Chương 8: Chapter Eight A Not So Warm Welcome
She walked inside the college, not knowing where registration was taking place, something, attracted her attention, it was the schools large notice board it had programmes, extracurricular activities, and a large map of the school.
She walked towards it and saw a lot of students surrounding it and taking pictures of it with their smart phones, she didn't have a smart phone or a camera so she had to wait till they were finished.
She looked at the map and located the registration building, she also memorized the location of other buildings and left. She started walking and soon located the registration building and she entered, there were different venue for different levels, she soon located the freshman registration center, A woman was registering them and she recognized the woman, it was Mrs Peggy. they exchanged pleasantries and She was successfully registered as a student she was given a dorm key, a laptop, a bag and an account was created for her. She was also given a meal ticket, that was going to be renewed every month, she had finally become a student of O.V.M.C.
She said goodbye to Mrs Peggy before leaving the registration building, Mrs Peggy specifically asked to be put as a registration officer for the freshmen because she wanted to see Mary again.
Using her photographic memory and asking questions, although no student wanted to help her, they were also busy getting settled, so they didn't want to be distributed by a farm girl with no family influence.
She successfully found her dorm room in the female dorms, although she was given some looks, she didn't care all she cared about was that she was now a student, and she had a laptop which she couldn't use now, but she would learn to use it.
She carried her bags joyfully, she didn't want to break the laptop, so she held it to her chest.
She found her room in the freshman dorm, it was room 205. she unlocked the door and entered, to see a girl already in the room sitting on the bed, it was her roommate Alicia.
She entered and was greeted with a warm welcome by Alicia and they exchanged pleasantries, she dropped her bags in the space for bags and started hanging her clothes when Alicia gave a loud laugh, she was laughing at Mary's vintage and old looking clothes, she was also sad for her because she knew Mary wouldn't survive in the college environment as a girl with such clothes, She even offered to lend Mary some of her old clothes that were out of season, but Mary declined.
She didn't care if people didn't talk to her or laugh at her, she was determined to be the best of the best Academically, Alicia also told her that there were many geniuses in the school.
She wasn't discouraged as her faith was as strong as ever, she finished packing and sat on the bed. The room was quite large, it had beds enough for two people, a study room, a game center, two couches and a mini library.
She sat down, and Brought her phone out, Alicia again mocked her and now, for sure she knew that Mary would be a social outcast.
She wasn't bothered, she dialed her parents number and called, it rang for a long time with no one picking, until finally someone picked the call, it was her brother, her mom collected the landline and they began speaking, she told her mom of her experience and the things that were given to her, she expressed to her mum how happy she was to be a student and her mother advised her to work hard and make it.
They talked for hours till her father came, and she talked to her father, at around 5pm the call was ended, she had been talking for four hours and Alicia had left the room.
She was hungry so she went to the cafeteria for lunch, it was free so she could order anything . She ordered Mac n Cheese, and a bottle of water, everyone else in the cafeteria ordered expensive drinks and foods and she was the only one to order so cheaply.
She got back to her room, and Alicia was back, they were girls so they talked about dreams and where they were from, Alicia was a successful business man's daughter from Clinton brook state, Mary didn't want people to know she was from old town, so she lied that she was from Kennedy river state.
She slept at about 9pm after saying her prayers, and switching off her phone Although Alicia was still wide awake texting on her phone.
It was the next day and at about 8am, all students were awoken by a loud siren.
Mary had woken up, had her bath in the private bathroom and dressed up in her red top and black skirt, she had done her hair and tied it in a knot by 7am so she wasn't bothered, her parents had taught her to always prepare ahead.
Alicia woke up with a loud banging noise in her head, she had slept at 2am so she was still tired, when she saw that Mary was ready, she was shocked.
