Chương 33: Flashback

Everything was burning. People were running and trying to save themselves. Their screams were buried under the sounds of burning houses. A little boy sat beside a burning house and he was crying. No one heard his voice. No one came to take him. No one even saw him sitting there.

The boy kept staring at a burning dead body. It seemed like it was his mother. He didn't have the courage to go and look at her if she's alive. She was already dead but the boy didn't know about it. He screamed out loud for help. His screaming wasn't strong enough. His face was telling of the starvation and weakness in his body. Not only that he was having a fever after crying for so long. Even in the middle of the burning houses he stood shivering like he's on an ice cube.

A guy saw him standing there and came towards him to help him. But suddenly something flew right through that man's throat and he fell down. That kid covered his mouth and hid himself. He realized that that guy was dead. Someone came there and checked that guy if he's alive. The boy waited and watched who that guy was. Suddenly a lightning flashed and the boy saw it's the priest in the nearest church. That man has always been nice to the boy so the boy came out of the shadows and called him.

At first the priest didn't hear the boy. But then he heard and saw where the boy was. He walked towards the boy and looked at him. He said through the wireless,

"I have found the kid."

Suddenly the boy realized that man was no savior. He understood that this guy is one of the ones who burned this place. That boy looked into the eyes of the priest. The boy saw his own death in the man's eyes. He extended his arms to capture the boy.

But suddenly something happened. A sharp piece of a plank came flying and it stabbed through the priest's chest. Within seconds he died. The boy was scared. He even forgot to scream. He opened his mouth to scream but nothing came out. He was so scared and sick.

Suddenly the boy saw movement in the shadows. Within seconds he realized it's a man. That man covered his whole body in black clothes. The man came near him and asked,

"Are you alright kid?"

He didn't reply. He felt this newcomer might kill him too. But somehow he felt that the sound was familiar. He also understands it's not a man but just a boy like himself.

The newcomer said,

"Look kid, don't worry I'm not an enemy we can not stay here. We need to move. My name is Phoenix"

Phoenix, the boy knows the name. He is the hero of the town. So many times Phoenix saved the town from various problems. The boy gave him his hand and looked back at his mother again. A drop of tear fell from his eyes. Then the boy ran away with him. They reached a safe place and sat there hidden.

Phoenix confirmed that the area is safe and then he started checking the boy, if he had any injury. That time he said,

"I… I'm okay. But my… mom…"

He started crying. Phoenix tried to comfort him. Phoenix said,

"There is no use in crying. All we can do now is to take care of ourselves. We were too careless. To believe those traitors and let our guard down like that. I don't even think there is anyone besides ourselves who survived this."

The boy became more sensitive and started crying out loud. Phoenix suddenly closed his mouth and looked around if anyone heard him. Phoenix showed him not to talk. He asked,

"What is your name kid?"

The boy wiped his eyes and said,

"Scarmerine."

When he said his name Phoenix heard another screaming. He told Scarmerine to stay silent. Then he ran towards the sound. Scarmerine tried to stop him in fear but Phoenix was already gone. Scarmerine sat down under a fallen metal bar and kept his eyes wide open for the enemy.

Phoenix moved through the shadows. He saw another guy moving in the shadows just like him. He threw a shuriken at that guy and killed him. Within seconds Phoenix reached the place where the screaming came from. He saw a girl fall on the ground and try to escape from some guys who's trying to molest her while all this was happening. Phoenix realized those guys are the ones who are destroying this town.

There were a total of five guys. They were slowly walking towards the girl on the ground. One of the guys sat near her and tried to grab her. But before he could reach her a shuriken passed right through his neck. The guy started coughing and he spit blood. He fell down on the ground. The others became shocked and they pulled out their guns and started pointing at all around them.

Another shuriken came flying and killed one more guy. The other three ran and hid behind a wall. Phoenix came near them and started fighting them. The first thing Phoenix did was to remove their guns. After that he fought and defeated them easily.

The guys fell down. Phoenix made sure that they were dead. To the undead people he used his small knife and finished them off. After that he walked towards the girl. She was so scared so he showed her his face. That time the girl's expression changed. Her face widened like she saw a familiar face. She came running and hugged him. She said,

"Phee, Vina is still alive. I ran as a decoy to distract one man but on the way the others joined him. If you hadn't come along, I should have been…"

Her name is mina. She's the older sister of vina. She started crying. But she suddenly stopped crying and got up. She took him along with her to where Vina was. They started walking. On the way they saw some guy walking there. They were armed and Phoenix avoided them.

Phoenix took another way to get to the place Mina said. They reached there and found Vina lying there unconscious under a trash can. Phoenix checked on her and realized she's just tired. He picked her up and slowly walked into the shadows. Mina followed him without making any noise.

They went towards Scarmerine. On the way they saw another team of people who were searching for survivors. Phoenix waited to see if they were enemies or allies. He hid himself behind a tree and Mina also stood behind him. Vina slowly opened her eyes and she saw Phoenix holding her. He covered his face with the black clothes so she didn't recognise him.

She became scared and started crying. Suddenly Mina closed her mouth. Seeing Mina, Vina calmed down. But that crying was enough for the people to hear them. They came towards them and Phoenix understood they were the enemy. He put Vina down and said,

"Here we go again. Vina my dear, please close your eyes till big bro take care of things with them."

Vina didn't understand who he was. She looked at Mina. Phoenix walked towards the guys who came to them. Mina smiled and told Vina,

"That is big brother Phoenix."

Vina's face became wider in happiness. She looked at him. Then she remembered what he told and she closed her eyes.

Phoenix fought them. He didn't use any weapons this time. He just fought them in hand to hand combat. Even in the burning sound those people's screaming echoed. Mina was watching Everything. Vina peeked and looked at what big brother was doing. She saw him putting a hole in a man's chest with bare hand. Phoenix noticed that she's peeking and he turned around to hide that guy from her. He said,

"No peeking my dear."

Vina became scared of seeing that and when he told that she closed her eyes tightly. Phoenix finished them off quickly. Then he came near Vina. He asked,

"Are you still afraid of me dear?"

Vina opened her eyes and looked at him. She quickly ran towards him and hugged him. He picked her up and walked towards Mina. He held Mina's hands and walked towards the place where he left Scarmerine.

They reached the place and Scarmerine came running. He said,

"I saw a guy. He just left this place. They are searching everywhere. I'm scared."

Phoenix looked at him. Then he looked at them all. He said,

"Look. I'm going to distract them all. That time I want you all to run as fast as you can. Mina is the oldest one so you two should listen to her. And promise me one thing. You never leave any of you behind. Stay together, stay safe."

Scarmerine holded Phoenix's hand and said,

"I'm scared. Please don't go."

Phoenix put his hand on scarmerine's head and said,

"Don't worry dear. I'll be right behind you."

Vina came to Scarmerine and picked up his hand. She told him that she will protect him. Her cute face was so serious when she said that. Scarmerine blushed while she holded his hands. Mina came to Phoenix and whispered,

"Phee you shouldn't go. Your staying with us is safer for you and us. I'm also worried. But think about the kid. He only knows you."

Phoenix smiled and said,

"Don't worry about me. I'll be just fine. I'm promising you that I'll be right behind you. And don't worry about Scarmerine too. He's scared that's the truth. But he's not scared for himself. He's scared that if he uses his powers he might lose control and kill everyone. It's not fear, it's kindness."
