Chương 122: Tutelage

*Lucy POV*

I spent a lot of time on that platform on the first floor, going through the spell book and doing my best to learn the basic spells.

The incantations of the spell book were great, naturally I couldn't fight with a spell book, so I had to replicate its effects to the best of my ability.

One problem with the incantations... I couldn't fucking read them.

They were written in an almost runic language and while the translation provided a guide to their pronunciation, it was still pretty difficult.

<<"Force.">>

Fortunately, I had someone who could help with that.

The worn phantasmal hand cast by Ajax pressed down on the poor water bottle we'd been using as target practice.

Crushing the bottle before quickly losing control of the spell, I tried to pronounce it like he had.

<<"Force!">> *CRRK*

A glowing white gloved hand appeared above the bottle before slamming down unto it, utterly obliterating it and much of the tile underneath.

"Yes! I did it!" I yelled in excitement at mastering three of the four basic spells in the spell book using incantations.

All that was left was to learn the last one and recreate its effect using just mana.

Shifting to the next page excitedly, I moved the book towards Ajax who'd been patiently helping me with the incantations for some time now.

"..?"

Sitting beside me, his head resting on the wall behind us, Ajax had fallen asleep which only an idiot would fail to notice.

Being so immersed in the spell book I failed to notice the sudden shift in his appearance, the form of the new urban legend, 'The Angel'.

I guess I would have been more surprised if Ajax actually tried to hide it. Knowing he was a young mercenary matching the abilities of the angel made it rather easy.

More importantly I couldn't help but feel like an absolutely terrible person.

So caught up in learning the spells, I forgot that this would take a heavy toll on the already tired Ajax.

Even then he'd been pretty patient, not complaining even once despite the signs of fatigue being rather obvious.

Going from standing, to sitting and finally leaning on the wall as he spoke the incantations with less and less energy.

Though he looked oddly peaceful while sleeping, despite the intimidating appearance.

Wait no! This is my fault; I can't just leave him here!

Summoning a phantasmal hand to nudge him gently, he slowly opened his eyes which were akin to precious gems.

...I'm going to pretend I didn't have those thoughts just now.

"...sorry. We were on the last incantation?"

With a simple motion, the angelic features were gone as he attempted to shake off his drowsiness.

"No. It's enough for now, I should focus on mastering the first three. I'm sorry for making you do all this."

"I agreed to it, so there's no reason to apologize."

Doing so he tried to read the last incantation of the spell book but using phantasmal magic, I closed it before he could and pulled it towards me.

Inwardly I was very pleased with what I'd just done but tried my best to hide it.

"Let's head back for now. If I need help with the last incantation, I'll let you know."

Storing the spell book away, I helped Ajax get to his feet as I felt excitement at what would come next.

The last spell was simply called "Multiply" and focused on the creation of more than one phantasmal apparition.

The basic spells basically just gave one a basic idea of how to manipulate the created apparition.

I wanted to try it on golems or even other students, should I apply to the combat school now? Hopefully I didn't have to-

"Lucy."

Ajax broke me out of the spiral once more as I looked up to see dawn break in the sky.

I'd walked a bit of a distance away from the portal and Ajax had stopped me as I was about to run directly into a telephone pole.

"Sorry, I spaced out for a bit."

Hiding my embarrassment, I checked the time on my phone, it was almost 6 AM.

"Well, there goes my perfect attendance in the artificing classes."

I said with a sigh but also a bit of joy.

"Do you hate artificing that much?" Ajax asked with a smile.

In his fatigue his stoic mask seemed to slip ever so slightly, I wasn't sure I could handle the vision of him smiling so easily.

"It's not that I hate any of them in particular. I actually like alchemy, but I knew I didn't want to do it over being a hero."

Explaining it now I still wasn't sure if the 'Phantasmal' next to my attribute would be enough to get me into the combat mage classes.

"Although I doubt it'll be easy to change degrees that easily."

My body shivered in anticipation at the copious amount of paperwork I'd have to sign and the tests I'd have to take.

"It should be fine. A new attribute of magic is a big deal after all." He replied.

"Technically, a very old attribute of magic. Same thing to everyone except Merlin."

"Are you sure you want to be insulting him now?" He asked warily.

Oh fuck, I forgot this means I have to spend my time in Merlin's magic tower like the rest of the poor souls in the combat mage degree.

"It'll be fine. Besides it'll be interesting to see if he actually does recognize the magic."

From all I've heard it's near impossible to get guidance from the old man... but what if he sees a long-lost form of magic?

"Let me know how it goes." Ajax said, a thin note of worry in his voice.

"..."

For a moment there was flustered silence, which I blame entirely on him.

He was too damn unaware of the power he held!

As he tilted his head in confusion, I knew I had to say something.

"O-of course! Who else will I force to help me with the incantations?"

As always, if you're ever in doubt.

Just say something stupid that you'll regret for the rest of your life.
