“Let’s look around for Ashura first. He is the only one who can give us a clear answer in this situation anyway.”
It was an easy deduction to make for the pair. 21 had never spoken, Mahiru was a mystery and the Baron would never cooperate with them. So, their first obstacle was already in front of them.
“I think I might know the general direction of Ashura’s room. I remember splitting from Ashura at that cross-junction. So, his room must be in that corridor.”
Kurina pointed toward the right-side corridor with confidence. They had gotten lucky to end up in this corridor of all places and her direction was what Alex decided to follow.
But soon they got into trouble again. And it was because all the corridors looked identical to the previous one. There was no way to tell which corridor they were in without a map to assist them.
“Fuck, this sucks. This just looks like the corridor my room was in.”
Kurina pointed out and Alex agreed with her. This looked like the corridor his room was in. It looked like this was a dead end for them.
‘Knock on the doors. Check this corridor.’
The goddess decided to help Alex out and he stepped forward to knock on a door. No one answered him but Alex did not give up. He continued to knock on all the doors until someone replied.
“Excuse me, but do you need something from me? I am sorry but this door will not open no matter what I do, so can someone go and get the keys for me?”
Ashura’s polite voice came from behind the door. Alex tried to open the door but it did not open for him either.
“Ashura, it is me and Kurina. We are here to check up on you. Can you open the door from inside?”
Alex asked as he tried to open the door once more. The lock on the door did not even bulge a single bit and it remained tightly shut.
“Alex? And Kurina? Oh, then God you both are here. I tried to open this door again and again, but refuses to open for me. I do not know what to do at this point.”
Ashura yelled back as he made his way toward the door as well, Alex took a step back and Kurina took his place. She had a hairpin in her hand that she could use as a lock picker.
She had learned this skill during her street time and now she was thankful that she had. It came in handy at such an unexpected time.
But somehow, it turned out that Kurina did not even need to use the lock-picker to open the door. As soon as touched the door to try out the grip, it unlocked.
Alex’s eyes picked up a hint of gold all around her body when she opened the door.
“Huh? This was easy. Are you sure that this door was locked in the first place? It gave me no problems.”
Alex was sure that this door had something to do with the golden glow that had surrounded Kurina’s body when she tried to open the door. There was no other way to explain how this door opened for her.
“Are you kidding me? I have been trying to open this door for about an hour now but it refused to budge for me. You must have some tricks up your sleeve and…”
“I do not. I just twisted the lock and it opened. Alex, tell him that I did not have any tricks up my sleeve.”
Kurina defended herself as Ashura made accusations against her. The atmosphere was getting tenser by the second.
But despite all this, Alex’s attention was fixed on the sound of footsteps heading his way. He could tell that someone was walking in their direction. They needed to hurry up and walk out of the way.
“You both, stop fighting and quickly hide. Someone is coming this way.”
Alex grabbed both Kurina as well as Ashura by their arms and dragged them into the room. The door was left open and it was easy to notice by the others.
But much to their amazement, the guard who walked past their room did not even notice. Alex opened the door just a tiny bit to look outside.
The walking guard paused before he turned. The guard’s face was skinny and void of any signs of life. It was almost as of Alex was looking at a skeleton.
“Holy! Look at that face. What the hell is wrong with his guard? Did he not get to eat enough food or something?”
Kurina questioned as she leaned out to look at the guard as well. Her voice was quiet but it still echoed in the empty hallway. It was just loud enough to make the guard hear them and turn around.
All three of them ducked back into the room and waited for the guard to come and find them.
The guard walked outside of their room a few times in concussion. He walked around and everyone else waited for him to enter the room or ask them a question.
But the guard just walked past them without looking back. They all breathed a sigh of relief as they came out of their hiding spot.
“What the hell? I thought I was dead there. Man, what is wrong with these guards? They look like zombies.”
Kurina’s words were not wrong. Alex could also tell that the moment of these guards and other people was not normal. They seemed unaware of what they were doing and where they were going.
“I have a bad feeling about this. I want to check out what is happening but I also do not want to leave Mahiru alone. Can you two help me reach Mahiru’s room?”
Ashura asked and Alex was about to deny him his request in favour of looking around more when he was beaten to the punch.
Kurina and her huge crush could not deny Ashura of anything. So, she grabbed Alex’s arm to make him stay and flashed Ashura a huge smile at the same time.
“Of course, we are willing to help you out. You are our comrade and we want to help you out as much as we can. "
Well, Alex did not want to help Kurina and Ashura out. But he was being made to help them out anyway. It sucked for him but he was in no position to complain about it.
"You sure you want to help me out? Alex does not look enthusiastic at all and you also seem busy. I do not want to cause you trouble and…"
"You are no trouble at all. I would love to help you. Here, I also have something for you."
Kurina brought out a small jewel she had pocketed during the day. Other than looking pretty, it served no other purpose but it would fetch quite a large sum of money in the market.
It was clear to Alex why Kurina was giving it to Ashura in the first place. She was letting Ashura know that she fancied him and Ashura made the most awkward face he had ever in his life as he accepted that gift.
“Thank you for your thoughtful gift. I am sure that Mahiru would like a pendant made from this jewel a lot. I am delighted that you gave this to me.”
Kurina’s hopeful expression dropped down in an instant and awkwardness took its place on her face. She quickly tried to make herself disappear before she could be insulted any more.
“I s-see. That is true. Mahiru would look beautiful with a pendant made up of this stone. I-I should look around to see what is going on. No matter how I see it, this place is far too suspicious.”
Kurina made a quick escape once she was not able to control her feelings. She looked back at Ashura one last time to see if he would stop her or not.
But his look of obliviousness made Kurina awake that he had no intention of looking at the real meaning of her words. He was letting Kurina down even after knowing what his words meant to her.
And for that, Kurina loved and hated him equally.
“You do know what she meant when she gave you the jewel. You are a bastard for ignoring Kurina’s feelings like this.”
Alex ended up saying these words to Ashura even if he did not mean to. It was not like he would be any better at this dating stuff than Ashura was.
But he also knew that he would treat his partner with respect and would not dismiss their feelings.
“I know that Kurina’s in love with me. She has been in love with me for a long time. But I…. cannot take her feelings seriously. I do not have the time, or the heart to look at another girl that is not Mahiru.”
It seemed as if there was something weird about Ashura’s feelings about Mahiru. But Alex decided not to look too deeply into it. Whatever shit was between these people, they could solve it on their own. There was no need to drag Alex into this.
