Chương 27: Chapter 27: Investigating The Infected Zone
Aliyah and I kept walking towards the infected area of this town. Jiro said something about how the illness was similar to how Ogre blood affects people when the meat of an Ogre is uncooked.
That probably means that the water is poisoned by some type of similar blood if not an Ogre's. That is the most reasonable conclusion because there is a river that flows into the town in the very back of the infected area.
Aliyah and I could probably split up and check out different areas of the zone and then meet up to discuss what we found.
-[In Front of the Sealed Off Infected area]-
"Hey! You two! Go no further than where you are standing! Past this point is an infected area and is thus quarantined and off limits!" A guard yelled from the front of a bridge over the town's river.
I then kept walking and said back, "We have permission from the mayor to enter the area and investigate the illness and how it could have started!"
At this time I pulled out my gloves and mask and put them on. Aliyah noticed that I put them on and so she put on hers.
The guard walked up to us and said, "Do you think I would really believe that?"
I guess the guard can't really believe the word of two random people making that type of claim.
Aliyah then said, "Hold on" as she reached into her pocket and pulled out a small piece of paper.
The guard took the piece of paper and read the contents of it. He then handed back the paper to Aliyah and said, "I'm sorry for doubting you. Please, go ahead. But be safe."
Aliyah then nodded her head and we continued walking towards the bridge connecting the two halves of the town.
I looked up at her and said, "What's with the piece of paper? I didn't see anyone give you that earlier."
Aliyah then replied, "After you left the mayor's office he gave me a piece of paper and sent me off. You didn't look back so I guess you didn't notice it."
I then said, "I guess I didn't. I was thinking about somethings at that moment so I was distracted."
Aliyah then continued walking and I did the same.
I looked around us and noticed that nobody was outside the surrounding area. I guess this is where the infected area begins.
We got off of the bridge and I said, "It might be a good idea to split up and look around this area. It covers more ground and is faster."
Aliyah's face became slightly worried. She then said, "Are you sure that's what you want? It may be faster, yes. But if you get into some kind of trouble I won't be able to help you unless I can hear you call for help."
I already knew that. It may be a little worrisome for me to go by myself but this is something I decided is best.
I then said, "I'll be fine! I know some offensive magic and I've become a bit stronger than before. I'll be fine. Don't worry about me too much!"
Aliyah then said, "Alright. We can split up. But if you need help, do not hesitate to call for me! I don't want you to get hurt like you did when we saved Nova from those wolves back then."
I nodded my head. Nova was soundly asleep on my head at the moment but I think it might be best to take him down from there.
I began to walk further into the infected area and Aliyah went further in the zone and then branched off from me.
I brought Nova down into my arms and he kept on sleeping. What a lazy bastard, heh.
I looked around me and noticed that all of the windows of the surrounding houses and buildings were all shut. Same with the doors.
There wasn't anyone outside except for a single wolf type beastwoman who was sitting on some stairs in front of a home about ten metres away.
I walked up to her and she noticed me get closer. She then stood up and said, "Don't get too close now. It's not safe. I shouldn't even be outside."
I then said, "Hello, ma'am. I'm here today to try and ask you some questions about the illness. Would you be willing to comply?"
The woman then put her hand up in front of her and pointed at me. She then said, "Only if you stay over there. I don't want a child like you catching the illness. It's not affected me very much but there is still a big chance you'll catch it."
I nodded my head and stopped in my tracks. I then asked the woman, "For starters, may I inquire to know thy name?"
The woman then said, "I guess? My name is Sara."
I then said, "Alright, Miss Sara. May I ask if you remember when this random illness appeared in this area, or when it affected you?"
Sara then said, "The illness appeared exactly 13 days ago now. I've only had it since yesterday. The symptoms haven't affected me as hard as they did my husband and son."
Maybe she has a good immune system?
I then said, "What are the symptoms of those affecting you, your husband, and your son?"
Sara placed her hand on her chin and said, "For me alone it's only a minor cough, congestion, and slight nausea. My husband and son both have diarrhea, extreme nausea, a headache, and congestion."
I don't know what the illness could be but it sounds like a viral type? With the symptoms listed from her and her family it seems like it is a viral infection.
I then said, "Okay, next question. Are your husband and son beastmen, human, elvish, or demon?"
Sara then replied, "My husband is human and my son is a half beast."
I'm thinking it could maybe affect humans more than beastmen. It could also be that Miss Sara just has a really strong immune system.
I guess I should move on to the next question. I then said, "Do you know anyone else that has contracted the illness?"
Miss Sara then said, "Yes. I do. My friend's wife contracted the illness about a week ago. I've heard a few things about how her condition is at the moment by talking to that very friend. We're neighbours so I can simply talk to them through the second story window"
I then asked, "May I know what race your friend and their wife is?"
Miss Sara nodded her head as a reply. "My friend is an elf named 'Tolan' and his wife is a human."
So then here comes the next question. I then asked, "How is each of their conditions? Tolan and his wife."
Miss Sara then said, "Well...Tolan is doing fine enough to do daily things like cleaning. But his wife is bedridden from the illness. Her condition has gotten better since when she first contracted the illness but it's not much better than it was."
So that makes my hypothesis most likely to be true. The illness can be contracted by all races but it affects humans the most.
I could probably go and tell Jiro and the mayor about my hypothesis but I don't feel like I have enough evidence to head back. I guess I can I check the place I should have in the first place.
I bowed my head down and said, "Thank you for your time, Miss Sara. I will now be going on my own way to find out more about this illness. Thank you for the information!"
Sara smiled and said, "Any time, kid. Can I at least get your name?"
I guess it wouldn't hurt to tell her that. I then said, "Pearl. My name is Pearl."
Sara then said, "Pearl, huh? All right then. Be safe, Pearl."
I waved goodbye to Miss Sara and began to walk back to the river. The only place for me to go now is upstream. Let's not waste any more time.
