Chương 28: Chapter 28 Confrontation Between A&M

Alicia headed downstairs and took a sharp turn into the bathroom. She slammed the door shut, plopped herself on the toilet seat, and buried her face in her hands to take a breather. After a minute or so, she remembered what she had to do and whipped out her phone to text Louis: "Paige says come down and slice the cake already."

A few more moments passed before she stood up, pulled the door open, and sauntered over to the sink to rinse her hands. As she stared at her reflection, she noticed how pale she looked. She faked a smile to make herself look more alive.

The sound of click-clacking heels grew louder and louder until a petite figure walked in. It was Madelyn, wearing the blue starry skirt.

"We meet again, Alicia," she smirked.

Alicia responded with a casual "psh" and grabbed a towel to dry her hands.

Madelyn strutted around her and stood in front of the mirror, whipping out a lipstick from her posh handbag. As she dabbed on some rouge, she kept glancing at Alicia through the reflection and snidely remarked, "That dress is alright, but did you get it off ebay?"

Alicia paused for a beat and quipped with a sly grin, "Nah, my mother-in-law designed it. Miss Monroe, you might want to check your eyesight if you can't tell the difference."

"Is that so?" Madelyn feigned surprise and swiveled around to face Alicia, "It may be Aunt Paige's design, but it still smells like cheap crap when you wear it."

Alicia raised her chin and pointed at the mirror, saying, "Look carefully. I'm taller, better looking, more talented than you. And as long as you're here, I dare say nothing else is the cheapest thing here."

"You!" Madelyn's face flushed with fury and she snapped her lipstick in half.

Alicia spun around and walked out, but she could still hear Madelyn's snotty voice behind her, "So what if you're hotter and more talented? My pops is more powerful than yours. In this crowd, having a good dad is everything. I'll snatch Louis away from you, just wait and see!"

Alicia's heart sank as she recalled Henry's words. It felt like a swarm of ants were crawling all over it, causing prickly and painful sensations.

She gripped her skirt tightly, turned to Madelyn, and shrugged. "You're the only one I've seen who are so proud of being a third party. Also, I hope your dad lives to be 200 and always has your back."

Madelyn seethed with rage and retorted, "I still have my brother!"

Alicia thought of Morris and smiled faintly, "Your brother has a good sense of morality. He might not be on board with your scheme. You might want to find some magic potion that'll keep your dad alive. Living each year as if it's your last."

With a resounding "BANG," Madelyn slammed the door shut in anger.

Alicia's smile gradually froze. She had won this argument, but this was meaningless, for she had already lost Louis.

No matter how hard she tried, having a good father was worth more than anything, even in a marriage.

By the time Henry and Louis came downstairs, Alicia had already regained her composure. She acted as if nothing had happened, singing Happy Birthday to Paige, blowing out candles, and cutting the cake with them.

After finishing the cake, Louis said to her, "Let Lucas take you home first. I'll be home later."

Alicia smiled and nodded, "Sure, take your time."

After saying goodbye to Paige, Alicia left the party and got into the car.

When they passed by a 24-hour pharmacy on the way, she asked Lucas to stop and bought a box of emergency contraception pills. She had sex with Louis last night, and she was ovulating. They hadn't used any protection.

Now was not the time for her to have a child, especially since Louis was undecided and might divorce her any day.

Since birth, Alicia had never experienced a father's love. She knew too well what it felt like to be lacking in love and didn't want her child to go through the same thing.

Back home, Alicia took one pill according to the instructions, washed it down with warm water, and left the box on the counter. The other pill would have to be taken in 12 hours.

She went upstairs and took a quick shower, brushed her teeth, and lay down in bed, but she couldn't fall asleep. Her mind was racing.

When it was almost midnight, Louis finally came home after drinking with his clients.

He changed into his slippers, unbuttoned his suit, hung it on the hanger, and froze when he saw the contraception pills on the counter.

He picked it up and looked at it, thinking, "She doesn't want to have my child."

Louis' gaze grew colder and colder. He picked up his phone and dialed Jaheer Birla's number.

Not long after, a lazy male voice came from the phone, "Bro, it's the middle of the night. What do you want?"

Louis asked without much emotion, "What does it mean when a woman refuses to have a child with her husband?"

Jaheer Birla, half-asleep and slow to react, said casually, "What else could it mean? This woman doesn't love her husband."

Louis's heart suddenly stopped, then he said flatly, "Got it." He hung up the phone, his face surprisingly calm, but his hand was clenched so tight that the phone was almost deformed.

For a long time, a few cold laughs escaped from his lips. He laughed at himself and thought, "I actually wanted to use a child to tie her down, to tie down a woman who doesn't love me."

He threw the phone on the table, took out a bottle of red wine, poured a full glass, and sat down on the sofa. He tilted his head back and took a big sip.

Thinking of Jaheer's words, he squeezed the glass in his hand, the veins on his hand bulging. Suddenly, there was a loud bang, and the glass shattered in his hand. The sharp pieces of glass cut his palm, but he didn't feel the pain.

Alicia, who had been unable to sleep, suddenly heard the clear sound of glass breaking downstairs. She shuddered and got out of bed, walked to the railing, and looked down. She saw Louis's right hand covered in dark red liquid, unable to tell whether it was wine or blood, and broken glass shards on the floor.

She hurriedly went to the cabinet, found the first aid kit, and headed downstairs. By the time she hurried down the stairs, Louis had already gone to the window to make a call.

His tall, slender figure stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, indifferent and heroic, his posture straight as a pine tree against the wind and snow. He was the kind of person who could bewitch you with just his back.

Alicia stopped and waited quietly for him to finish the call.

She heard Louis asking the other person, "Have they found the man who hurt Madelyn's hand?"

She didn't know what the other person said, but Louis suddenly got angry and yelled, "You idiots! How hard is it to find someone?! Go find him and don't come back until you do!"

Alicia froze, feeling a chill in her heart. She thought, He really cares about Madelyn. It's the middle of the night and he's still helping her find the culprit. And here I am, foolishly carrying the first aid kit to help him bandage his wounds. God, how stupid I am!

Alicia bent down and gently placed the first aid kit on the ground before turning to leave.

As she took a few steps away, she heard Louis's voice again from behind her, "Have they caught that Kithara yet?"
