Chapter 7: Dead Road pt2!! Becoming a father??

 (Previously...)

The helping part was the highlight to that time, but I could still feel the betrayal of my so-called friends, it just brought bad memories. These are the reasons I try not to get involved with other groups, but there are a few that truly deserve the help I have offered. So far it's only been two groups that actually deserved the help I gave, and the thirteen that were in that small school back in Texas deserve a medal for helping their community.

Anyways, focusing back to the here and now. It just pained me to see them that way, so I lent a helping hand, call it a mercy if you will. I threw a small disposable knife through the dying man skull ending his suffering. One of the men that were running away had seen me kill their friend and it looked like they doubled back. I knew that once they lost the horde of zombies I would see them again.

I sure as hell didn't miss the greedy look on the one that saw me gave me as they turned the corner. So, I cleared the way to the convenience store, and killed the dead that was surrounding it. That helped them get to wherever they were going to get there. But before I wondered into the store, I made sure that I checked for nay sighs of life in the store. And it was a good thing that I did, there were three already in it and one of them had signs of infection.

I discovered a a glance that one of the men there was covering a bite on his hand. So, I told them what will happen sooner or later, "you know that once bitten, you will turn to one of them. I've seen it happen to a few friends more than once. I suggest you two," as I point at the others that were in there with the man that was bitten, "keep an eye on him, because once he shows sighs of turning, he will become violent."

The unbitten men turned to their bitten companion, and they started to step back away from him. But as young people always do, they don't believe a grown-up (I was their age, the little s**ts...). I still helped them get into and out safely from the convenient store they were so hard trying to get into. I killed the zombies that was around it, but right after, I grabbed a few things to eat and drink, then I left them to whatever fate befell them.

After leaving the young adults behind, I pulled out my .45 from my inventory. It was just in case I got robbed in this small town, hey never know, it could happen. And it almost did, right after turning the corner of the street I was walking on, I'm confronted by seven looters with steel pipes in their hands. I automatically went on the offensive and pointed my .45 at them as they tried to get close.

"Don't even think about it, chump!! Don't want to lose your life over nothing, do you?" As I pointed the gun at the seven, they looked scared as I pointed the gun in their faces. They had actually seen me help the other survivors in the store and thought of looting the stuff I had attained from there. Since they didn't see me use a gun earlier, they thought I was an easy steal for them, haaaa, "better try harder next time, fools."

"I say move along, before I use this and make some breather holes in all of you." I said as I waved them to leave, while they still had the chance. They ran away quickly; I saw them run into a building a few blocks away from the convenience store. So, they knew those kids from earlier and maybe this was all a trap. Well, lesson learned, never trust anyone, especially young adults, they're as sly as the older ones.

As time went on, minutes turn to hours as I kept walking toward the hospital trying to reach my next destination. Ten minutes later, I had finally made it to Rick's neighborhood, which meant that I was close to the hospital that he's in right now. I didn't want to be seen by anyone, so I kept myself hidden as I traveled through the back yards of these houses. I could see Rick's house from where I was at.

And I could also see that Morgan and his son had already moved into Rick's neighbors house. I could tell because before I turned the corner of the street that Rick's house was on, I saw a young black kid playing on the street. Not soon after, the boy ran away suddenly into the house where a young woman was calling the bot to, that meant that Morgan's wife was still alive, and I can prevent her from getting bit.

No, maybe on the way back, I was not going to stop at all for now. So, I ignored the kid and the woman and kept walking towards my destination, the hospital. That's where I'll find lots of s**t I could loot, I know it was a dangerous area, but it was so worth it and its out of the place for anyone to come to investigate. Well anyways, I kept walking and to my surprise, thirty minutes later, the hospital was in view.

That's when I paused, it was surrounded by a s**t ton of zombies walking about. But the loot would make it all worth it, it had all types of military goodies as far as I could see. I'll be taking all for myself and maybe I'll help others along the way with a few things here and there, but they need to earn the right for me to help them, if not... well, tough s**t for them.

As I neared the hospital, I had to stop in my tracks, because fifteen to twenty walkers were heading my direction and that wasn't good. So I backed off and I needed to prepare what equipment I would need to clear this zone. I peeked out again and saw that the few that were walking my way weren't exactly looking for me, they were being attracted by a wind chime that was hitting the side of a house near me.

They roamed passed me as I stayed quiet, soon after passing me I looked at the hospital area and saw that most of the walkers had left the area, and it looked like only ten or twelve were left roaming around the hospital parking lot. So, I pulled out my M-4 automatic rifle, attached the silencer to it, and went to town on the zom-bows. One shot to the head as I fired my gun at them, hitting them all between the eyes as I walked closer to them.

Hey, I've been practicing as I traveled, and I'm a very good shot, thank you very much. Well, after ending the outside threat, I started collecting everything into my inventory that can be used for later. I collected 2 1097A2 Humvee's up armored, 2 mid-sized M35 A2 duce and a halves with tarp cargo liner, 2 small trailer fuel tanks full of fuel (500 gals each tank), well one those were. The other was about ¾ full, but hey a good find.

The 1097A2 cargo trucks were half filled to the brim with MRE's (Meals Ready to Eat) and ammo cases for all the weapons that lay on the ground. In which I collected, there were 38 M16 A2 rifles with 84 magazines full of 5.56 ammunition, that was laying throughout the hospital grounds as I searched around for more goodies. That's not including what's inside the hospital yet, haven't checked yet.

I kept collecting weapons as I walked closer to the hospital doors. There were still many types of weapons on the ground, 4-50 caliber machine guns, with a lot of ammunition in crates beside the guns, 2-249's with laser scopes attached to them, and 12 M17 Sig Sauer military 10mm pistols that were on a few bodies as I searched through the ones that were dead already.

It seemed a few officers gave their lives defending this place. And WOW!!! I was surprised, usually officers are the first people to run away from a losing fight when it comes to military conflicts. Well, in my experience, they were... 90% of them run away, but I guess there are a few exceptions. Well anyways, back to the looting, after what seemed hours, (1hour... stop exaggerating Jack!!), "Who the f**k said that?"

As I looked around, stayed quiet, and waited for a few minutes. And when I got no answer... yup, I'm going crazy, I'm hearing voices. Anyways, let's continue the looting. After cleaning out the outside of all its niceties, and goods. I headed to the main entrance of the hospital, that was why I worked my way in collecting and searching for loot. Now before I stepped in, I pulled out a new set of two .45's, those being my favorite weapons to hold by the way.

(There were custom made for someone, but I found them and loved them ever since I laid eyes on them, their mine now... suckers!!) with silencers just in case I needed to kill something in there. As soon as was ready, I entered the building, slowly making my way to the stairs. And what I saw in there was scary no doubt, it was a mess in here, and by that, I mean so much blood was on the floor.

It looked like someone poured bright red paint on the floor and it was still wet and drying. There was a few blotches of the white on the floor that you could still see, but not much that wasn't painted red. I walked in slowly and softly, so that I would not get anything's attention as I make my way and clear floor by floor. As I cleared each room, I cleaned out everything that could possibly be used in a community or by oneself.

I took the beds, the IV stands, all the health monitors, all the linen that wasn't stained with blood, even took the silver platers that doctors use for laying the shots or cutting utensils on. I was tempted into taking the bathroom toilet and sink. Hey, I wanted too, but thought it would be useless down the road. Unless I decided to throw it at something or at someone, well they may be useful.

Well anyways, continuing, after clearing the second floor of walkers which I saw none, and loot, I had made it to the stairwell going up to the third floor. Once making it to that floor was when I spotted the first walker in the building, I wondered how many are still here. Any who, I killed it pretty easily, as it fell and hit the floor, and me for being an idiot and not checking the floor before I killed it.

The walker landed on one of those silver plates I talked about earlier. It made a huge racket as it bounced around on the floor, which brought the attention of the dead that were still roaming in this joint. I wasn't too scared of them coming, but I had a plan and now it was ruined. I quickly reloaded my guns and now I was ready for whatever came at me. But I kept thinking, what if I was overwhelmed by walkers at one time, then that be a problem.

I always do that when pressured, think the worst first, and to my unfounded worry, only seven walkers appeared on this floor. In which I killed quickly and looted the place as fast as I could search each room, it was a big wing, and then proceeded to the fourth. And there's where I encountered another problem, the entrance stairwell was blocked by what looked like a few vending machines.

That meant that this floor was still occupied by someone or a few of someone's. So, I creeped slower to the top stairs, watching every corner that I could see from, making sure not to get surprised by anything. As I neared the heavy vending machines, I heard some scrambling noises in one of the opened rooms that I was facing. I hadn't crossed the vending machines yet, but I was still alert to any noise on that floor.

So, I pointed my .45 at the room where the noise came from and waited to see if anything or anyone came out. Making my way over the vending machines, my sight stayed glued to the room where the noise came from. And after waiting for several minutes behind the door, I called out, "anyone in there? Come on out, I come in peace. I swear to God, I won't hurt you." And I waited again, which after a minute I finally got a response.

"You pro...om...ise, not... to hurt me?" A small child's voice came out from the room I had mt guns pointing too. "Yes, I swear to you, little one. Now, please come out so I could see you." I responded back to the small voice to see who would come out and I lowered my guns so she wouldn't get scared of me. And loo and behold, it was a little girl, did not look older than 8 years old, maybe 10. Hey, you never know with this time and age.

As I put away the guns into my inventory by showing the little girl that I was placing it behind my back, I walked nearer to her. Then I asked the little girl a question, "where are your parents, little one? Why are you here alone? Who has been looking after you?" I asked her these three questions as I could see she was getting more nervous as I kept questioning her, so I stopped. The little girl didn't answer as she kept looking down at the floor.

I tried to reassure her that she wasn't in trouble, to see if I could make her tell me where her parents were. "Don't worry sweety, I won't be mad. I just want to know where your parents are at. So, I can take you to them, it's not good to be alone in a place like this. They must be worried about you." I said as she shook her head at what I said last, then said, "Noo... Mr. They were fighting those things and died protecting me while getting me in here."

"The last time I saw them, they were being surrounded by ten of those walking things when my mom made me enter the front door from there." As she pointed at a window that was in the room she was in. "I haven't seen them since then. That was a week ago. They are not coming back." She looked sad after telling me about her parents and started crying as she balled herself up into a ball on the floor.

It started to break my heart, how her parents gave up their lives for their own child, 'what wonderful parents she must have had' I said to myself in my thoughts. "I... I'm so so sorry to hear that, sweety. You know what?" That was when I decide to take her with me. I was also tired of being alone all the time. And I've never had children before, and a daughter would be a great start for me. Maybe it will help me look at the world differently.

"Would you like something to eat? I have plenty. How about some chocolate? I know I have it somewhere in here." As I dropped my backpack in front of her and started searching for the chocolate bar, which I pulled out from my inventory as I searched my bag. I have... I would say... ten years' worth of food in my inventory as of right now. That's because I've raided almost every large grocery stores of their food stock when I saw one.

So far I've raided twelve stores of their goods in the past few days since I've been in Atlanta. The girl face looked happier when I said I had chocolate, and that she was going to get to eat that chocolate. As I stared at the little girl for a few seconds, I noticed that she hasn't eaten any food for a while. The anticipation of the food was being seen on her face. As I pulled the bar from my pack, she nearly ate my hand off.

After giving it to her, she tore the rapper apart and devoured the snickers chocolate bar almost in one bite. "Mmmh, than' yu' mishter. I missed the taste of chocolate; it's been a while." She said with sincerity in her voice as she continued devouring the bar and hiding her face while doing it. "You're welcome sweety." As I moved the vending machines out of the way from the stairs so we could escape quicker if needed to.

I walked around the fourth floor to see how the little girl was living up here and maybe guess how long she'd been here alone, because a week is a long time, and someone without food or water would have died already. Taking a quick gander around, I would say she's been here for around ten days. Let's ask her and find out, "umm sweety? How long have you been here by yourself? Do you remember what date was it that you were left here?"

I asked as she put on a child thinking kid pose, with her finger on her bottom lip. It was so cute, I wanted to hug her, but no... I resisted. "I think eight or nine days ago. It was the 16 of August because it was the time we were going to visit grampa in Atlanta, but we came here. My mom left me a small bag of food with some water over there." As she pointed at a small bag behind the door, which I checked, all the food was almost gone.

"Then left to help my daddy that was outside fighting those things. One of those things had bitten mommy before she left me here. I miss them. Could you find them for me, mister?" I shook at her request making her look down and a little sad. "I'm sorry, but if they haven't returned by now sweety... I don't they will return, there are a lot of those things around everywhere in this city. Again, I'm sorry sweety."

I sounded like an a**hole right now, but I had to tell her the truth, so that she wouldn't be dumb enough to run out to them if she ever saw them in dead walker form. Don't want her to get hurt, not on my watch. "Well, my name is Jack, Jack Willson!! What's yours?" I asked trying to get her mind off her dead parents as I reached out to shake her hand. "My name is Olivia, Olivia Watson. I am 8 years old, and I love riding ponies."

I laughed because she only had seven fingers up when she said eight, but she was so cute that I let it pass. "WOW, that's great. You had a pony? I love large horses, they are nice. I used to ride one when I worked at a farm a long time ago." I said trying to cheer her up and it helped, if just a little bit. "Really!! You used to work on a farm? So did my daddy, he used to work with this guy named Hershel Greene."

"He was nice to us, but we had to leave because my mommy's mommy was hurt, and we had to visit grandpa. So, we came looking for her here after we tried to look for grandpa. Then those things attacked my mommy and daddy." She was starting to get sad again, when she mentioned her mommy. "How about this, you can come with me, and I will take care of you from now on. Or we could go to the farmers house, and you could stay with them?"

"What do you say, Olivia?" She looked pensive at my request, she was a smart little girl for her age, it didn't matter to me. If she wanted to go and stay at the Greene's house, I'd take her and keep her safe till then. "Okay, Mister Jack. I'll go with you. Are you going to be my new daddy? I don't want to be alone." She looked hopeful at what I'd answer next. "Anything you want sweety. If you want me to be your new daddy, it's okay with me."

"I would love a little smart girl like you to be my daughter. I never had a daughter, it'll be fun." Her face lit up like a Christmas tree and ran to me and hugged me. Well, I got a daughter, yay me. Now let's continue looting the rest of the floors. So, I pulled out a small backpack from my large backpack and a new set of clothes for Olivia. I wanted her to be ready to move and wit the new set of clothes and shoes, she'd be ready.

We didn't need for her clothes to get caught on something if we needed to make a quick escape. "Olivia, I want you to wear this and stay in that room as I check the rest of this place, okay? Close the door behind you and don't open it for anyone but me. Okay!!" As I hand her the new clothes, socks, and a small new pair of boots to wear. "I'll only be gone for an hour the most, I promise. Can you do that for me, Olivia?"

As she grabbed the change of clothes I offered and then said, "Okay daddy, but you promised to come back." I nodded to her, "I will, I promise. Now stay in there and don't come out for anything. Not even if someone else comes, can you do that for me?" She nodded as she walked into the room, and I closed it behind her. I walked back to the vending machines and placed them into my inventory.

I then placed them right in front of the room door Olivia was in, to protect the entrance with a heavy object that's hard to move. After that, I continued looting each floor. The fourth, the fifth, and then the last floor, the sixth, where Rick was supposed to be in. As well as all the walkers that were being kept locked up here as well, the cafeteria or waiting area of the hospital.

As I neared the top of the stairs, I noticed a gurney that was blocking the entrance to a room close to the stairs. I skipped it for now and went where all the walkers were in. I had to make sure that they were put down first before I started cleaning out the rest of the floor. Don't want to be cornered in a room by surprise. As I looked through the chained entrance doors of the mess hall, I saw over forty walkers in there.

So, I did what I had to and gave them all mercy. I pulled out my trusty M4A4 out again and unloaded a good 2 magazines on the walkers, bringing them all down without a problem. I finished them off pretty quickly, and then suddenly heard a moan and a cough coming from the closed room behind the gurney. That meant that Rick is about to awaken, and I was not going to be here when that happened.

He needed to confront the dead as he needs to realize the world has changed and make his way home on his own. So, I hurried and looted the rest of the floors and all their goodies and left to pick up Olivia from the fourth floor. After removing the vending machine out of the way, I knocked on the door to let Olivia know that I was back, and I complete my promise to her. "Olivia!! I'm back. Now let's pack up, it's time to leave."

When she opened the floor, she looked like she had been crying, I hugged her and said, "what's the matter sweety? Are you okay? Were you scared being alone again. You don't have to worry anymore; I'll never leave you alone again. I promise, okay?" She was sniffling when a small nick-up came out of her mouth. She nodded and rushed for me to hug her, and I was obliged to accommodate her wishes.

"I thought I would never see you again, Jack. Like my mommy and daddy, they said they wouldn't leave me alone. And they never came back." I rubbed her back in small circles, then said, "I'm here, I'm never gonna do that again. I promise, where I go, you go as well, from now on, okay?" She nodded and I hugged her again. Then a few minutes later, we packed her small things in her backpack, and we left the hospital.

Well, Olivia and I have just about rounded the corner of a gas station a few blocks away from the hospital. After raiding that place to its bare bones, we made our way to see how it would look if I met the cast at the quarry. Should I change the plot? Should I off that ass? The one called Ed, or Shane for that matter? Maybe I should, if they get on my nerves when I get there maybe I will. "SIGH" Let's see if I even see the cast first.

I know it shouldn't be long since Rick has woken up. Should have I just killed the guy? Yes!! But would it change anything? I don't think it would. Now I know I said I should kill the guy if I ever met him, but just listen. Would Shane do a better job than Rick? I don't believe he would. Shane was already starting to show that he was unstable, from the get-go. Imagine him being in charge and killing every person they met.

That would not be good, and that obsession with Rick's wife, Lori. That probably pushed over the edge since before the outbreak. So, I think I'll leave things as they are, but I will change a few things from the start. Like with Carol losing Ed a little sooner and maybe hooking Daryl with her from the start. Maybe that will change the attitude of his brother Merle toward her and Sophia her daughter, hey I can hope too, you know.

Anyways, back to the gas station, as Olivia and I silently moved toward the gas station, we saw several walkers lurking around the windows of the station. And that only meant someone living is in there and the walkers can't get to him or them. I am not risking Olivia for no one; she has become my main priority since she chose me as her father, and I mean to keep her safe at all times, so her safety comes first.

So, what did I do? We backtracked a block away, where we had passed what looked like an old glass encased telephone booth. I put her on top of the booth and told her to lay down on the top. Then I told her to not make any noise as I go check who's in the gas station that those walkers are eyeing at. She nodded in response, "Be careful daddy." She said worryingly. Again the warm caring heart heated up in me.

I love the way she cared for my well-being, even though she's only known me for less than a day. After making sure she was safe, I brought out my two .45's (favorite guns...) and readied them for action. Aiming forwards towards the walkers, I slowly approached the station, watching for any signs of life from the inside as I peered through the side windows of the store. Not able to see anything, I proceeded to killed the walkers that stalked the outside.

After downing the few walkers that were there, I approached the front glass doors peering in. I was still unable to see anything, so I slowly tried to push the doors open, to no avail. Something was baring the door shut or probably has latches for that. So, I did the next best thing, I moved to the back of the gas station and checked if it had a back door. What? You thought I was going to kick the doors in, you did... didn't you?
