Chapter 95: Theft

Sitting in the restaurant, cutting her steak with a knife, Alice once again recalled her plan to make chopsticks.

"For chopstick materials... hmm, first I'd need two wooden sticks," she mused. "Wait, if this world once had an Earth-like civilization, and her current location was the equivalent of 'Europe', could there be an 'East' here too?"

Alice waved over a waiter.

"What can I do for you, madam?" the waiter inquired as he approached.

"Have you ever heard of... um, a type of utensil that's like two small wooden sticks of equal length, used together like this..." Alice did her best to describe chopsticks to the waiter.

The young waiter listened attentively to Alice's description, but ultimately shook his head apologetically. "I'm sorry, madam, but I've never heard of such utensils."

"I see. Thank you anyway," Alice sighed, waving the waiter away before returning to her struggle with the steak using her knife and fork.

Meanwhile, Mr. Fool, who had kicked Alice down into the gray fog for the umpteenth time, passed on a non-existent follower's request to Miss Justice, asking her to test if the bookmark hidden in the manuscript had any issues.

That evening, after completing the test with Susie's cooperation, Audrey reported her findings honestly.

Confirming that the bookmark indeed had problems, Klein sat in the silent palace and pulled Alice up again.

"We can now discuss how to obtain the 'Blasphemy Card'," Klein said, looking at Alice.

Seeing Alice's eyes light up, he quickly added, "We can't burn down the museum!"

Alice's excitement immediately deflated. She sighed and said, "Alright, first... there shouldn't be any demigods among the guards sent by the Steam Church. The only demigod in the exhibition hall is..."

"Bernadette," Klein said gravely.

"Exactly," Alice spread her hands. "Do you plan to make her father's relic disappear right under a demigod's nose, Mr. Newly-Minted Magician?"

Alice's words struck a chord with Klein. He suddenly realized that without performing magic, how could one be called a qualified magician?

However, that wasn't the main point right now...

As night fell, in the restored Roselle study, Bernadette sat on the steps near the ceiling, hugging her knees and gazing at the central desk, lost in thought.

The crystal chandelier on the ceiling used for lighting was turned off, and no candles were lit in the surrounding candelabras. The study was pitch black, with Bernadette's silhouette blending into the darkness.

Suddenly, she looked up and saw a transparent, almost invisible face appearing faintly on the ceiling.

The face was painted like a clown. Bernadette watched as the eerie face on the ceiling surveyed the exhibition hall, its eyeballs constantly moving, scanning the entire room.

—Naturally, it didn't notice her.

A Beyonder with special abilities... or a wraith? What is he trying to steal? The diary isn't in this hall...

Bernadette didn't reveal herself. Instead, she watched as the owner of the face, after confirming the hall was empty, passed through the ceiling and landed in front of the desk.

The desk...? Could his target be the manuscript?

Bernadette stood up and silently walked down the stairs, approaching the transparent figure.

Completely unaware, Klein reached out with both hands towards the bookmark in the creative manuscript under the glass cover, as well as another bookmark closest to it, enveloping them within his spirit body.

Then, feeling relieved, Klein reached out again for other bookmarks.

—A pea vine silently dropped onto his hand.

At the same time, a soft but emotionless female voice sounded behind him: "Why are you taking the bookmarks?"

"I think we don't need to consider Bernadette." Alice said while knocking on the table.

"Why?" Klein asked, puzzled.

Alice raised an eyebrow. "Because there's no point in considering it. Do you know what abilities she has? Do you think you could possibly defeat her?"

Klein fell silent.

"Until she reveals herself, we can assume she doesn't exist," Alice said, resting her chin on her hand.

"What if she does reveal herself?" Klein asked with a frown.

"Then make her believe you know her, or rather her father, even if you've already obtained the 'Blasphemy Card'," Alice replied with a wink. "You know what I mean, right?"

...

"Why did you only take the bookmark?" The female voice sounded again.

Klein slowly turned around. Intertwined pea vines formed a hammock-like chair, and Bernadette was sitting on it, gently swaying with the vines.

Looking at this fairy tale-like scene, Klein chuckled softly, "It seems your father has told you many of our fairy tales."

The swinging chair stopped. Klein felt the pressure on him suddenly intensify. Bernadette's voice, no longer gentle, rang out, "What relationship do you have with the 'Fool'?"

Bernadette didn't get the answer she wanted. The figure before her gave her a deep, penetrating look before vanishing instantly.

In the storage room of a wealthy merchant at 18 King's Road.

Alice stopped tossing the master key. She no longer leaned against the wall like a boneless creature but stood up straight, looking at Klein whose eyes had regained their sparkle and whose lips curved into a smile. She waved the master key in her hand as a gesture.

...

"Based on your description, this master key seems cursed," Alice said with an exasperated expression after hearing how the key had tricked its previous two owners. "I'm worried you might get lost in some strange place if you keep it."

"... Maybe you could try it?" Klein asked hesitantly. "As a 'Lucky One', perhaps you'd have better results with it than I would?"

"So I might survive in one piece?" Alice retorted.

"That shouldn't happen," Klein showed his blind trust in Alice. "Whether you're a potion ingredient for the Mercury Snake, or the Mercury Snake is your potion ingredient, you should at least reach Sequence 1 before dying."

Alice suddenly felt the urge to grab something and throw it at Klein, even though their bodies weren't actually in the gray fog.

...

After Klein and Alice cleaned up the ritual site, they used divination to determine their direction. Then, they used the master key to continuously open walls and doors, walking in a straight line.

Until the scent of blood wafted through the air and into their nostrils.
