Chapter 20: Battle at the Temple of Diablos, in Hancer [1]
"We returned from our daily prayers.", Noah said upon hearing the weird man asking them questions.
"Kha- Daily prayers?", the man had a weird look when he heard that.
"I have never heard of such a thing happening during the days of sacrifice.", The man was covering his body with a brown robe which not only hid his fat and bent body away, it also hid a stick that he used as a support.
He pulled out the stick, flashing it in front of Noah and pointing at him.
"Khack! Don't lie to me. Speak, who are you?"
Noah gulped a large chunk of saliva, thinking about how to convince the man and save the situation, but he didn't have to worry, for Daniel was right beside him.
"Ah, sir Monac, I think not everyone knows about the secret prayer.", Daniel said, hiding Noah's identity in the process with a fake name.
"Yes! Yes, sir Freshweld. It is a secret, so obviously not all are informed about it."
'Freshweld? From Rosfeld? Seriously?', Daniel eyed Noah for he couldn't think of a better name.
Either way, now it seemed like Noah and Daniel were conversing with each other, leaving the humpback man confused.
'Is there really such a thing…?', he questioned to himself, tapping his chin again and again.
Seeing this with a side-eye, Daniel continued, "But Sir, wasn't this prayer specifically done for the handicapped people?"
"What?", the man's eyes widened when he heard that.
Noah, understanding Daniel's intentions, continued, "Yes. It was indeed. Many had come, those without arms, legs and even humpbacks!"
"Wait, really?", the man's eyeballs trembled a bit as he heard this.
"Yes, and that's why I was wondering, why weren't you present there?", Daniel asked while facing the man.
"What could have kept you here, mister…?"
"Mellow."
"Yes, Mr. Mellow. What kept you here?"
Noyer Mellow, or so he was called, found himself in a rather awkward situation. His body trembled at the slightest bit of anger as he thought that an opportunity to heal was snatched away from him.
He was not too smart, nor was he foolish, but when it came to the talks regarding his body, he would become dumb.
"Why didn't you join the rest?", Daniel further questioned.
Noyer scratched his head like a fool, confused and then said, "K-kha! No one informed me…"
"Is- Kha. Is there any way to…"
"Khack… pardon. Can I join now?"
Daniel and Noah exchanged glances with a nod after which Noah said, "You can, but not now."
"We both are tired and must inform about all the people we healed."
"I think after informing the head priest, we can discuss the matter related to you."
After hearing Noah, the man almost instantly opened the door wide.
"Khack- I never heard about the free treatment to heal handicaps, but if you are doing it…"
"Then yes!"
"Yes, please! Could you finish your tasks, Kha! Ahem, and come as soon as possible?", Noyer's eyes were brightly lit now, as if he had gained a sort of hope.
"Sure.", Noah said with a smile as he walked forward, entering the boundaries of the temple.
Daniel followed closely and entered, both of them walking away from the area and planning to enter the main building for they were merely in the yard right now.
"I will wait."
"A little more won't hurt.", he said to himself.
"Thank you almighty Diablos! For sending them!", he prayed to the one he believed, Diablos, as a drop of tear grazed his chin.
All he could do now was wait!
But Noyer, the poor guy, didn't realize that he was being fooled. He merely sang a song for himself, even with the disability of speaking properly. He closed the gates slowly and gently and pivoted around, staring at the far end where Noah and Daniel took a left turn.
.
.
.
"Father Gin.", a feminine voice echoed in a silent hall.
A large statue that belonged to Diablos, portrayed as a tall half-naked man with curly hair holding a wand and a book, in right and left hand respectively, was fitted to the gigantic wall. In front of it was a large wooden table on which were candles that were being lit one by one by a rather old man, short-statured and a bit chubby.
But from his outfit, anyone could recognize him as a priest.
Close to him stood a female who was tall and beautiful. She looked young for her skin was smooth, a contrast to the wrinkles that sat on Gin's face.
She called out to him a few times, "Father Gin, here. Father Gin."
"Father Gin."
She was handing out the candles which Gin would pick and place on the table, lighting them right after.
After having placed all the candles carefully, Gin pivoted towards the woman.
"So, Lara, are they all lit?"
The woman, Lara, worked as a priestess in the temple. She looked at the man in front of him, with respect and a little bit of pity for Gin was blind.
There were a few scars that adorned his eyes. Furthermore, he lacked any pupils – or it seemed that way for his pupils were completely white, fading away into the eyes.
An unfortunate man he was, but he believed in Diablos so much, that he was granted the power to see despite being blind – of course, not entirely, he could only see the energy and aura in the form of colours.
"Yes, father.", she said, her voice soft.
With a smile, he raised his left hand. Lara knowing what he meant, walked close to him, grabbing ahold of his hand and walking along with him.
Having taken a few steps, Gin all of a sudden asked, "Has Master Jorren not returned yet?"
"Um, no. He did bring three people previously. Not sure why. Probably he wanted their help to catch the Devil worshippers…"
"Are you sure Lara? Why would a Grand Wizard require the help of some kids?", Gin asked, confused genuinely.
"Not sure Father. Surely he didn't bring them to act as sacrifices. The only thing I can think of was that…"
"Or, he might just want to adopt them?"
"Sigh. No one can understand the Grand Wizards' mind… it's best we-", Gin was going to end the convo by letting the matter go when all of a sudden, he observed something.
Pausing the talk, he raised his voice, "Who goes there!?"
Noah and Daniel who stood behind a wall, were startled by the voice. They had arrived at the place but remained hidden as they noticed Gin and Lara in the main hall!
Both of them were about to flee from the place when all of a sudden, a chain appeared from the ground, binding onto Daniel's legs. The same was true with Noah.
Pointing the wand at the chain, Noah uttered, "Preira Rasm."
A pentagram appeared adorned with a yellow glow which on colliding with the chains, caused a large blast, throwing Noah away several feet.
Bam!
With a bam, he fell to the ground, staring at his right leg which now bled. Raising his gaze, he noticed Daniel was still stuck.
Raising his wand and pointing at the chains, he was about to chant a similar spell when all of a sudden, a dome-shaped barrier appeared out of nowhere, surrounding him.
Came with that was a voice from the left, another woman wearing a black robe came rushing, with a want pointed at Noah.
"Who are you?", she raised her voice for she saw the black chains chasing him, slowly coming towards him.
Noah, seeing the wand pointed at him, merely smirked.
"Heh, you think this barrier can hold me?", he raised his wand and swung it from left to right with great force.
"Beserto!"
With the appearance of a faintly glowing blue pentagram, a gust of fierce wind burst forth, blasting away towards the barrier.
Creak-
Crack!
A small crack appeared on the barrier at first, weakening it and then ultimately, shattering it into pieces like shards of glass!
The shards, having their materialistic forms, blew away towards the woman who had just appeared, but she protected herself by raising another barrier just in time – of course, it was not large but more than enough to protect her body from the front.
Meanwhile, Daniel who was shackled by the chains, heard the devil's voice.
[What are you doing boy!?]
[Make a run!]
But Daniel was merely fidgeting, only to end up pausing all of a sudden.
"My wand…", he muttered, having a small flashback of it having broken previously.
"Ugh! It completely skipped my mind!", Daniel almost facepalmed himself as he recalled, his eyes wide. But it was just then that the barrier confining Noah shattered.
A second later, Noah leapt forward and with a short-range Stynom, appeared right next to Daniel, aiming at the chains and using the spell he used previously.
Clang!
But he misfired and the spell hit a bunch of chains on the far end which had cracked the ground and come out.
A chain had grabbed Noah from his neck, and pulled him, causing him to misfire.
Cough!
Noah's eyes bulged as the pressure around his neck increased, choking him.
"Sir!", Daniel screamed loudly.
He couldn't think of a way out of the situation, but it was just then that the devil came to the rescue.
[You don't need a wand! Just use a spell!]
A confused expression remained etched on Daniel's face as Lara and Gin arrived at the scene, stumbling upon the chaos. Without wasting time, Lara pulled out her wand which was hidden away in her long pocket sleeves.
But of course, Daniel said the spell – trying to free Noah.
"Aqualus!" – he chanted, but not sure how it would work.
A sphere of water appeared right in front of him, merely levitating.
"Wha-"
Daniel's concentration wavered and the spell ended, the ball of water exploding abruptly and splashing the water all over him!
Lara raised her wand and cast a spell that erected an invisible barrier – preventing even the tiniest drop of water from falling on Gin!
As soon as Daniel was lunged back with chains, she wasted no time in putting him and Noah to sleep by chanting – "Mesos Asrior!"
