Chương 9: Let this man cook

So as it turns out the room of requirement cannot transfigure the ingredients required for cooking, so Deacon needed to take his own into the room.

Which he did immediately after getting out of the room.

"Oddment! I need a kilo of pork and one of every vegetable you have!"

*Pop!*

In front of his eyes, the very ingredients appeared, as if spawning from existence, and he would have believed it to be that way if it weren't for the fact that he saw a tiny malformed figure drop off his ingredients with a frown on it's face.

He then proceeded to again walk past the tapestry three times.

One.

Two.

Three.

The door appeared in a flash, and so Deacon went in, ready for some food and freedom.

*Click*

*Creak*

In front of him lay the same room he was in before, now with a few slight changes. There was now a functioning sink and plates.

He checked his ingredients. There was a kilo of pork, onions, carrots, potatoes, garlic, and a few more but these ones took priority in his mind.

He took a pan and laid it on top of the stove, setting it to high heat, and waiting for the pan to get hot. In the meanwhile, he took out the pork, it seemed to be pork shoulder, and cut it into small chunks. There was a decent amount of fat on the pork so he removed that and decided to use it at a later moment.

*Sizzle*

The lean pork meat was placed on the pan and left to cook, not all the fat was removed so the aroma of bacon and grease permeated the room, Deacon was sure that this scent would stick to his clothes so he would have the room conjure him a new pair of robes. Whilst the pork cooked on the pan he lowered it to medium-low heat in order for it to fully render.

He placed a pot on the stove, setting it to medium heat, and threw the pork fat in to melt and brown. Once rendered it would be very good in combination with the veggies he was about to chop up.

Turning to the chopping board, he took the onion and diced it up, it was pretty large for an onion so it would without a doubt feed him well, his eyes pricked with tears as the onions made him cry a little. The carrot was peeled and cut into sticks. The potato was also peeled but cut up as well.

Among the ingredients he had there was also a tomato and that would pair nicely with the dish...

"Your cooking expertise is shown, your drive to survive is lower than your drive to enjoy."

Rude.

The tomato was peeled and tossed into the fat which had rendered almost completely. The pork on the pan was cooked very nicely so he took it off the heat and let it cool down a little. The tomato was softening up inside the pot and once he bashed it with a wooden spoon it had turned into tomato sauce, with the addition of the onions there was a very nice and thick aroma that would turn anyone into a drooling mess because of how good it smelled.

Hell, he could feel the saliva build up in his mouth, that's how good it smelled. Seeing how the onions began to brown and soften after being cooked in the pot he added the carrot and potato along with a few cups of water to evenly cook it all.

He knew the stew would be ready once half the water he put had boiled away so he had some time to kill. He feared that if he left the room then all his progress in making the dish would disappear so he took out a small book from his robes that he took from the library.

"The Forbidden Human"

It was a nice novel about a lamb that was transfigured into a man via alchemy. This lamb supposedly became a great ruler over the Celtic druids and was considered one of the closest beings to nature. Since its death, every spring equinox the world would mourn its loss, trees would weep, winds would fall, and the very clouds drip with sorrow.

Intensely engaging but some of the power of the lamb made no sense. It apparently transformed a bird into a rabbit yet it still laid eggs, it could make the earth reverse its rotation, and could somehow take stars out of the night sky and eat them.

As he finished reading a chapter, he took a look at the pot and saw that the water had almost entirely boiled away which was a problem, but it seemed the carrots had become tender and the potatoes were soft and didn't lose their form.

He took the pot and poured its contents inside the pan with the pork in it which had cooled down completely. The dish wasn't how he would prefer it to be and it was all because he got overly engrossed in reading the novel in his robe. Nonetheless, as he stirred the ingredients one last time he saw he had made himself a very nice pork stew.

The spoons, which had organized themselves into a shaky tower, all leaped from their position and returned themselves to the box full of silverware, all except one which flew into Deacon's hand, ready to fulfill its purpose.

"There it is, a brave little soldier, at your command, ready to be used."

Damn, this stew was good, the tomato sauce had lost a bit of its taste but it was present in every bite he took, the potato melted in his mouth at the slightest push, and the carrot was soft and tender. The pork added a whole new depth to the stew, adding a bit of chewiness in every bite. The pork fat could barely be tasted.

'Wonder what repercussions eating this daily would bring"

"Repercussions? With a high risk of JOY? With a mild chance of delicious? Everybody knows making good food means you are a god in human flesh"

The voice was going crazy today, there was barely any logic in that sentence just pure and uncontrollable energy, with the same deep voice from before. It was as if the voice had suddenly become an addict going through withdrawal.

He had this mild premonition that this was not the greatest thing to have in the bakc of his head...
