Chương 19: Chapter Nineteen: Wholesome Night

"Uh….I was talking to um…no one."

"No one, but I heard your voice just now and it was loud enough to not be a whisper." Bennet insisted with a suspicious look on his face.

"I don't think that was me." Erina denied before grabbing both of them by their arms. "Come on, let's go inside."

"What about the boy that was on our bed?" Bennet asked abruptly before she could take a step forward. "He said he was coming out here to meet you and we saw him leave the room."

"Oh, you mean Devon he was um…."

"Hey, guys."

That was Devon's voice that just came from the side near the left side where the little bush beside their house was.

He could be seen approaching them now, but he was dragging along something with him.

"When did you?"

Erina wasn't able to finish the question as she was quite stunned trying to put everything together.

She was with him just now before the siblings showed up, and he had already gone out and killed a deer.

"I went off to the bush there to release some liquid back to the soil when I found this dude hanging out in the area." He explained as he moved closer to them.

As soon as he got close enough to them, he let the beast drop right in front of them.

"Looks like you're having deer meat for dinner, kids."

"I love deer meat." Maya declared with a bright smile emitting from her.

"How did you kill it?" Bennet inquired before moving closer to him, his eyes filled with curiosity. "Father always went out with a spear whenever he wanted to get us meat and most of the time he comes back empty-handed and ends up buying some from the hunters."

"Oh, I found this lying on the floor in that area," Devon replied before revealing the small knife in his hand which was covered in blood now.

As soon as Bennet spotted the knife, his eyes suddenly widened in amazement.

"Father told me you can't kill a deer with a short weapon because they're too fast but you did that with this knife that my mother has been looking for for a long time now."

"Oh, it's no big deal, the dude couldn't see me because it was dark," Devon remarked before picking up the deer from the floor. "Here's your mother's knife, just make sure to wash it." He added before putting the knife into the little boy's hand.

He was now moving toward the house dragging the deer along with him while the three behind him just stared at him.

"Hey, is there anywhere we can set up a fire here?" He stopped to ask as soon as he got to the entrance to the house.

"Wait, I'll show you," Maya said before quickly running toward him.

The old man and his wife returned home to discover that there was a fire at the back of their home.

They quickly rushed worried that their children might have done something terrible but when they got there they suddenly realized that they had two teenagers spending the night with them.

"Wait, are they roasting something?" The woman uttered as soon as she saw that there was something hanging over the fire.

"Yeah, and that doesn't look like a small game." The old man said before he began to make his way to the area.

Devon was sitting in between the children on a smooth rock while Erina was busy preparing some ingredients on the other side of the fire.

The teenagers knew when the parents entered the area but the children were too immersed in watching the flames go up to even notice.

"What in the world is going on here?" The old man inquired as soon as he got close enough to the area.

"Father?" Bennet stuttered before quickly shooting his gaze up.

"Hello," Maya said before waving at her parents.

"Is that a deer?" The mother asked with her gaze on what was hanging over the fire.

"Oh, hey, old man and Mrs…."

"It's Sharon."

"Oh, hello, Mrs. Sharon."

He had his gaze on her for a while before slowly turning it back to the fire, something about her just reminded him of someone.

"He calls you old man, Jonathan?." Sharon chuckled before burying her face in her husband's shoulder as soon as Devon turned away from them.

It was pretty obvious that their children got most of their features from their mother, Maya was just a spitting image of her mother, brown long hair, green eyes, and a nice oval face.

Bennet on the other hand got most of his mother's features but compared to Maya it wasn't that much.

He had green eyes and most of the facial features except that his lips weren't thin and pink like her mother's and were a little plump and red like his father's lips.

Also, his hair wasn't brown and was black just like what his father had.

"So, you've finally decided to wake up, brat," Jonathan remarked before quickly turning his gaze to.

"Yeah, that was a pretty long nap." He replied before slowly placing his hand on the back of his head.

"Long nap? You were half dead, if it wasn't for your friend over there you may still be unconscious now because I don't think there's anyone in the village who knows how to do what she did to save you." Sharon articulated.

"Yeah, I know, Erina's a real lifesaver, I've always known that." He said before turning his gaze to her on the other side of the fire.

"So, how are you feeling now? Any discomfort?"

"No, I feel great."

"That's good." She replied with a smile. "I was waiting for you to wake up so that I could thank you for saving my husband's."

"Um….I don't think there's any need for that, I was only doing my job, he paid us after all."

"Yeah, but I'm still grateful to both of you for protecting him, you even got yourself seriously injured because of that, thank you."

"Well then, you're welcome," Devon muttered with a sigh before slowly turning his gaze back to the fire.

He had to get up from his seat now to turn the deer around with the help of the long stick it was tied on.

"So, um….how did you guys get your hands on a huge deer like this?"

"It was big brother, Devon, he said he was going outside to meet Miss. Erina and then when we came outside he was just dragging it in from the bush." Maya jabbered.

"He also found your knife, Mother, it's what he used to kill the deer," Bennet said before raising the knife which was looking clean now.

"Wow."

"So, you woke up, went outside, and killed a deer to provide meat for my family tonight." The old man expressed with his eyes fixed on Devon who was back in his seat now with Maya back to relaxing on his body.

"It wasn't my intention to get meat for your family, old man, I just saw the deer and killed it but still, you're welcome."

"Hey, what are you on about? Who said I was going to thank you?"

"Jonathan."

"Anyway, I think I need to sit down."

"Don't worry, I'll go get one for you." Sharon volunteered before quickly rushing out of the area.

The place suddenly fell into a quick state of silence with the crackling of the flames and the chirps of crickets being the only thing that could be heard in the background.

Jonathan had a couple of thoughts going through his mind now as he focused his gaze on the flames.

'This boy is a very strange one, I don't even remember how we got out of that situation, all I remember was him asking for my hands before everything suddenly turned dark. Anyway, I should be grateful that he managed to get us out of that situation whatever way it was through.'

After Sharon returned, he helped Erina bring the deer down from the fire and then they cut it into smaller pieces before making a special soup with them.

Devon wanted to help but Maya just wouldn't let him go.

After they were done preparing the dish it was served to everyone and they all ate to their fill.

Maya fell asleep on Devon's body after she finished eating her meal and now the youngster had his hand on her head as he gazed into the sky.

Bennet on the other hand was with Erina on the other side and it looked like he was still trying to finish his food.

Jonathan was on the far end near the house with his Sharon who had a bright smile on her face.

"Those two are a wholesome pair don't you think?" She said before turning her gaze to her husband.

"Yeah." The old man replied with a nod.

'Hmm, that's true, I haven't really taken anything that's not mine since today.'

As soon as that thought popped up in his mind, he slowly turned his gaze toward the other houses making up the village.

There was a lot of smoke going up in different parts of the area to show that most of the households were still up.

'Interesting.'
