Chương 15: The Stone Sentinels Menhir

"These unsightly fiends are furious, run for it!" Grayson yelled as a barrage of chained balls whizzed towards them from above. The four of them dashed with urgency, and the raining iron spheres behind them shattered everything they struck.

The enraged goblins on the slope, seeing their prey escape their range, refused to give up. They leapt down, picking up their chained balls and resumed their pursuit, the sound of the iron balls thundering against the ground echoing behind the fleeing group.

In her haste, Katheren slipped and crashed to the ground. She scrambled to her feet, only to hear the terrifying whistle of a chained ball speeding towards her from behind. As she braced for impact, a figure darted to her side, yanking her back and deftly kicking away the plummeting sphere.

Grayson took advantage of the moment to snatch Katheren's silver pistol from her waist and fired back, obliterating the brains of the goblin who had thrown the ball, causing it to tumble lifelessly to the ground.

"Keep moving, don't stop!" Grayson gritted his teeth and pulled the trembling Katheren back, shooting dead another goblin poised to attack.

"When you're cornered, the best defense is offense. Never wait passively for the end!"

As he spoke, Grayson's pistol fired eight rapid shots. Each found its mark, and the goblins fell in succession. Handing back Katheren her pistol, Grayson moved forward between his companions.

Morven and Seraphine, supporting Katheren, made haste to catch up. The goblins, having been repelled, hesitated to advance again. By the time they mustered the courage to resume their pursuit, the quartet was already out of sight.

With the goblins at bay, the four of them slowed their pace, catching their breath. Grayson continued to lead, scanning the cliffsides. They were now descending into a valley, the path underfoot leading further down into the lowlands. The cliffs were not steep, but neither were they easily scalable.

"We might have lost her," Grayson admitted to Morven. "There was another path next to the one we took; Alyssia must have taken it – otherwise, there would be footprints."

Morven cast a glance at the trail before them, noting the lack of prints. He turned to Grayson, "What's the plan? Should we go back?"

"That's not a good idea. We could face another goblin onslaught, and I'd rather not get hit by another of those flying iron balls and have my head smashed in!" Grayson replied, shaking his head.

He pointed down the path, "This road isn't straight; it seems to be winding west. The road Alyssia took also seemed to stretch westward. We might just run into her."

Agreeing with Grayson's plan, Morven relayed the decision to Seraphine and Katheren who were trailing behind. Both women were reluctant to face the goblins again and quickly agreed to Grayson's plan. They quickened their pace along the winding valley path, hoping to encounter Alyssia around the next bend.

After rounding a large curve, they came upon an open stretch of land adorned with a circle of massive stones, each about four to five meters tall. Inside each megalith stood a stone figure, each in a different pose, resembling armored soldiers.

"What are these?" All four were taken aback by the sight. Morven surveyed the megaliths and the statues, suggesting, "They look like relics from an ancient kingdom."

"Could they be remnants of the Kingdom of Atlantis?" Grayson asked, turning to Seraphine. The mermaid guardian nodded affirmatively, "You're right, it's very possible. Ice Island was once part of the Atlantean territory. These could indeed be vestiges of the ancient kingdom!"

"Atlantis? I've heard it vanished two centuries ago. If these indeed are its remains, I'd like to examine them further!"

Stirred by the conversation, the adventurer eagerly approached one of the stones. Grayson and the others followed Morven, watching him stop before a megalith and reach towards a carved, unknown symbol on its surface.

The moment Morven's fingers touched the symbol, the earth shook violently. Everyone stepped back in alarm, only to see the megaliths descend into the ground with deafening rumblings. When they rose again, they had formed a five-meter-high wall around the group.

"It seems we've triggered a trap!" Grayson commented, raising an eyebrow at the astonished Morven.

Suddenly, the distinct crack of stone breaking echoed around them. The group's attention turned to the statues, which began to move.

These stone soldiers, composed entirely of rock, converged on the circle's center, turning their chiseled faces towards the group. Their helmeted eyes glinted with black light, and their clenched iron fists portended ill.

"I've seen these beings before…" Morven spoke, slowly reaching for his curved saber, "These are golems, magic-infused stone warriors with bodies of pure rock, often used for area defense."

"If I'm not mistaken, they won't leave until they've finished us off," Grayson said nonchalantly.

He lit a cigar, drew his silver longsword, and surveyed the advancing stone figures, "Eighteen of them, and we're five—a bit uneven, don't you think?"

"Five of us?" Morven seemed puzzled by Grayson's count, and before he could comprehend the fifth member, Grayson had already launched himself at the golems.

As Grayson approached, the stone soldiers' hands turned into stone swords and shields under a brown glow. As their marble swords clashed against Grayson's blade, a severe vibration shot through his hand. With a shout, he pushed back the golem's sword and shattered its head.

Seven more golems attacked from all sides, while the rest bypassed Grayson aiming for Morven, Seraphine, and Katheren. The golems charged with speed rivaling humans, swinging their stone swords at Morven's head.

Morven dodged nimbly, his saber slicing through the air, striking one golem and sending chunks of its rocky body flying.

Yet the golem was hardly fazed. It swung its stone shield towards Morven, who leapt back. Suddenly, another golem charged, using its shield as defense and thrusting its sword towards Morven.

Caught off guard and unable to dodge, Morven was forced to block with his saber. The golem deftly maneuvered its blade along the saber's edge and aimed for Morven's stomach.

In the blink of an eye, a gunshot sounded. A silver bullet struck the golem's neck with pinpoint accuracy. The projectile's explosive force obliterated the golem's neck, its head detaching and body collapsing.

Morven, drenched in cold sweat, gratefully glanced back at Katheren, who was still shaking but showed an intense resolve. The words Grayson had uttered while saving her echoed in her mind, and she pulled the trigger once more.

With another shot, a second golem fell. As Katheren prepared to fire again, the remaining golems halted their attack and vanished in a flurry of brown light.

The group in the stone circle looked around in bewilderment. Before they could understand what had happened, the symbols carved into the megaliths' surfaces began to glow, casting eighteen brilliant beams of light that converged on them.
