Dong Jun didn't fully believe it. He chuckled and turned to Xu Xiuwen, "Xiuwen, be honest, did you go to Jiaotong University to see Cheng Lu this afternoon?"
Xu Xiuwen noticed his roommates and some girls were looking this way.
If he didn't answer well, it would be hard to explain if it got back to Tang Weiwei.
But before he could speak, Cheng Lu helped him out, or perhaps not really.
Cheng Lu said, "Someone as timid as him wouldn't dare come to Jiaotong University to find me."
Xu Xiuwen could tell Cheng Lu was mocking him for not daring to speak up before.
The others in the room burst into laughter.
Only Xu Xiuwen found it hard to explain.
Over thirty people drank until past eight in the evening before the gathering dispersed.
Xu Xiuwen estimated that tonight's meal wasn't cheap.
But since Dong Jun was the one treating and he didn't mind the cost, nobody else said anything.
When they left the restaurant, everyone went their separate ways.
The few people from 412 were eager to return to their dorm.
Xu Xiuwen let his roommates go ahead while he found an excuse to use the restroom and lingered for a bit.
When he came out, most people had already left.
Worried that Cheng Lu had also left, he quickly looked around for her but couldn't find her after searching for a long time.
Suddenly, a voice behind him said, "What are you looking for? I'm right here."
Xu Xiuwen turned and saw Cheng Lu standing quietly under a big tree by the roadside.
The evening breeze blew, lifting her long hair. She had to use her hand to tuck the strands of hair blowing across her face, her beautiful face partly obscured, making it hard to look away.
Xu Xiuwen walked quickly towards her and said, "Shall we walk along the road for a while?"
Cheng Lu rolled her eyes at him and asked, "You have the guts to talk after drinking?"
Xu Xiuwen smiled faintly without explaining.
The two of them walked east along the road.
By now it was January, and the weather in Jinling could turn cold suddenly.
The evening wind made them shiver.
It wasn't a pleasant feeling.
But Cheng Lu said nothing, quietly walking with Xu Xiuwen.
Neither of them spoke.
Xu Xiuwen glanced at Cheng Lu out of the corner of his eye.
Her smooth long hair was tousled by the wind. She stood tall and straight at 1.7 meters, with an excellent demeanor.
Cheng Lu suddenly seemed to notice and glanced back at him.
Their eyes met.
Cheng Lu laughed, "Silly, why sneak a peek? Who's stopping you from looking openly?"
Xu Xiuwen said nothing.
Cheng Lu knew she looked good because she had carefully chosen her outfit, so how could she not look good?
She asked on purpose, "Do you still think I look like an old hag?"
Xu Xiuwen was puzzled for a moment but then remembered the first time they were late for morning exercises. Yang Baishan had insulted her behind her back, calling her that, and she had unfortunately overheard.
Xu Xiuwen cursed Yang Baishan inwardly for causing trouble.
He pretended not to know, "What old hag?"
Cheng Lu saw through his act but didn't bother arguing.
Since the morning exercise card incident was mentioned, Xu Xiuwen took the opportunity to ask, "Since you knew me, even when I spoke nicely, you didn't want to return our morning exercise card. Were you really planning to turn it in?"
Cheng Lu calmly explained, "I didn't intend to take the card. I asked Yang Baishan why he was helping others stamp it. He was so guilty he couldn't speak clearly, making it look like he was knowingly breaking the rules. So of course, I wouldn't return it to him."
She paused, glancing at Xu Xiuwen, "As for you, who told you to get so drunk? Don't drink so much in the future, got it?"
Xu Xiuwen felt a surge of joy, Cheng Lu's tone was like that of a girlfriend.
Could it be that she liked him back then?
Xu Xiuwen immediately asked, "Why do you care if I'm drunk? Did you like me back then?"
Cheng Lu rolled her eyes, "Stop flattering yourself. I just don't like people getting dead drunk. How embarrassing were you the other night?"
That night before the morning exercise was after the school's evening party.
Xu Xiuwen had always thought Cheng Lu didn't attend that gathering. Hearing her now, he realized she had been there.
Xu Xiuwen chuckled.
Hearing his laugh, Cheng Lu glared at him, "Can you do anything besides laugh foolishly?"
"Heh heh..."
They walked along the road for a while, reaching an intersection just as the light turned red. They waited for the green light.
Xu Xiuwen focused on the traffic light.
Cheng Lu suddenly asked quietly, "This afternoon..."
She paused, "What did you want to say?"
Hearing her, Xu Xiuwen blushed, his heart racing.
He felt like his heart was about to leap out of his chest.
Xu Xiuwen said nothing, staring at the traffic light, making up his mind: when the light turns green, he will act!
The red light counted down.
10...9...8...7...6...5...4...3...
As time ticked away and the green light was about to shine, Xu Xiuwen steeled himself and grabbed her hand hanging by her side.
Cheng Lu's hand lightly resisted but then settled quietly in his palm.
Feeling her hand calm down, Xu Xiuwen was overjoyed, almost wanting to shout out loud.
After the excitement, Xu Xiuwen had a moment of daze.
He held Cheng Lu's hand as they slowly walked across the crosswalk.
After crossing, Cheng Lu suddenly said, "Silly, can you let go of my hand? You can hold it again later."
Hearing her, Xu Xiuwen came back to his senses.
Looking down, he saw Cheng Lu's fair hand had been squeezed red by him, and his own hand was sweaty.
Xu Xiuwen immediately let go and smiled apologetically at her.
Cheng Lu didn't say anything. She took out a tissue from her crossbody bag, grabbed his hand, and wiped his palm sweat.
Xu Xiuwen stared at her beautiful face, a bit dazed.
After wiping his hand, Cheng Lu wiped her own, folded the tissue, and put it back in her bag.
Then she took Xu Xiuwen's arm and walked with him.
Xu Xiuwen's awareness returned to his body, realizing their intimate posture, smiling happily.
Cheng Lu's gesture had answered him.
Some things don't need to be said, silence speaks louder than words.
It felt like a dream, but the warmth in his arm told him it was real.
Xu Xiuwen couldn't help but smile.
January 2, 2006.
On this winter night,
Xu Xiuwen and Cheng Lu walked back and forth many times on the north street between Jiaotong University and Jiangling.
The next day, Xu Xiuwen ran to Jiaotong University right after his morning class, pulling Cheng Lu to the little garden behind the Humanities Building.
They seemed to have endless things to talk about.
Two days passed in a flash.
That evening, Xu Xiuwen and Cheng Lu walked the north street.
They walked back and forth many times, until it was almost time for the dorm to close.
After sending Cheng Lu back to Jiaotong University, walking through a quieter path, Cheng Lu suddenly turned to him and said, "Close your eyes."
Xu Xiuwen was puzzled, "Why?"
"Just close your eyes," Cheng Lu urged.
Cheng Lu wouldn't harm him, so Xu Xiuwen obediently closed his eyes.
As soon as he did, Cheng Lu's lips met his.
Xu Xiuwen instantly tensed, his back straight, his whole body stiffening!
