Chương 123: Chapter 122

They entered through the gates in a group of five: Dio, Constantine, John, Boston, and Andrew.

They walked slowly along the ground-level stone path, which was the only place where the wild plants that had grown out of control for years had not sprouted.

Once they reached the halfway point, Boston floated above us moved ahead, and passed through the wall on the first floor.

He would analyze the situation and try to take control of an enemy while turning the odds in their favor if necessary.

"I smell magic here."

Constantine said this beside Dio.

"I don't smell anything."

Dio said quietly after concentrating for a moment.

"It's a very subtle and old smell."

Constantine continued.

"We asked a witch to put some protection spells around the house since we wanted to stay here for some time."

Andrew explained.

"Will that be a problem?"

Dio asked Constantine.

Constantine bent down while plucking a small plant from the ground and smelled it.

"No, protection spells should be strengthened from time to time. The ones placed here clearly haven't been, but everything should be fine as long as she doesn't have a magician on her side."

"Does she?"

Dio asked Andrew now.

"Not that I know of, but we haven't been talking for many years."

"Great."

They continued their slow path until they reached the entrance of the house.

A 1960s-style wooden entrance with space for a swing and a few chairs.

However, the house is in terrible shape. The wood is as dark as coal, and everyone can smell that musty mold smell.

It has several holes, and half of its roof is gone.

"Who's going to knock?"

Constantine asked.

"I'll go first."

John volunteered.

John had left his military backpack, which he always carries with him, at the entrance.

John had already taken a machete and a wooden stake from the tree and is now holding one in each hand.

They all stayed alert as he walked slowly to the door falling apart.

John stepped in front of it and pushed it while moving his body to the side.

This showed that he was trained and experienced in this kind of situation.

The door was wide open and making a loud creak. It let us see a small corridor that had to lead to the living room. The place is well-lit.

Andrew took the lead while entering the house next to John, and they followed shortly after.

The inside of the house is in better condition than the outside. The lights on the ceiling have been fixed, and the floor is more solid.

"Mary."

Andrew said this in front of them.

When they turned left into the small hallway that led to the living room, they saw Mary sitting in an armchair in the middle of the room with a glass of blood in her hands.

She was wearing a long red dress that matched the color of the blood in her glass and on her lips.

"You're late, my love."

Mary greeted.

Dio touched his communicator on his ear while sending a signal to the other team that they'd found the target, and then ignored her for a few seconds.

He knew very well that they'd have a short conversation as usual before the fight and the trap would be revealed.

So Dio looked around while searching for every detail that might help him figure out how her trap would play out.

The room is empty except for the fireplace and armchair, which were removed long ago; the floor is also dusty.

The upstairs staircase is behind Mary.

There are no more heartbeats in the place, but they're not alone; a queen doesn't walk around without her protection.

They could come from below or from above.

Boston is up there, so they're a bit safer.

"What are you trying to achieve here, Mary?"

Andrew was well aware of the trap here and approached her slowly.

"I've told you many times what my goal is, Andrew. You're just too stupid to understand."

"I understand your distorted vision of a perfect future, but what I don't understand is why you're doing all this just to kill me."

"Who knows, perhaps it's because I despise the fact that you're not by my side, where you belong?"

"Hmm!"

John whispered.

"Look who it is, little John Troughton, you've aged."

After drawing attention to him, Mary also seems to have noticed.

"It sucks to age, but it's much better than being like you."

John said it with disgust.

"Being like me? Beautiful, powerful, and forever young. Some of you humans always come up with stupid reasons why you don't want to be immortal, but most of you beg for it when it's offered."

Mary was not offended by his disgusted look. Instead, she seems to find it amusing.

"Are you done?"

Constantine asked while lighting a cigarette with his finger.

Constantine only did this because he hated not being the center of attention.

"John Constantine, the magician of England."

"That's me."

"There's a big reward on your head, a reward I'll collect shortly."

"Sweetheart, many have tried, but few returned alive after failing."

Constantine joked.

"I'll be the first to succeed, then."

Mary stood up; her long dress clung to her skin and disappeared.

She transforms into a white figure with red lines on her body, long red hair, bright eyes, and pointed ears—the same combat form she used in the subway.

"CRAAACK

She threw away the glass that was in her hand, which shattered just above the fireplace.

"Are you ready for this, my love?"

Mary asked.

"You'll lose, Mary. There are few people here who are as strong as you or me, and everyone wants your head."

Andrew warned her.

Mary then looked at Dio.

"Yes, powerful. I've been wondering how powerful a vampire demigod would be. Maybe we should find out."

Dio's response was simple; he just drew his sword from behind him.

"As for your other friends, both those outside and those on the other side of the city, don't worry; they're quite busy at the moment."

This can't be right.

While Dio may not be able to hear the vampires, he would definitely hear a fight or a battle if a war had started.

Then Dio realized something and looked at the closed door behind them.

"You finally noticed?"

Mary asked with great joy in her voice.

Dio was not hearing group one, nor was he hearing the wind or anything outside.

"You isolated the house, how?"

Dio asked her in surprise.

"Magic!"

Constantine was the one who answered.

"Terrible idea, Mary, locking us in here with you."

"Is it really a terrible idea, John?"

Mary asked with the same cheerful tone.

The walls got dark, like a shadow that appeared out of nowhere, and red eyes started to appear.
