The scallions given by the uncle downstairs were really good.

The stems were tender, locally grown small red-tipped scallions; the heads were a purplish red, and the white roots still had some slight earth on them, looking not so clean.

But they were so fresh that even Xiaofeng, when washing the vegetables, couldn't bear to handle them roughly.

Yet, thinking of the scallion oil rice her son would eat, she felt a pang of sorrow: the child was too sensible, knowing their home's situation was tough, he never asked for any expensive food.

But with their family's circumstances laid bare, Xiaofeng couldn't indulge her son with fine food and drink, she only did her utmost to make the food that little bit tastier.

She brought out the clay pot from home, rinsed a box of rice, and mixed in some oil and salt.

Then she put back the discounted vegetables she had just bought from the supermarket into the refrigerator, leaving out only those two bunches of scallions.
