A grey-haired man in a hood walked briskly into an alley while looking around to be sure he wasn't followed. It was the dead of night, and it was quiet. He came to a stop and pulled out a device from his pocket. It was a small black orb that looked like a strange pebble. He tapped it twice, and a hologram appeared before him. A silhouette appeared in the hologram, and the grey-haired man bowed his head, not daring to look into the person's face. You could tell it was a man from the silhouette on the screen. "It's rare for you to call me at such an hour. What is it?"
The man cupped his fist and greeted, "Your Lordship, accept this humble one's greetings…" The man on the screen shook his head and cut his speech, "Just get to the point I am busy."
The man nodded and quickly responded, "Right… As requested, I investigated Lin's ability again and found something peculiar. I'm afraid he would be in trouble if he doesn't discover this soon." He explained.
The man said impatiently, "Just go straight to the point and stop wasting time."
"Right, right", the man said and continued, "The young master's ability doesn't actually make him stronger. Rather, it makes him weaker. As we all know, each elemental ability belongs to a spectrum. We have red for flame-related abilities, blue for water-related, green for plants and various colours for the others. The young master's, however, is black, and instead of raising one's strength like the others, it makes them weaker."
"If that is the case, how did he survive till now." He asked, hoping the grey-haired man would clear his doubts. The grey-haired man answered, "My Lord, though the black spectrum makes him weaker, it has a special trait unlike the others…" he paused briefly.
"And that is?" the man on the screen asked eagerly. "Biasing", the man answered. "The black spectrum works like an absorbent or, more accurately, a reflector. It taps into all the other spectrums and reflects the required strength in the young master, however, under the right conditions, this biasing can become inactive, and when that happens, even a rank 0 could kill the young master with a single punch."
"Is that so? And what are these conditions you speak of?"
"Exhaustion of the biasing aura", the grey-haired man said seriously with a hint of worry in his voice? Realising this, he was questioned, "Are you just worried about your disciple?"
"My Lord, no master would rest easy knowing their disciple could be in danger."
"Hahahaa", the man laughed and said, "But a master knows his disciple best and should be confident in his abilities, no?" The grey-haired man smiled lightly and said, "You are right, your lordship. It seems my worries were misplaced. If there is nothing more, then I will take my leave." The call disconnected, and he left the alley.
A man stared blankly into an alley as he heard a sudden crashing sound. He saw a white-haired man on all fours looking his way. He peered momentarily and walked briskly off, "What a weird man that is", he thought. He found it weird anyone would be in the rain in such a manner instead of quickly finding a place to shelter from the rain. He need not be there like that, even if he were a beggar.
The awe-stricken young man struggled up while staring at the departing man. "What was that just now?" he thought as he lifted a hand to his face. Aside from the fact that he had lost a bit of weight, there was nothing peculiar to notice. "That man just now had no aura, meaning my judgement wasn't wrong. He is just a normal person. I don't seem to have any problem drawing out my power, though because of how exhausted I am, I can not do much. If so, what just happened?" Lin was lost in thought as he stared blankly into the distance.
"Perhaps the system could have some information. System, is there anything wrong with my body?"
<Notice>
<Your biasing aura has been depleted, you have returned to your original state>
"Original state? Biasing aura? What are you talking about?" he remained quiet, but no reply came. "Ugh, I forgot about that. System, explain"
Several messages popped up in his head as the system explained everything to him. He nodded after it stopped popping up. "So that's how it is. There were no such effects in the past because my biasing aura was still intact. To think I could go into this state all this time. I really was lucky." He looked around and walked towards the exit of the alley. "System, how do I replenish my biasing aura?"
<Notice>
<The biasing aura will be replenished naturally after some time; however, the cause of your biasing aura depletion was the quantum streak tablet; hence, care should be taken when using it.>
"Come to think of it, when I disappeared from the cave, I appeared in a forest, then in the desert. I kept appearing and disappearing in strange places, which means I must have been left here because it was depleted. I must find somewhere to lay low until I regain full health".
In Terasphere, the cities were very crowded. As the time approached for the ranking bouts to begin, many people were on the move to get their attires and armours ready for the prelims, which will commence in four days. The princesses and princes of the various families were no different. They trained relentlessly in preparation for the bout prelims.
Back in Aquasphere, Lin had also been hunting to increase his strength. On this day, he came to a small hut on a hill surrounded by water. A rugged man laid on a mat, snoring very loudly. He looked young, about 40 and had a short, unkempt beard. He had short hair and wore an old ash sweater above brown buggy trousers. The hut was empty except for a mat and a chair with a roughly made wooden spear for fishing.
He was suddenly awoken by a loud knock on his door. He sprung up like a spring, grabbed his spear and rushed out of the hut. He discovered a white-haired man in front of his door. He held the spear like a cane and raised it at the man. "You little shit. Why didn't you come yesterday?"
Lin was flustered and quickly jumped back. "I'm so sorry, Xu", he pleaded with his hands together. Xu gritted his teeth and gave Lin a chase around the hut. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry", Lin pleaded as he ran along. After giving chase for some time, Xu let him be and went into the hut. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry", Lin kept pleading in front of the door.
"That man is named Xu. I ran into him two days after I left the alley. He is a rank 0 but great at using a spear nonetheless. He was picking some herbs when he saw me fighting and was infuriated by my shabby use of the spear. He decided to teach me a few techniques. He is a spear enthusiast and is very stubborn."
"We've been at it for the past few days. I can't say I have made much progress, and tomorrow is the Ranking Bout prelims. I would have to at least master one of the techniques."
He went to the hut and continued pleading in front of the door. From that moment until the next day, Lin practised with the spear before the shack. Except for taking water breaks, he trained until he felt like his limbs would turn into spaghetti.
