"Oh?"
H'el found Gin Ichimaru's decision to graduate somewhat strange.
This wasn't like the original plot where Rangiku's soul was damaged by Aizen, leaving her unable to achieve Bankai. As a result, Gin's hatred for Aizen was profound, and he sought to kill Aizen and restore Rangiku's lost soul.
With H'el's interference, Rangiku's condition was restored to normal, so there was no need for Gin to graduate early.
Moreover, even if Gin were exceptionally talented and had mastered everything taught at the Academy, there were still many advanced techniques and intricate knowledge beyond the Academy's teachings. These would take an entire lifetime to master. Therefore, it seemed unnecessary for Gin to leave the Academy prematurely.
"We've only been at the Academy for about half a year. You and Rukia have only enjoyed half a year of safety and peace. Why do you want to leave already?" H'el asked, flipping through the pages of an ancient book. The sunlight casting a subtle glow on him made his outline shimmer.
H'el had thought he had altered Gin's future, but it seemed Gin was still intent on leaving the Academy within a year, as if returning to the original trajectory.
H'el did not believe that any changes could alter Gin's destiny back to its original path. Since the moment he arrived in this world, everyone's actions and mindsets had shifted with his presence.
Rangiku was affected, as was Gin, and even Aizen.
The world never fixed everyone's mindset and actions in place, not even with futures shown in movies, comics, or novels. H'el's arrival was not a mere drop in the ocean causing ripples but a tornado overturning the sea.
Gin Ichimaru's decision to pursue a path different from H'el's seemed odd to H'el.
"All that can be learned at the Academy has been covered by us. What you teach is indeed profound and worth a lifetime of study, but I'm not in a rush to pursue it. It's not something that can be grasped easily.
I'm different from you; I should see the world outside now."
Gin Ichimaru smiled as he spoke.
If he had to chase H'el's footsteps, it would only mean seeing H'el's back growing more distant, with no way to catch up. Gin had his own goals and couldn't spend his days forever under H'el's protection.
H'el had helped him a lot, and Gin wanted to do something in return.
"Indeed, everyone has their own path," H'el remarked with a sense of nostalgia, as if watching a child grow up and develop their own ideas. He looked away from the ancient book in his hands and asked,
"Which division are you planning to join?"
H'el asked.
Typically, graduates of the Academy apply to join the Gotei 13, which offers a promising career path. It's akin to securing a government job—formal and prestigious.
Staying in the Soul Society is usually the best option.
If there are no divisions to join, some nobles might recruit recent graduates for roles like bodyguards. However, nobles generally have their own training channels for warriors and have to pay these recruits, so they often avoid hiring graduates unless they are exceptionally capable and eager for promotion.
For example, Gin and H'el are highly sought-after candidates for noble families, but with such talent, they don't need to depend on the favor of the nobles.
The Academy was established by Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto, the captain-commander of the Gotei 13, to break the nobility's monopoly on the Soul Society and offer hope to promising individuals from ordinary backgrounds.
Although nobles can attend the Academy, their influence is limited. They might receive some preferential treatment, but it's not significant.
If one can't join the Gotei 13 or get into a noble family, they might choose roles such as administrative officers—handling duties like taxation, grassroots maintenance, or managing Rukongai. However, these positions are often filled by relatives of nobles and are not easy to obtain.
Alternatively, one might become a support role similar to auxiliary police. These roles aren't part of the official Gotei 13 divisions but are allocated to assist Shinigami in missions and handle logistical matters. They offer a position that is safer but comes with two ranks below that of a formal Shinigami.
The most dangerous role is being assigned to an expeditionary team. These teams enter Hueco Mundo to face Hollows, constantly facing life-threatening situations. For new graduates who are still hopeful about the future, being sent to an expeditionary team is quite harsh.
Historically, the death rate among graduates in expeditionary teams is the highest. Facing the harsh environment of Hueco Mundo and powerful Hollows, graduates often become paralyzed with fear, making it difficult to apply their training, resulting in many being devoured by Hollows.
"Fifth Division," Gin said.
"Hmm?" H'el raised his eyebrows in surprise and looked at Gin, who responded with a smile.
The captain of the Fifth Division is Aizen Sousuke. H'el believed that Gin wasn't interested in Aizen.
Yet, Gin was still drawn to Aizen?
"Is it because of Aizen Sousuke?" H'el wondered but decided not to delve into it further. Each person has their own path, and if Gin decided to join the Fifth Division, so be it.
Whether he was following a path he had seen or one he had chosen anew, it made no difference to H'el.
"He came to see me. As your enemy, he has his merits. Perhaps I could learn something new from being around him," Gin said with a smile, satisfied to see that H'el didn't show any emotional reaction to his decision.
Choosing the Fifth Division and becoming Aizen's subordinate was a decision Gin had pondered for a long time.
Perhaps H'el didn't need it, but it wasn't a reason for Gin to do nothing just because H'el didn't require it.
Additionally, Gin wanted to see what he could achieve.
"Just self-styled as my enemy, what can he really amount to?" H'el shook his head, closing the ancient book. He placed a dark orb from the Three Thousand Worlds into the book and handed it to Gin, saying:
"Take this book to Aizen and have him place it in the Great Spirit Book Gallery beneath the Central 46 Chambers."
Gin took the book and replied with a smile, "I will."
