Zaos stared in puzzlement at his reflection on the water's surface.
During the five months he had spent training, he had occasionally glimpsed at his reflection through different reflective surfaces, yet the image he was currently gazing at differed completely from what he was used to.
The figure staring back at him from the surface of the water had shoulder-length purple hair, dark purple eyes, and healthy pale skin.
The facial features of the figure also differed a bit from Zaos' memories; the figure's features were sharper and more defined.
"Did my evolution change my appearance?" The thought suddenly struck Zaos as he attentively observed his reflection.
"Does that mean my old appearance is lost?" Just as Zaos was contemplating the implications of his sudden change, his reflection on the mirrored surface slowly began to morph.
Alarmed, Zaos recoiled in horror, fearing his body would begin to melt once more. Yet his fears were misplaced, he wasn't melting.
[What's going on?] Zaos returned to his original position hoping to glimpse at his reflection once more.
Standing in front of the barrel, Zaos gazed at his reflection only to be stunned by what he saw.
"... I reverted to my previous appearance?" Zaos grabbed his long hair and observed it without the help of the mirror.
Similar to his reflection, his hair color was black, not purple!
"Was what I saw earlier an illusion?" Zaos tried visualizing his previous appearance. Immediately he did so, his reflection on the water's surface began morphing once more.
The sudden change snapped Zaos out of his thoughts causing him to gaze at the water. From the roots of his hair, a purple tinge slowly spread until it dyed his formerly black hair purple, his deep black eyes gained a purple tone, and his facial features slowly became more distinct.
Zaos was dumbfounded. He stared blankly at his likeness on the water's surface.
After a few seconds, a thought suddenly struck him, [did I gain the ability to morph my appearance?]
He tried visualizing his former appearance as Jack.
In a few seconds, his form began to shift; his height increased slowly, taking him from a height of 170 cm to 180 cm, his toned physique gained a significant amount of muscle, his healthy pale skin gained a tan, his elven ears and youthful facial features vanished in a blink of an eye leaving only human ears and a tough face of a middle-aged man.
[I never thought I would see this face again… ] Zaos sighed at the mystical power of his new ability.
[With this ability, I can effectively change my identity whenever I see fit, even the Qildor clan won't be able to track me if I choose to leave!] The prospects of his new ability filled Zaos with joy.
He stood by the barrel changing his appearance into different individuals, after a few minutes, he stopped, having gained a general understanding of his abilities.
[I can only morph into humanoid creatures. Creatures like savage beasts with bizarre appearances can't be imitated… ] Zaos was a bit disappointed with this outcome but there was nothing he could do.
[Maybe if I evolve further I can morph into a savage beast… ] As the thought of evolution crossed his mind, Zaos' thoughts halted.
"I have never heard of a dark elf gaining the power to shapeshift after an evolution… Was this outcome influenced by void mana? Can I still be considered a dark elf?" Zaos' thoughts trailed off when he recalled the vampiric traits bestowed upon him by his identity as a dark elf.
"Do I lose my abilities?!" Zaos hastily scanned the room, searching for his dagger. Once he found it, he made his way over, grabbed it, and proceeded to stab himself in the arm.
"Argh!" Zaos winced in pain as he pulled out the ordinary metal dagger from his arm.
He stared intently at the massive wound formed by his actions. A few seconds in, the wound slowly started to heal, bringing relief to the anxious Zaos.
Phew~
He exhaled loudly.
[It seems my vampiric healing still exists, it also seems to have strengthened a bit… ] He didn't bother trying out his senses since he was currently in a confined space underground.
[Will my bloodlust remain since I still possess my vampiric genes?] Zaos speculated. Even after consuming the elixir concocted from skivii blood and vene-zular leaves, Zaos' bloodlust persisted albeit with less intensity. He was able to utilize his strong willpower to overcome its lingering effects, yet his situation was different now, he couldn't ascertain if his advancement had cured his intense craving for blood or if it had amplified it.
[I can only test it out when I exit this place,] Zaos sighed as he concluded. He then shifted his attention to other matters.
He closed his eyes and focused on his soul. Slowly, his consciousness sunk into its depths, searching for the peculiar purple-black symbol that nested within it.
In but a few seconds, Zaos perceived his void Edict Rune in all of its glory. The once rudimentary circle now had a more refined appearance albeit not perfect, the mysterious inscriptions on its surface looked more mystical and complex; a single glance at them and a rush of information flooded Zaos' mind.
His consciousness quickly exited his soul as he absorbed the information he received. A few minutes later, Zaos opened his eyes as he muttered to himself.
"Devour…" He spoke softly.
"My second stage property is 'Devour'…" Zaos contemplated the implications of the word.
His first stage property absence represented negation, the power to nullify attributes, it represented the emptiness of the void.
[What could devour symbolize?] Zaos thought deeply on the matter.
[If absence symbolizes emptiness, does devour symbolize the tendency to adopt attributes? To imprint them onto the blank slate by absorbing them?] Zaos felt his Edict Rune buzz with activity when this thought surfaced in his mind.
[I'm not entirely correct but I'm on the right track?] Zaos judged from the intensity of his Edict Runes' reaction.
[Hmm… ] He gazed around, observing his surroundings. He eventually spotted a chest filled with food left by his subordinates. He walked up to it and grabbed some dried savage beast's meat. Compared to regular creatures, meat from savage beasts took years to go bad after being properly stored, they also contained more nutrients than regular creatures.
Holding the piece of 'beef' jerky, Zaos thought for a few moments before saying in a deep voice.
"Devour!" He activated his Edict Rune as he drew in void mana from the surroundings to fuel his elemental weave.
A purple-black maw formed at the center of his open palm, it consumed the piece of dried meat and rapidly resided in his palm.
Zaos felt a rush of energy funnel into his body after the maw disappeared. He savored the sensation and nodded to himself.
[I really can absorb attributes. How interesting!] Zaos stroked his chin as he thought.
[I should familiarize myself with my new abilities before heading out. I have been here for far too long…] And with that, Zaos began another round of training to acquaint himself with his new abilities.
