**Chapter 45: Wolf Hunt**

1. What's your favorite movie?

2. Do you guys have any hobbies?

3. Would you be willing to transmigrate into Bai Ning Bing after 'the incident'?

------------------

"Please don't kill me," the girl said in a low voice, looking as if she was about to cry. She did not even look me in the face, as if she had already given up on life.

'I guess there goes my 'best friend' strategy.'

"I will not," I assured her with a calm voice. Although I knew it was a lie, her life and death were indeed still to be decided.

"You're a brave one, aren't you?" I asked her with a small smile. "Or would you call it greedy? To stay in this competition while only being a rank 1 Gu master…"

She looked even further to the ground, evidently feeling regret and maybe even a bit of shame.

'Ahhh… when it's about life and death, emotions become a bit… strong.'

"Say, do you want to live? Truly want to?" I asked her, looking at her with a serious expression.

After a period of silence, as I just stared at her, and she stared at the ground, she softly said, "I do."

"Let us help each other then," I said, and without waiting, took the first step in her direction.

She panicked a bit about me approaching her, but it's not like she could even stand up, let alone run from me.

And before anything could come of this situation, I had already reached her and kneeled down, so our eyes were on the same level.

"Here, use this," I said as I handed her my rank 2 root healing Gu.

The weakness of it was that it could not be used on other people, but like most Gu, it could still be 'lent' away.

She took my Gu with her right hand, and it instantly vanished into her aperture. A few moments later, roots grew from her legs and inserted into the ground beneath them.

'Interesting how this Gu works when one is sitting down…'

After the roots set themselves into the ground, the grievous wound on her shoulder slowly started to heal.

What I instantly noticed was that the Gu worked slower than when I activated it.

'No surprise there, she is a rank 1 Gu master after all…'

I honestly doubted if she would have even been able to activate the rank 2 Gu in her state if it wasn't a wood path one.

These were my musings as I waited for her to regenerate back into a presentable state.

"I am out of primeval essence," she said in her, by this point already usual tone. At least she had gained the confidence to look me straight in the eyes.

*Thud*

The bag of about 30 primeval essence stones I carried around landed next to her.

"Use those to regain it. We will leave once your wound has closed," I said with a serious tone.

In response, she just nodded and began to absorb the primeval essence from the stones to continue activating the Gu. Fortunately, the roots did not die off, meaning all the primeval essence she regained could be used to actually heal her wound.

About 30 minutes later, I stretched out my left hand, looking at her like it was obvious what I wanted.

It was obvious, as it turned out, as she stretched out her own and gave me back my Gu.

"So, why did you not kill me? Do you have no interest in the Inheritance?" she asked in a suspicious tone.

"My name is Zhen Wei, by the way," I answered with a smile on my face.

"I know who you are, your head is worth a hundred thousand primeval stones," she blurted out.

I just continued to smile at her, waiting for her to continue.

"My name is Xu Long Yi…"

"So, Xu Long Yi, tell me, how did you end up in this situation?"

"I was greedy, did not get out of the Inheritance. Upon entering here, I was attacked by this wolf…" she pointed at the wolf's corpse 5 meters from where we stood"

I looked at it, then back at her, the smile not leaving my face for a second.

"Then I waited for death, before meeting you," she said matter-of-factly.

'Hmmm… I expected her to talk more. Unconsciously extending her life…'

'Hehehe, the human mind is and remains a mystery… Well, to me at least…'

"I will tell you what will happen now: I will subdue beasts, and you will kill them." She looked at me with shock in her eyes.

"After you kill 100, you will tell me the hint to the Inheritance, and we will get it together," I paused to let my words sink in.

"To be frank, what you will get out of this will depend on your work ethic as well as my gain and mood."

"But I can assure your safety…"

*Swoosh*

*Swoosh*

*Swoosh*

Two Gu masters were running through the deep forest, one of them fully exerting herself, dripping sweat, while the other looked almost bored.

All of a sudden, the man among the two raised his hand, causing both of them to stop in their tracks.

"There is a group of about 20 a few hundred meters in front of us," said the man.

"Hmmm…" answered the woman.

Hearing her response, the man instantly disappeared, at a speed a few times faster than they had been traveling, in the direction of the enemies.

As I moved back in the direction of Long Yi, about 10 minutes after I left her, I felt the wind against my face.

'These should definitely be enough for the first hint…'

Abruptly, I stopped in front of Long Yi for the sixth time today. For the first few times, she had managed to amuse me by being audibly surprised.

"Let's go!" I commanded her.

*Swoosh*

*Swoosh*

Two minutes later, we arrived at a small clearing, home to a small pack of wolves. Or at least it was, as now all of them lay on the ground. The vast majority of them had already lost consciousness, with the 3 or 4 that reached rank 2 barely awake, but spasming on the ground.

My female companion reached into her robe, taking out a knife. Something I had given her, by the way, as to my shock she was thoroughly unprepared for this Inheritance.

With practiced ease, she went around to each wolf, one by one, cutting open their throats. And after about half of them bled to death, she looked up at me and said:

"I just got the first hint!" with a big smile on her face.

Her smile was not as big as mine, though…

'So my theory was right, I can abuse the rules… hehehe…'

"So?" I asked her with a raised eyebrow.

"In the half wolf cave, as the half moon rises…" she answered.

"That's all?" to which she just nodded her head.

"Pfff…"

'Stay calm, Zhen Wei… Stay calm…'

'Insults don't bring you anywhere… so leave that insufferable, rhyming, riddler imitation, annoying-ass land spirit alone.'

"Finish up here, and we will go looking for a cave that looks similar to a wolf," I said in a noticeably colder tone. "Or do you have a better idea?"

"Maybe the cave only looks like that with moonlight shining on it?" she asked, looking incredibly nervous, before going back to ruthlessly slaughtering the wolves.

'Hmmm, maybe…'

*7 hours later*

Long Yi and I stood in front of a cave that formed out of a hill—a big one, but nothing I would call a mountain.

"What do you think?" I asked in a neutral tone.

"I think that is it!"

"Good," I answered. And as I looked at the sky and saw it becoming dim, I said, "Just wait here…"

It had taken us 4 hints, or 400 beasts killed, to find this Inheritance. And to be honest, the first one was the least cryptic, as it only got worse from there. Even still, we were only about half confident that we had actually found the right point.

Long Yi sat down while I still had some things to do. Interestingly enough, the requirement for this Inheritance was split into multiple hints.

In my opinion, this was a very good sign. I could not imagine a rank 1 or 2 Inheritance having such strict requirements.

These thoughts did not distract me from my mission, as I summoned a few intact corpses of rank 2 wolves from my Greedy Toad Gu.

*Ribbit*

There were only 5 corpses, but with them being rank 2, they would all be considered mutated monsters in my past life, weighing about a metric ton each.

They were special, as I did not let my partner kill them, but ended them with poison instead.

Throwing one of the wolves into the cave, I cut its throat, causing the blood to start flowing in liters. To amplify this effect, I activated the fast flow Gu on it.

The blood went from flowing to literally exploding out of its body onto all the surrounding walls. This went on for about 30 seconds before the wolf had no blood left.

'This went surprisingly well…'

But I was far from done; the cave went in as far as 30 meters, but only a few of those had been covered in wolf's blood…

All of it had to be covered, so I went and got the next wolf to continue my… artwork.

Half an hour later, I sat down opposite Long Yi in exhaustion, covered from head to toe in blood.

'I hope I have a few hours to recover...' not because I was out of primeval essence—I lost none. But because I was mentally exhausted, looking for any potential inheritance, beasts, enemies, and most importantly, potential betrayal.

It takes a lot of energy and concentration to do this for a few hours, not to mention half a day.

'I don't know if I will get long to recover though…' as the night began to set in already.

*3 hours later, midnight*

*Tap* *Tap*

*Tap* *Tap*

*Tap* *Tap*

Long Yi tapped her right foot on the ground again and again, clearly nervous that nothing had happened yet.

'Hmmmm… is this the wrong place?' I asked myself as I continued to casually peel off the dried blood from my skin. My hands were clean by now, and I had moved on to my legs.

'Of course, I could have used a Gu for this, but I was kind of bor…'

*BOOM*

Without having time to react, the entrance to the cave was sealed with an additional wall of stone, casting the cave into darkness.
