After unhooking the phone pressed to my ear, I had discreetly slipped out of the classroom, leaving behind my somewhat perplexed students. I was now heading down the corridor, carefully taking the route away from the main entrance.
"Hmm... For what reason could she possibly be calling me at this precise moment? Is there an urgent issue?" I wondered internally. If it were truly critical, she would have used the walkie-talkie, not this basic phone provided by the institution.
"Regardless, I'll soon find out," I reassured myself. One thing was certain: this call was definitely related to the ongoing mission.
Loid: Hey, Handler. What's the issue?
When I placed the device to my ear, the familiar voice of Sylvia Sherwood resonated on the other side, the commander of the Japan Intelligence Services' Western-Focused Division, or more simply, JISW, the organization under which I operate under the pseudonym "Twilight." And she, she is my superior, known by the codename "Handler" or "Fullmetal Lady."
Regardless of the circumstances, the fact remains that she took the trouble to contact me, most likely to discuss the details of my current missions as a spy.
Handler: Agent Twilight, I'd like to take a moment to speak with you if you allow. Have you had the chance to visit your classroom and meet your students?
Indeed, my suspicions were justified... She's calling to inquire about the progress of the operation I've been assigned, having managed to infiltrate this institution as a teacher for class S... Yes, and I was lucky that the institution decided to create a new class just when I was assigned this mission; things would have been significantly more complicated otherwise.
Loid: Yes, there are particularly interesting and intelligent students; I sense we will have a fruitful year. After a short pause, he continued. However, I presume that wasn't the focus of your question, was it? If you're referring to the target "Tardigrade," then indeed, I have identified them. They stood out due to their more reserved demeanor compared to the other students.
Handler: Perfect, that means our intelligence was accurate. She paused, likely absorbed in her thoughts. They likely represent one of our rare chances to approach Atsuomi and put an end to this situation. It is imperative that you gain their trust, is that understood?
Loid: Indeed, that's the core of Operation Eagle. I have devised an action plan, but it's important to acknowledge that this may take time. Establishing a trustful relationship with the target will likely not be easy.
Indeed, I was personally entrusted with the responsibility of Operation Eagle, targeting Professor Atsuomi Ayanokoji's WR project. His actions are reprehensible and must be stopped immediately. Throughout our extensive investigations, we made a shocking discovery: this despicable individual has a son whom he has, it seems, involved in his project. This young man goes by the name of Ayanokoji Kiyotaka.
I truly feel compassion for this boy, forced to grow up alongside such a father... Nevertheless, it appears he managed to escape that place and the grasp of that man, ultimately landing here at ANHS, in class S where I now serve as the head teacher undercover. Thus, we have designated him under the codename "Tardigrade."
The mission's objective is to get close to Ayanokoji Kiyotaka, earn his trust, and extract vital information. He is likely one of the few who can shed light on the situation... Nevertheless, I sense that gaining his trust will not be a trivial task. Judging by his behavior in class, it's clear that even I cannot decipher his thoughts or feelings; the White Room has deeply affected him, that's certain... Tsk, I'll never understand how a father can inflict such things on his own child.
Handler: And Anya?
Anya? Ah, I understand where she's going; now, she's probably going to ask about Operation Strix.
Loid: Anya? Yes, she's indeed in class D. True, bringing Anya closer to Damian Desmond, who is in class A, poses a certain challenge. Nonetheless, I believe it remains feasible. Anya has matured; she should now have a better understanding of the stakes and act in a way that will advance Operation Strix.
Yes, Operation Strix, in a way, is an extension of Operation Eagle. In fact, it has become that. Originally, Operation Strix aimed to get closer to Damian Desmond in order to reach Donovan Desmond, an influential politician and renowned businessman... He is connected to our ultimate target, Atsuomi Ayanokoji, and thus, in a manner, linked to him. He likely invested in this deplorable project. Thus, with Kiyotaka Ayanokoji, they are the only two identified individuals thus far who can provide us with crucial information about Atsuomi Ayanokoji and his project.
I was assigned to form a fictitious family for my cover and adopt a child; this child was Anya. It's been quite some time, and she has grown a lot; she has become a respectable and lovable teenager... Things should be simpler now. I will take care of gaining Ayanokoji Kiyotaka's trust, while she will have to get closer to Damian Desmond, who is in class A, by any means necessary...
Fortunately, these two have become at least somewhat friends, knowing each other for some time now, so this part of the operation shouldn't pose too many problems. No, the main challenge will probably lie in Operation Eagle.
Handler: Oh, I wasn't referring to Operation Strix, but to that other matter, our other ongoing mission.
Loid: Oh, I see... At present, I don't have much more information, but I predict that it will likely be more straightforward than the previous operation. It is probable that this individual will be more willing to cooperate than the target "Tardigrade."
Ah, alright, she was referring to that other mission... Indeed, our information might still be limited, but based on what I've learned about the intelligence target, executing this task should be significantly easier, without a doubt.
Handler: Very well, I believe that concludes our conversation for today, Agent Twilight. I will contact you from time to time to monitor the progress of the operations. Exercise caution. Goodbye.
Loid: Alright, Handler. Goodbye.
Ultimately, she ended the call, and I stared at my phone for a brief moment before sliding it into my pocket and continuing on my way. It seems the situation is more complex than I had anticipated... Three operations, three missions to conduct concurrently, yes, this indeed promises to be more challenging than usual.
