsuo.
Um, I don't really follow she said. Here , let me demonstrate it to you again said Tetsuo as he shoot another shot which swished again. Just rely on your leg strength, keep your hands straight as it will guide the basketball to the hoop and align your body with the rim and trust me it will be hard to miss.
I see , I understand , I'll give it a try then said Haruko. Alright just remember what he told you she said to herself as she shot a mid-ranged shot but this time it swished. What? I can't believe it, It actually went in she said to herself with a shocked expression on her face.
See , it's not impossible to score a shot , you just have to do the right thing. That's the first shot I had scored since I came out here, I didn't think I could actually pull it off, thank you she said as she hugged Tetsuo.
I didn't do much, so could you please let me go. Oh I'm so sorry, it's just that I was so happy. I haven't told you my name did I? My name is Takahashi Haruko and you? Asked Haruko. My name is Tetsuo Kawaguchi. Do you actually play basketball for your school or as a hobby? Asked Tetsuo. I play basketball for my school, I attend Hachioji academy replied Haruko.I'm certain that my sister is also attending that school, this is a small world, huh Tetsuo said to himself.
Believe it or not I'm actually the power forward for my team and I might seem small to you but I'm the best defensive player they have . The only problem was that I couldn't even make a single shot in a game, not even from a free throw or a layup, which led to us loosing in either the first or second round. Even though my teammates try not to show it they are disappointed with me and view me as a burden ,they started talking bad things behind my back and calling me bad names.
But, everything will be different this year , since it's my last year in junior high school, I want to be someone my teammates can rely on when they feel pressured and also convince my parents that my time and efforts are not being wasted. The tournament is in four months I have to be ready by then.
Oh, I'm sorry for making you listen to all that, I don't know why I'm telling you all this said Haruko. It's okay, I don't mind listening. Oh I see, well then thank you for listening to me and showing me how to shoot ,it means alot said Haruko as she smiled. Continue shooting the way I showed you until you are ready to leave said Tetsuo and Haruko nodded in agreement.
