Chương 40: Meeting Her

A glimpse of purple changed everyone's expression.

"Ha! I told you Ning Chuan would win." Tang Wulin snickered. He watched the dust clear and it revealed Ning Chuan, heavily burned.

The scorched earth, which he used to boost his defense, fell. He fell on his knees and his head slowly dropped.

A few meters behind him stood Li Chen in perfect shape, staring at the arrow that had pierced through him.

He blinked twice, unable to believe Ning Chuan was able to make such a tiny yet crucial hit during their collision.

Having an arrow through him wasn't something he imagined.

He lifted his jade and stared at it. Ning Chuan did the same.

Both of them looked at the jade and the new numbers.

Candidate points: 200,000.

Seeing his points, Li Chen looked back and saw Ning Chuan's particles flying towards the clouds.

Dragging his feet, Li Chen walked through the colossal structure, grunting with each step. After a while, he fell, leaned against a pillar and stared at the sky.

'I don't know if people ask themselves this question but why am I still alive?'

He sighed and lowered his head. Time trickled by and unknowingly, everyone—prodigies and elders alike—watched the lone man nestled in the comfort of his silence.

In that spot, he burst into particles.

A man's eyelids trembled and opened, revealing his obsidian irises. He found himself standing at the bottom of a grand staircase made to the top of a mountain.

"You passed. Take your jade to the contribution hall and you'll get your uniform and abode." said a pretty girl garbed in a light green external robe and a white internal robe with white silk boots said to him.

[Thank you. How do I get there?]

She blinked because of the floating words but it still couldn't dampen her awe for him. To introduce a genius of this caliber was an honor.

"Your jade will lead you."

As Li Chen walked past them, he heard another girl whisper to the girl who introduced him.

"That mask looks like a high-grade artifact. It even made his words tangible!"

"He's probably from a rich family." The girl replied.

Li Chen stared at several young-looking men and women garbed in light green robes walking up and down. Most were returning from missions and he knew from their discussion.

Although he had this mask on, it wasn't worth giving him a second glance.

'This is good. I'm just a little unique in looks,' Li Chen thought.

A few steps further, he found Ning Chuan prancing about. The moment the brute saw him, he summoned his hammer and pointed it at him.

"I challenge you to a duel!"

[If you buy me an artifact of the same star as yours, then I'll think about it.]

"You want me to buy you a 2-star immortal-grade artifact only to think about it?!"

[Yes.]

"Are you crazy?!" Ning Chuan yelled.

[You don't seem serious about the duel. What a pity.] Li Chen sighed ruefully and walked past a stunned Ning Chuan.

Li Chen reached the top, his eyes glued to a massive plaque.

'Atumun Haven's sect. Such powerful will." He gasped and walked through the gate. Countless students went about their duties so he didn't feel important. Such a good way to suppress whatever pride taking the first position gave him.

The jade glowed brighter until he finally arrived before the contribution hall. It was inside a courtyard that had a circular gate design.

There was no gate, just the frame.

In a surprising way, he looked past two circular openings and saw the main courtyard, which was populated with fresh disciples.

"Who is this, Li Chen? I killed twenty people, so how many did he kill to gain 200,000 points?!" Someone yelled.

"He's there." Ren Xing, who just came out of the building, pointed at Li Chen.

Everyone turned to the man standing outside the gate. Though his mask was mesmerizing, it also gave him a mysterious aura.

'Thanks for the unnecessary introduction.' Li Chen said it inwardly and moved.

The crowd divided, leaving a clear path for him to pass. Walking into the hall without trouble, he approached the counter.

"Name?" A man asked softly.

[Li Chen.]

The man looked around at the middle and bottom parts of the scroll and his brows furrowed. "I don't see your..." His voice vanished when he saw Li Chen's name in the first spot.

"This is your uniform. Here is a mortal-grade storage ring. Give me your jade so I'll register it."

Li Chen gave him the jade and the man channeled energy into it. To Li Chen's awe, the map of the sect was sent into the jade, his autumn points, which would grant him entry to privileged structures and finally his name.

Pointing at the door situated at the end of the massive hall, which had several pillars and other students, the man spoke:

"You can change there."

Nodding, Li Chen changed and emerged. He looked at the fitting attire. For reasons unknown, his mask lost its deep golden shade and gained a lighter one.

The blend went nicely with the new color he wore.

Attaching his jade to his belt, he summoned the 5-star-mortal-grade sword that was inside the storage ring and held it.

On his way out, he met Ning Chuan, who scowled and walked past him. 'What a bad-tempered fellow.'

Following the lead of the jade, he arrived at his abode. It was a small building that had a bed and a few other necessities. It was at least better than those who shared their rooms with a roommate.

Most of the buildings were attached to rocks but they had courtyards, though it wasn't large, it was alright.

This made Li Chen ponder about those who were below the level of an outer disciple. While examining the building, his thoughts trailed.

'I should probably get some pills to boost my cultivation speed. My current level won't keep me at the top for long.'

While he thought, a paper bird flew over.

'Old Cat, come.' After those words, there was an address and nothing else on the paper.

'I didn't expect to see her this early.'

He followed the address, went up the mountain, and arrived at a beautiful courtyard with peach trees. The material used to build the abode was of high quality.

The abode was much bigger than his own and the curtains were made from high-class silk! The courtyard had a training platform, a spacious backyard, and peach trees to relax in. 'What kind of treatment does a core disciple get then?! Live on floating paradises!'

He entered the building, asked a maid, and went to the backyard. In the backyard stood a figure with her hands at her back, staring at the clouds below the cliff.

Behind her was a table, a wine bottle, and two cups.

[You called.]

Hearing his voice, Xiu Ying turned, the corners of her lips curling upward into a smirk.

"Come over. Or are you going to stand there like an old cat once again?"
