Smoke and fire was all that he could see. Screams of desperation before death and sadistic laughter were the only things that he could hear. He choked on the smoke and felt blisters building up in his feet as he had been running, searching, for hours through the burning remains of his hometown.
It had all happened so suddenly. One second, the young eleven-year-old boy was playing with his friends and in within the blink of an eye everything had become chaos. That wasn't important, however, the boy needed to find what he was looking for. He ran through the streets that were now barely recognizable to him as he tried to make his way back home.
"Please help me!"
"Hey get back here kid it dangerous!"
"Someone save my wife please!" He all of these voices but did his best to ignore them as he dashed through the maze of debris and death. "Mom! Dad! Where are you?" The boy screamed through the streets not caring if he was found. "It's me Mill just tell me your okay! Please!"
His feet were covered in severe cuts and bruises cause extreme pain as they were slamming into the pavement but Mill didn't care. He just needed to find his parents. He kept running past people begging for help until he finally saw his family home and came to a sliding stop before it.
It had been completely destroyed almost beyond recognition but that didn't matter to the boy as he began to desperately look around for his parents. "Mom! Dad! Please say something! We need to-" The Mill froze.
His father was currently laying on the ground before him, or at least the top half of his body was. The boy slowly approached as tears had already began to pour from his eyes but other no reaction. He couldn't react as he couldn't believe the sight before him.
"R-run Mill." A weak voice called out from a few feet away. Mill slowly looked up from his father's corpse as he recognized the voice. "Mom? What happ-" The tears dried quickly as now even his own body was to shocked to react. His mother. The woman that had raised him as her own even though she knew that he wasn't truly hers and had introduced Mill to a level of warmth that no other could replicate.
That woman was currently impaled on the arm of a hooded figure that was covered in blood from the many innocents of the town. The hooded man turned to Mill and, though his face was completely obscured , his sadistic smile and bloodthirsty eyes could be seen by the young boy. The boy was frozen with something. Was it fear, rage, saddness, or some other emotion it was just so confusing. It was like he was in a trance because he wanted to move but couldn't even though he tried desperately. He heard a deep, distorted and sinister chuckle ring through the air and immediately knew that it was the hooded person.
"Do you hear them my friend? The screams of fear and desperation. The despair that everyone here is feeling. Do you hear it?" As the figure spoke Mill started to hear the voices that he had been blocking out loudly in his own head.
"Why won't you help!"
"Save me please!"
Mill tried to cover his ears but the voices didn't stop. He closed his eyes but those horrible eyes and that insane smile didn't go away. The figure spoke again, "You lived. You survived all of this and didn't even think of helping anyone. It's your fault that they died Mill. This bloodshed, this despair. It's all on your hands. EMBRACE THE GHOSTS OF THE PAIN YOU'VE CAUSED!
"MILL, HELP!"
"WHY DIDN'T YOU SAVE US?!"
"YOU'RE JUST LIKE THEM. JUST LIKE THEM, MILL!"
"MILL!"
MILL!
Mill.
...
"MILL!" Mill jolted up from his bed to be greeted by his sister holding him by his shirt. "Mill, wake up you piece of shit!" Mill's sister, Novaria, shook him violently as she didn't see his eyes open.
"Stop shaking me Nova I'm up!" Mill's voice got Nova's attention and she dropped him on the spot.
"Oh good, you're up. Now get dressed we don't have much time." Nova turned to leave the room now that Mill was awake.
"Get dressed? What are you talking about?" Nova stopped her exit and turned towards her half-asleep brother.
"Hey Gregamor, hurry and wake up so that we don't waste any more time. You're gonna be late for the Heroite." Mill was going to get upset when he realized what it was that he needed to get dressed for.
"Shit, you're right!" Mill stood up and started to quickly get ready to go to school for the Heroite.
"How could I have over slept!" Mill put on his school uniform as fast as he could tripping up in the process. After his clothes were on ran into the bath and began to wash his face and fix his hair.
Mill has soft, light blue hair in an undercut hairstyle. His bright yellow eyes and white teeth shined in the mirror. Mill stared at his own reflection for a few seconds remembering the nightmare. He winced for a second before shaking his head to clear his mind. "Gotta go." Mill grabbed the rest of his stuff and ran downstairs.
"See you later, Aunt Jenny." Mill said as he rushed out the door trying not to waste any more time.
"Bye, Mill." Mill's aunt called from the kitchen. After Mill left Nova came down the stairs and entered the kitchen.
"I can't say that I'm surprised that he's late. He never was one to be on time." Nova said in a mocking tone.
"Neither were you." When she heard Jenny say this Nova's face turned bright red.
"L-let's just go to his stupid Heroite." Nova went to wait in the car outside to escape from her embarrassment.
Meanwhile, Mill was running down the street and taking any shortcuts he could to get to the school on time.
"How could I be late on a day as important as the Heroite?!" Mill knew that if he missed that if he missed the Heroite that he may have to wait for the next one and he just couldn't handle that.
The Heroite is the most important event if someone wants to become an adventurer because it tests one bloodline. Over the large expanse of history in this world there have been many heroes and parties that have caused significant impacts. These people were mostly good except for the fact that they didn't know when to keep it in their pants.
No one would get upset at these people though, seeing as they were constantly risking their lives. They probably needed the release to keep their own sanity or something. Now, as a result of chronic lust, the bloodlines of these heroes have been spread far and wide in the country of Eidron. Thus the Heroite, it was created to discover the bloodline that a person possesses and the ability that they should gain should the blood be pure enough.
"I can't wait to be an adventurer!" Mill turned into an alley and ran through it. This is a frequent shortcut because he is late often. At the end of the alley is a giant fence with a locked door. Mill never planned on using the door as he begins to run on the wall next to him.
Mill jumped back and forth between two walls until he managed to bound over the fence. He landed on the ground and could now see the school directly in front of him.
"I'm one step closer after today." Mill ran into the school and headed directly for the auditorium where the event was taking place. As he got closer to the doors Mill could hear a voice coming from the door.
"Bloodline of Hence Karwell discovered. Blood purity: 15%. Ability: Minor flame control. Type: Passive"
Mill burst through the doors and saw a person removing their hand from some sort of machine. This was the Line Reader, the most important part of the Heroite. This was the machine that read your bloodline and told you its purity.
As Mill stood and watched the machine from the door someone called out to him.
"I see that you have finally arrived Mister Kabrok." Mill looked to his right and saw his homeroom teacher standing by the door staring daggers at him.
"Mr. Wiol! Uh, Yeah! Here I am!" Mr. Wiol had always been the one to dig into Mill when he was late to school. This time, however, he simply let out a sigh.
" I don't know I why I expected anything else from you. Come with me, Mill. It seems that you are the last one to be tested." Mr. Wiol walked towards the stage and Mill followed closely behind. As they arrived on stage Mill could here whispers in the crowd.
"I told you he'd be late! Pay up!"
"By the Blaze, he couldn't have been on time for just today."
"I still don't know why you took the bet."
Mill ignored the people speaking about him being late and just looked at the Line Reader. As they approached Mill noticed that there was a woman standing next to the machine. She wore goggles around her neck and had blonde hair tied into a ponytail.
"Is this the last student?" The women asked coldly as she gestured to Mill
"That it is Dr. Kabon." Mr. Wiol answered and pushed Mill toward the woman. She took a casual glance at Mill and then pointed to the machine.
"Lets not waste time then. Prick your finger then place your hand on the screen you see in front of you the machine will do the rest. Once we have your bloodline and ability you are free to go. Mill could understand the woman's indifference to the situation seeing as she clearly was ready to leave.
Mill walked up the the machine and placed his hand on the screen. The machine started to glow beautiful colors as it activated at Mill's touch.
"Analyzing Bloodline" A monotonous female spoke from the machine. Mill waited in anticipation for the machine to finish analyzing his blood. He waited.
And waited
...and waited?
The machine was taking an abnormally long time to tell him his bloodline. Mill knew this Dr. Kabon was also confused. She was going to check if something was wrong when the machine suddenly let out a chime informing everyone that it was done. But no one expected what happened next.
Analyzation finished.
No Bloodline Detected.
