After the equipment arrived, Viper was engrossed in her laboratory work. Apart from her notorious personality and deeds, Viper was, in fact, more akin to a dedicated researcher.
"How can ordinary people's bodies endure heightened self-healing factors?" Viper pondered aloud as she removed her gloves and fixed her gaze on Max. "Any ideas?"
"I'm keen to delve into the intricacies of the human body structure," Max responded directly.
A mischievous smile played on Viper's lips. "It just so happens that I'm curious about your body and how the self-healing factor integrates with it."
"Take off your clothes and lie down," she instructed.
Without a word, Max complied, shedding his garments one by one. Viper, with her expertise in the field, knew exactly what was needed.
"Enjoying the view?" Max quipped as he lay there.
Viper couldn't help but giggle as the instruments started scanning. She then moved to the side and pointed to the monitor, explaining the details to Max. While Max had a basic understanding of human body structure, he craved a more in-depth knowledge, from blood vessels and meridians to intricate nerves. He thirsted for a comprehensive understanding.
It took more than an hour before Max stood up and donned his clothes.
"Actually, if you genuinely want an in-depth understanding, it's better to find a professional. Watching yourself on a screen like this is quite time-consuming," Viper advised.
Max was taken aback. "Why didn't you mention that earlier?"
Viper shrugged. "I only thought of it just now."
"Do you really expect me to believe that?" Max retorted in mild frustration. It was indeed a challenge to crane his neck and study the screen.
Max contemplated his options and decided to leave the laboratory. As soon as he stepped out, he encountered Yukio, who was holding a phone.
"Lorna from the Mutant underground base just called and said she's looking for you," Yukio informed him.
"Got it," Max acknowledged and promptly returned Lorna's call.
"What's up?" he inquired.
"The people at the base are almost ready; I need you to send them off," Lorna explained.
"Alright, I'll head over," Max confirmed, ending the call before making his way to the Mutant underground base.
.....
In the dimly lit underground base, there was a palpable sense of tension. The looming threat of discovery hung heavy in the air, and nearly twenty Mutants had gathered, packing their belongings in hushed silence. They were preparing to leave, and not everyone among them shared the same willingness to take these risks, especially after the loss of their pulse. Loyalty was a rare commodity, and many were hesitant to stay behind and aid the cause.
In the dimly lit hall, a door materialized silently, and out stepped Max, a mutant of unique abilities. He surveyed the room, his eyes meeting Lorna's, who stood beside him. With a touch of nonchalance, he asked, "Is this it?"
Lorna, with her fiery hair and a determined look, nodded. "Yes, everything is arranged. We just need you to open the door and guide them through." She spoke with conviction but then hesitated, her voice growing softer. "Can we have a quick chat over there?"
Max followed Lorna to a quieter corner of the hall, where Lorna expressed her concerns. "Given the current state of our base, could the compensation be postponed, Max?"
Max met her gaze and, in a surprising turn, offered, "I don't need the money, but I need a small favor from you."
Lorna looked puzzled. "What favor?"
"Be a model," Max responded, catching Lorna off guard.
"A model?" Lorna's brows furrowed in confusion.
Max clarified, "To be precise, I'm working on developing my ability, and I need an in-depth understanding of the human body's structure. I need a model, Lorna. If you agree, I won't ask for any payment this time. If not, you can owe me, but we'll settle it next time."
Lorna quickly grasped his intentions. "Why not ask Sonia? She'd probably be more willing."
Max turned, facing the departing Mutants. "Let me send them off first. Give me your answer when I return."
As Max escorted the Mutants to their vehicle and saw them off, Lorna quietly followed, her thoughts racing.
The journey to the Mexican border was a tense one, yet they managed to bypass any obstacles seamlessly, thanks to Lorna's meticulous planning and Max's unique abilities. With the passengers successfully smuggled into Mexico, the two comrades turned back, headed for home.
Upon returning to the underground base, they stepped out of the vehicle, and Lorna turned to Max. "Wait for me here; I'll go speak with John and the others."
Max's initial surprise gave way to a warm smile as he nodded, understanding the gravity of their mission.
