"What makes you say that?" 

"We... Children, kids, they are made to be perfect, not perfect but better. In everything they try or that will be useful later in life. Maybe it doesn't happen with commoners much but for nobles, they are groomed to be the best they can be, to reach their potential whether they want to or not."

It sounds like she's speaking from experience. That may be too personal for me to dive in now... or ever. 

"It shouldn't be that way. Children... Kids, they're meant to be innocent, to enjoy their life without responsibility, at least until they feel the crippling pressure of adulthood" 

She doesn't say anything, simply goes back to the projector and opens a map of sorts. 

"Where are we going to take him out?" 

"We? You're here to be a distraction. We're aiming to take him out in public, somewhere there's witnesses." 

"If it's in public then I'll probably do a better job." 

"You do realise I'm a trained assassin?" 

"Your point?" 

"You have no training"

"I have a gun"

"No, you don't" 

I activate my skill and create a semi-ethereal gun, barely visible and only contains a bit of mana.

"Impressive but I don't think your party trick is going to take out a level 35"

"It's not a party trick. It gets stronger the more mana is supplied. It can also be moulded into a sniper rifle... theoretically"

"Sniper rifle?" How does she not know what a sniper is? 

"It's... it's meant for shooting people from a distance."

I use more of my mana and try to mould the shape of the gun into that of a sniper rifle, more specifically the SV-98M. I made this specific gun not because it's the best but because it's the only one I know how to make. It feels natural to me so I went with it. If I'm forced to make something else, this is good enough for now. 

If this was a normal gun then it would only be able to scratch a Level 9 Awakener. Luckily, this isn't a normal gun. The bullets are made of mana and I can only make 1 at a time. However, I should be able to make a single bullet every three seconds with the control over mana I have now. Although, if I want a stronger bullet I'll have to overload the skill. It's possible to hurt someone around this dude's level if I use all my mana and then aim for him. 

Thinking about it, being able to defeat him doesn't make much sense. If a simple (Not so simple) skill can bridge the gap between levels then there won't be as much importance on levelling alone. If I'm able to kill someone more than ten levels my senior then there's no point in even focusing on levels.

Luckily this girl has common sense. Damn, I almost killed both of us. I have to improve my skill set. Most of them are strong in the future and right now.

I haven't used the skills I got from the system yet. In the mental type skills, I picked two skills. One is [Analyze] and the other one is called [Needle]. It's a high-risk high-reward skill. From the description-

[Needle - can instantly learn something by shooting needles into their eyes and scalp. The number of needles needed to understand the concept depends on various factors such as the study of the field, your knowledge, skill level, etc. 1/10]

It looks like a skill that can give you skills, knowledge and things like that. The only problem is the way the knowledge is provided, through needles being injected directly into the brain or the place where the skill will take place. Knowledge is in the brain and practicality will be injected into muscles or something, I don't know I haven't used it yet.

I have time to activate this skill now and learn something to help in the future. The question is, what am I going to choose? Let me see... Okay, I have a lot of skills for attacking, mostly passive but there are also some active skills relatively powerful. Close to no defensive or support skills. I have the one [Buff and Debuff] but I'd rather have some kind of skill to increase regeneration or a healing-type skill.

I guess I should start with the defence then. I can't be of any support to my future self and team if I can't support myself. Defence. Mana manipulation can help create shields and similar things once I get the proficiency high enough but I'm unable to use it right now.

Elemental? Hmm, it could be a good choice but there'll always be drawbacks and I might not have enough mana when I'm down and that's when I'll need it the most. A defence skill that doesn't use mana and gets stronger with intent or in emergencies... Can I use a [Needle] to find skills that fit the description? Let me just try. Nothing to lose... apart from a few brain cells.

"Activate [Needle]"

"Provide information on a few passive and active defence skills that don't use mana." I have to whisper these things since Eva can't read my mind anymore. Bullshit.

"What?" She's colder now. I think she's getting used to my increased Charisma stat, if that's even the reason she's so... uh, I don't know. I can't articulate what I'm trying to describe about her.

"If I start screaming for no reason I'm fine. It's just a skill I'm activating"

"...okay?" Great. She doesn't understand but she has the spirit.

"Confirm."

Wow! I can hear colours!!

My vision fades in and out, turning black, red, orange, everything. I can't hear anything apart from a ringing and sometimes screeching. The pain... surprisingly there's no pain. That's not completely true, the pain is so bad that my brain, at the current moment, won't survive if it's able to perceive how much pain it's in. Yay. That's probably the only reason I haven't lost consciousness yet. No idea if that's how it works but I'm gonna go with it.

I start counting to distract myself until I'm back to normal.

917... okay. I'm back.

I look up and see Dina giving me an impressed look...? The fuck.

"W-cough-" Shit.

"Here" I grab the towel from her hand and cough into it. A lot of spit and some blood. Wait, that's not where my mouth is. I wipe my eyes and yep, I'm crying tears. How did I not pass out? The pain is lessening but why is my pain resistance this high? "That was slightly impressive"

"Hmm?" I don't trust myself to form words just yet.

"You didn't scream" I nod and fall back into the seat. How do you even reply to something like that?

Instead of calling out my status, I simply look for the icon in my vision and tap it. The simpler way is voice command but there is also a manual way such as touching the appropriate buttons. Did I think that before?

Status, skills, here, and got it.

{Passive Skills:

1. Resolute Defense: Increases the effectiveness of defensive abilities when the user's health drops below a certain threshold, fueled by the user's Vitality stat.

2. Emergency Reflexes: Automatically triggers a defensive maneuver when the user's health reaches a critical level, drawing strength from the user's Constitution stat.

3. Adrenaline Surge: Grants a passive bonus to defence whenever the user successfully avoids or blocks an incoming attack.

4. Last Stand: Provides a temporary increase to defence as the user's health decreases, reaching its maximum potential in dire situations, dependent on the user's endurance stat.

5. Steadfast Resolve: Grants a passive resistance to status ailments and debuffs, with the resistance increasing as the user's health decreases.

Active Skills:

1. Guardian's Shield: Temporarily creates an impenetrable barrier around the user, absorbing all incoming damage for a short duration, fueled by the user's Vitality and Strength stat.

2. Rallying Cry: Inspires allies within range, boosting their defence and providing a temporary morale boost during critical moments, drawing power from the user's charisma stat.

3. Vigilant Ward: Summons a protective aura that reduces incoming damage for all allies within its radius, with the effectiveness increasing based on the severity of the threat, powered by the user's wisdom, intelligence and mana stat.

4. Shield of Determination: Channels the user's resolve into a powerful defensive shield, blocking all incoming attacks and reflecting a portion of the damage back to the attacker, reliant on the user's constitution and dexterity stat.

5. Emergency Evade: Allows the user to perform a swift evasive maneuver to avoid incoming attacks entirely, consuming a portion of their health instead of mana.}

Hmm, I look through all the skills. Some of them aren't bad, really useful but I'm looking for the strongest thing at the moment. Hmm, if it reduces health I won't be able to use it. I'm trying to survive not kill myself. I'm not going to take a skill that increases defence, I need something that adds to defence entirely not just effectiveness.

The best choices are [Emergency Reflexes] [Adrenaline Surge] [Guardian's Surge] and [Shield of Determination]. These are the best choices.

I should be able to handle all those... maybe. Even if I can't, my entire body has a regeneration function so it should be fine. I hope. Just in case though.

"Dina?"

"Are you in love with me?"

"Uhh. What?"

"I know I selected you for this mission of my own accord but it does not mean you can force a connection between us in this enclosed space"

She has some weird thoughts.

"... So, I'm going to use the skill I used before to try and increase my strength as much as possible before we fight what-his-face. I'm not sure if I can handle the cost so can you give me a healing potion if I look critical?"

"Sure. Whatever" She seems pissed. Wonder why.

"Proceed"

... I don't feel anything as the light disappears.

Okay, I haven't got too far into this story yet so I'm thinking about having a lot of filler chapters. Non-canon. It won't be part of the actual story. Just because. It's going to be interactions between random characters you, the readers choose. Two, at most, three people from this story and the readers choose the situation and the characters.

It's either you, the readers choose characters and situations and I'll make an extra chapter for it or ... you make up your own OC's and then have them interact with one of mine. Y'all can be something similar to a co-writer for that chapter
