As Charlie lay on his bed, feeling low and wanting to give up on his dreams, he held the golden ticket in front of his eyes, deep in thought. The date of the competition was only three days away, and a glimmer of hope emerged within him. However, the memory of his destroyed book of lyrics dampened his spirits. He couldn't see a way forward without it, unsure of how to showcase his unique talent.
Amid his turmoil, his phone rang, indicating an incoming call from Chloe. Charlie hesitated for a moment before finally picking it up. "What?" he questioned in an arrogant manner, not in the mood for playful banter.
Chloe, who knew her friend all too well, sensed that Charlie wasn't okay. She probed gently, "Charlie, what's wrong? Is it your stepmom again? What did they do to you?"
Charlie sniffed and replied, "It's nothing, Chloe. I'm just having a hard time."
Concerned for her friend, Chloe persisted, "Come on, Charlie. I've known you since childhood, and I can tell when something's bothering you. But if you don't want to talk about it, I'll just give you some advice. Don't give in to their words. If you let them get to you, that's when you'll become what they think of you. And never give up on your dreams."
Charlie felt a sense of relief hearing Chloe's words of encouragement. Though he was still hurting, he teased her playfully, "Okay, Chloe, I never knew you were such a good mentor."
Chloe played along dramatically, "Oh, Charlie, I'll do anything for such an amazing friend like you."
The two friends chuckled, and Charlie felt a momentary sense of relief from his pain. He suddenly recalled Mr. Wisely's words, "Some friends are destined." Charlie knew that friends like Chloe were more than destined, and he found comfort in that thought. He believed that with her support, his struggles would come to an end.
Before ending the call, he asked Chloe for Richelle's number. Chloe had initially forgotten she had it but quickly remembered and teased Charlie about the reason he wanted Richelle's number so bad, before sending the mixed up number.
With some hesitation, Charlie dialed the number and waited anxiously. As the phone rang, his heart raced. When someone finally answered, Charlie eagerly said, "Hello, my lady."
However, to his shock, a male voice responded on the other end. It was Ryan. Charlie paused for a moment, puzzled by the mix-up but decided to continue with the call. He attempted to explain his plans for the following day, hoping to get a chance to speak with Richelle.
But before he could finish, Ryan's voice grew arrogant and unwelcoming. "Look, I don't give a crap about what plans you have, and I don't ever want to. We don't want anything to do with you and your childish friend. Don't ever call me or Richelle again. We don't have time for all your stupid, childish stuff."
Charlie tried to respond, his heart sinking with each hurtful word, but Ryan quickly ended the call, leaving him speechless and hurt. He couldn't believe his ears, feeling rejected by his once close friend.
Still unable to process what had just happened, Charlie thought about calling Chloe for comfort. But he soon realized that it was her regular bedtime, and she wouldn't miss it for the world. He felt more alone than ever, left to confront the pain of the shattered call all by himself.
