Chapter 30: Corpse

"Kaymen, are you sure its is a good idea to enter this forest?" Gigald, a young fourteen-year-old boy, accompanied Kaymen, a 27-year-old man, to the Dead Forest.

There was a myth that claimed anything and everything that entered the forest would end up dead. However, very few believed in that myth, as many had entered the forest and exited it without any harm.

Still, it was true that no plants or beasts thrived in the forest. If they were found, they were mostly dead, which is why the forest had earned its name.

Either way, for a field trip, Gigald was assigned the task of researching the Dead Forest, and Kaymen, who happened to be an enthusiastic adventurer, accompanied Gigald to the forest.

"Nothing to fear when I'm here," Kaymen smiled, walking ahead.

"I'm not so sure about that..." Gigald muttered under his breath, continuing to march forward.

They gazed at the dead trees and leaves that surrounded them. While Gigald was a little nervous due to the uncanny surroundings, to Kaymen, it was merely a walk in the park. He was rather confident, but his confidence shattered the moment he spotted something peculiar.

"Wha—" He moved his right hand, signaling Gigald to stop.

"What happened, Kaymen?" the boy asked, confused.

"Shh, don't move."

Hearing Kaymen's words, Gigald's interest piqued naturally. He moved cautiously, trying to see what lay ahead. What exactly had made Kaymen nervous?

Upon peeking, Gigald was forced to gasp aloud.

"Huff!" He took a step back.

Both his eyeballs trembled as the scene etched itself into his memory. His body trembled naturally, and his legs seemed to lose strength. Gulping hard, Gigald calmed himself and took a few steps forward to examine the scene again.

"What is that?" he asked, his voice barely audible.

"Bones..." Kaymen murmured.

Gulp—

Gigald knew that much. In front of him lay a gigantic corpse with only bones remaining.

"This... it looks like a dragon, doesn't it?" Gigald asked as he walked closer.

Kaymen, who accompanied him closer, nodded as he took a closer look.

"Could this be the same dragon that attacked about ten days ago?"

"That is the only possibility, because if the corpse was always here, then someone or the other would have already found it earlier," Kaymen agreed with Gigald's suggestion.

Gulp—

Both of them, although nervous, walked closer to the body to inspect the scene. However, their plan had to come to an abrupt halt when a man in his eighties appeared seemingly out of nowhere.

It was as if he had just teleported there.

"What are you doing here?" The man was dressed in old, tattered clothes and held a wand. His long white beard framed his face as he approached them, questioning.

"Senior, we were just adventuring in the woods when we encountered the corpse," Kaymen said, his voice filled with respect.

Following Kaymen, Gigald explained, "I received a project that brought us here."

The old man didn't ask further questions and simply nodded in understanding.

"Then get going; there's nothing much to see here," he said in a husky voice with a commanding tone that compelled Kaymen and Gigald to follow his instruction.

However, Kaymen's enthusiasm as an adventurer got the better of him, and he couldn't resist asking further about the matter.

"Forgive me, Senior, but is that the corpse of the dragon that attacked Hancer a few days ago?"

The old man nodded, adding, "Indeed, it's the same."

Gigald's curiosity grew upon hearing the reply, and he asked further, "Senior, do you happen to know how it ended up in this state?"

To this, the old man shook his head.

"Well, according to what I found… it looks like it burned in its own flames..."

"Eh? Aren't dragons immune to their own flames?" Kaymen, who knew a thing or two about dragons, voiced his doubt upon hearing that.

"Exactly, which is why it surprises me that the being was burned by its own flames."

Kaymen tapped his chin once or twice before offering another interesting perspective on the matter.

"Could it be that the dragon was first killed and only then burned?"

The old man's eyes opened wide as he heard that.

"That's a possibility..." he muttered to himself.

"Yes, after all, the legends say that as long as a dragon is alive, it can't be burned or hurt by its own flames... it doesn't state anything about the situation after its death." Kaymen's voice wavered, but he made a valid point.

"Indeed. But killing a dragon... that's no small feat," the old man said.

"True... I wonder, who is that person or being that managed to kill such a terrifying creature and then proceeded to burn it entirely?"

In one of the dark rooms of the secondary temple of Diablos, which had recently been invaded by an unknown group, nearly 50 people were gathered. They all wore black robes with matching black masks that covered their faces.

Various letters were engraved on the masks, ranging from A to Z, excluding L. The first 25 masks had these letters, while the remaining 25 featured different symbols. Some masks had a snow emblem, some had a fire symbol, and others displayed numbers.

They all sat in specially arranged chairs, forming a round table that covered the entire room. In the center of the room, one man stood out—the 51st member, distinguished by the symbol of Infinity on his mask.

"The Lord is going to arrive soon," he announced, his voice cold and chilling, instantly grabbing everyone's attention and silencing the room's whispers.

"Miss Maya, Master Daniel, and Master Noah have been brought to safety... So, you all deserve praise."

Upon hearing this, a few members felt a sense of pride, their chests swelling, and smiles on their faces.

"Those who took an active part in this, please stand up."

When Infinity made this request, about 15 members stood up.

"Let's applaud!"

Clap, clap—

Infinity started clapping, and soon, a wave of applause swept through the room. It continued for thirty seconds until Infinity spoke again.

"Enough."

The room fell into silence once more, with those who had stood up returning to their seats.

"Good work, but you all left it unfinished! Incomplete! What about Miss Vineca? Why haven't any of you found her yet?"

As he raised his voice, a powerful surge of killing intent emanated from Infinity, causing everyone to suffocate under its weight, and a few even fainted.
