The weather was simply splendid. The clear blue sky, misty gray the day before, today seemed to be washed by a washerwoman. A light breeze blew so gently that it seemed as if today's only task was light kisses, announcing the love of nature for man. The sun shone unusually brightly and would have pleased anyone who dared to go out into the air that day. Birds twitted to each other, telling each other the latest news of their bird world. Almost every tree was perched by some magnificent bird, chirping loudly so that the whole neighborhood would know about it and sigh for its ideal beauty.
Heonui smiled weakly. Her gloomy attire created an ominous contrast with the surrounding bright colours of the day, all inside announcing her happiness. She seemed to come into the grove like a cloud announcing an imminent hurricane.
Wang Han walked beside her in silence, holding her by the arm. They had been walking like this for quite some time, but neither of them dared to break the silence. Heonui wanted to say a lot, but did not dare. Wang Han, on the other hand, dreamed of conveying many words of comfort to her, but his mouth seemed to be tied with an invisible rope, depriving him of the ability to speak. He grumbled, he despaired, he got angry... but he couldn't utter a word. Heonui was finally the first to break the silence of their lunchtime walk with the words:
"I upset you, Your Royal Highness."
Wang Han stopped and looked at her.
"Why do you mean so?"
"I should have been your wife, I know so. I could not. But in front of your eyes, I married Wang Tae. I rejoiced and loved, breaking your heart hourly. And now, with my suffering, I have plunged your whole world into melancholy."
"Do not say that, Heonui. I may have been a bad brother, the rumour is true — he really angered me tremendously with his exploits, but I, too, deeply experienced the loss of Wang Tae. I was ready to forgive him. That is why I arrived at your feast instead of going on my trip. I wanted him to be happy. You were a noble influence on him. I even stopped seeing his crazy antics as soon as you came into his life. I gave birth to the hope that my brother came to his senses completely, and no longer hears voices and sees no more ghosts with which he frightened the whole world and shamed my reign. I grieve endlessly that he is not around. You do not upset me, Heonui. I still—"
He paused and turned to continue walking. Heonui followed him and took him by the arm herself.
"I cannot rejoice never more..." she whispered with anguish in her voice.
"Mourn for as long as it takes. I shall be with you in it," replied Wang Han, not looking at her.
"Shhh…" the leaves of the garden trees rustled. "Shhh..."
Heonui shivered nervously. She had heard that mysterious rustle before, and goosebumps ran through her skin. She clung to Wang Han. He, slightly nervous, nevertheless chose not to move away from her so as not to offend.
"Shhh!" the trees rustled louder and louder. "Shhh!"
"I, too, seem to be going insane," Heonui admitted in horror, stumbling on the stones of the path in excitement. "I see ghosts and hear voices."
"Oh, please, Heonui!" Wang Han shook his head. "You speak so because of all the sad events, I believe. There are no ghosts. And the voices, too, seem to mourn. It will pass." He smiled. "It is like I am talking to Wang Tae himself right now. I repeated these phrases to him a thousand times — there are no ghosts. Voices are just noises and rustles. You resurrect him for me."
Heonui smiled sincerely. She felt so pleased with Wang Han's words.
"I want him to never disappear from my memory. I want him to live forever in my heart. So that I speak his words, see his face and not let him forget.
Wang Han nodded.
At that moment, the wind, as if imputing the former benevolent mood, changed abruptly and blew, it would seem, in all directions at once. Heonui and Wang Han looked around. The branches of the trees swayed, the birds rose into the sky in anxiety and, huddled together, hurried out of sight. The grove at the estate changed and trembled.
"What is happening?" Heonui worried, grabbing Wang Han's hand.
"I think rain is coming," he shrugged his shoulders. "We better get back. Let's go."
"Shhh…" the leaves of the garden trees rustled. "Henonuiiii…"
