Chương 6: "Girl with a Pearl earring"
In the Lions Gate films building, the auditions for the movie "Girl with a pearl earring" were going on.
Outside the studio, many girls between the age of 16 to 22, stood there to wait for their turn of audition. Seeing so many girls waiting, its hard to believe that these all are the girls who have gone through initial selection and are specifically invited to audition. Its difficult to believe, but is also understandable.
In hollywood, a place where resources are few and the people competing for them are numerous, such situations happen everyday. Among these girls, stood Anne with her waiting token in her hand.
After getting many rejections in a row, the girl has become quite stable. Maybe the rejections benifited her more, when comparing to the unhappiness she faced after them. Because she who was overly confident just few weeks ago, has changed into a truly stable and mature girl. There is no look on her face saying that she's the best and the most beautiful. Even if it is, then it is hidden deep in her heart.
Anne looked at the girls around her and signed. She could see many famous figures of future among these girls, like Anne Hathaway, Emmy rossum, Rachel McAdams and many more. They are also at the starting point of their careers.
After a while, a candidate came out of the audition studio, and the person in charge called for the next candidate: "Next, Anne Davis."
Anne heard her name and went inside the studio.
Inside the studio, there were four people sitting in front a table. Two producers Anand Turker and Andy Paterson, one lead actor Colin Firth, one member of screen actors union and the last one, Director Peter Webber, the soul of the film.
Director Webber didn't waste time and directly went straight to the point: "You can read the lines." He signaled to a staff member standing aside, who then gave Anne a paper.
Anne took the paper and read the lines on the paper in her mind. She closed her eyes for a while, and tried to practice them in her mind.
The five people sitting behind the table saw the whole process. The girl looked at the page, closed her eyes for a while and then opened them.
The performance started__
The maid Griet enters the room where the house mistress and her mother were sitting. The mistress looks at her: "Yes?"
Griet speaks: "About studio mistress. May I change the lights?"
The mistress gives a sarcastic look: "No need to ask me about such matters." Why would those windows need to be cleaned.
Griet lowers her head: "It may change the lights."
Both the house mistress and her mother were stunned, and looked at the girl. The girl is uneducated, but there is always a strange light about her, seeking more knowledge about painting whenever she can. The poverty and backwardness couldn't cover the shine in girl's eyes. One can always see the desire and hope in those passionate yet hidden eyes.
The performance ends__
No one spoke for a while. Anne looked at the the people, trying to see any changes in the expressions, but there were no emotional fluctuation which could be detected.
Producer Andy coughed and broke the silence: "Miss Davis, you can leave now, we will inform the results to your agent in few days."
Anne nodded and left the studio. This is the normal protocol, no matter whether a person is selected or not, the results are never announced at the moment of audition.
The moment Anne left the studio, a discussion broke out.
Producer Andy said: "She was fantastic."
The other producer Anand and Actor Colin Firth nodded, and they all looked at Director Webber for his remarks.
Peter Webber nodded: "She was the best till now, but not because of her performance. There are many others who gave good performances, but only in her performance, I didn't see a moment where she tried to get out of her character or to show her acting skills. She acted as much as the performance required."
He raised his hand: "I agree with her."
Colin Firth agreed with Director's point and also raised his hand. As a famous British actor and someone who has done Broadway, he could see the same type of familiarity from the girl. She acted as much the play required, like actors do in Broadway.
In Broadway, it is always a group performance and you have to keep up with others, no matter how excellent you individually might be. That's the reason why many people advise young actors to go to Broadway to hone their acting skills.
One important quality of a good actor is that he never tires to make himself bigger than his role. He was very surprised to find such a quality in an actor who is so young, and has not even started his career as an adult successfully.
Producer Andy said: "I too agree with you, but we should complete the rest of the audition. Maybe, we can find someone better."
There is a person from Screen actors union sitting in the room, so, they can't stop the audition halfway. They have to at least fulfill the protocol.
Others nodded and the audition continued.
This is hollywood, here everything is done in secrecy, but also open at the same time. An intelligent person can see that both the director and producers are no longer intrested in audition, but of course, no one would mention such a thing face to face.
