Chương 31: Apprehending the Suspect
They had changed into normal workout clothes rather than their police uniform. They still had the bulletproof clothing underneath the top they wore making the top look rather bulky, something that Lisa did not hesitate to point out to Draco several times.
"His true form." She called it.
"Quiet," Emily said harshly as she stared outside the door. She had decided to go with them, they were in the police rapid response van and Sarah was driving.
Tariq was in the passenger's seat in front, the remaining five of them were sitting down, facing each other.
Emily was facing Lisa whose head hung low when she was scolded.
"She is a little nervous." Arlen gave an excuse for her as he fixed his gaze on Emily. Don't. He silently warned her.
Emily gritted her teeth and leaned back on the sofa. Closing her eyes in concentration, she focused on her ability. This was a mental exercise and the person who had taught her that the ability core was like a muscle was the one who was sitting right there, pretending that they had never been friends.
She hated him but she could admit that having him next to her brought back fond memories of their teenage years.
The windows were tinted, he could not even look out. Ravi signed and looked at his wristwatch. It was 3:53 p.m. He could tell that the hospital was about seven minutes away. His shift ended by 4 p.m.
"I talked it over with the Chief and we agreed for the paid overtime rate to be increased from 15 dollars to 25 dollars an hour, of course, there is the field allowance for occasions like this."
"Yay!" Lisa raised both hands to celebrate, but before she could add a dancing segment, Emily opened an eye and gave her a look.
"Quiet, I understand," Lisa said quietly but she still raised her thumb to show her approval of the Captain's actions.
Ravi looked at those blue eyes that were looking at him. 25 dollars was like what again; two kilograms of chicken, one kilogram of peeled shrimps, one freshly baked bread, two crates of eggs, and some vegetables. Fine! He put down his watch and held the gun with all matter of seriousness.
He heard a low chuckle from Arlen and he rolled his eyes. Yes, money was one of his biggest motivations, arrest him.
Six minutes later, the van pulled to a stop and Emily stood up in the van.
"We would proceed to arrest the criminal…"
"Suspect." Arlen interrupted her before raising his hand in apology.
"The suspect, Alex Malley, an unregistered mutant with the ability of hypnotism. Put on your glasses and headphones. Prioritize de-escalation and teamwork. Let us execute this operation with precision and remember that our mission is to ensure the safety of the public."
"And we would have hotpot at Dunes. Right, Quiet." Lisa recalled as she sank into the seat.
Emily wanted to scold her when she heard a rumble, it was coming from the stomach of her own teammate, the superhero, Vaporstream. She rubbed her forehead, feeling more drained with each moment that she spent with this police team.
"Officer West and Officer Adams," Emily called and the two responded before separating from the group and running towards the west of the hospital.
Ravi looked up, this was the exact ground facing the window of the waiting Operating room 7b. He moved back, opening the box that Emily had handed to the Captain, who had handed it to him, there were four devices that blinked, emitting a faint hum, he moved to the North and buried it into the ground, he did the same around a 64 meters radius and the devices started to hum faintly, shimmering as a square line was drawn between the four devices, Ravi could see the transparent cube being formed. It was a trap.
The Hero Association really had a lot of combat devices.
He moved towards Sarah and nodded at her that it was done.
"Can you hear them?" Sarah did not move so he repeated the question. She moved her headphones and nodded at him.
Emily had told her to focus on one member of the team as he moved up, to isolate the noise in the hospital, and focus on the team.
"I did not know I could do that. She is amazing. They are arguing with the staff. The nurse said that the operation was very delicate and their presence might disturb the doctors and lead to the death of the patient. She is right, maybe we should have waited. What do you think, Officer West?" She asked.
Ravi shook his head, "I have no thoughts."
Sarah nodded, "So you can be nervous too."
He did not say that but Sarah was in her own world.
"The nurse decided to accompany them. They are entering the elevator. They would be alright, right?"
Ravi held the gun, only he and Sarah had been allowed a gun and they were not allowed to follow them. After Emily heard about their powers, she had relegated Ravi to setting the cage and Sarah to backup duty.
"Lisa and Draco are arguing. So everything is normal."
Bang!
The sound of the windows breaking was so loud to Ravi who was extremely attuned to the environment but it was not the reason he frowned. Four presences were rapidly approaching, one was a little weaker than Arlen, one as strong as Emily and one was even stronger than Tariq, as for the fourth one, Ravi could not gauge it correctly, it should not be a combat ability.
The cold wind blew through the trees as a figure leaped out of the window, the man was tall and thin, and Ravi recognized the figure clearly. It was Alex Malley.
"They are still in the elevator." Sarah muttered as she trained her gun on the man who was falling straight into the trap, "How many minutes can the cage hold him?"
"Ten minutes."
The man was surprised as he felt the suction pull him down to the ground. He fell flat on the ground and struggled to get up.
Sarah fixed her headphones properly and closed her eyes before she cleared her throat, "Mr. Alex you are under arrest for the malicious use of mutant ability on an ordinary human, You have the right to remain silent as anything you say would be used against you in the court of law."
"The court of law can kiss my a**" A booming voice sounded and Ravi touched a stone in his pocket, transforming it into a whip before he pulled Sarah away.
A second later, the transparent cage gained form and instantly shattered into a million pieces.
