Chương 55: Finding Zane

Edana and Slem were running through the town slowly, as Slem was taking the lead. After sending the knights away, they headed towards the church. Edana was going to head straight for the church, but Slem stopped her, saying they needed to go from another way if they didn't want to be caught. Edana agreed as she felt there would be cultists stationed on the main path to the church.

Edana was impressed with Slem, even if he was a child, he took her through the town efficiently, through paths where others would not see them. After running for a while, they reached towards the west of the church. "Let's hide here and see first!" Slem stopped and looked at Edana. Nodding, she hid together with Slem behind a wooden house.

Peeking their heads from the house, they could barely see the front gate of the church, which was towards their far north-east. "Where is everyone?" Edana looked around the church, but she couldn't find any cultists stationed anywhere. "I don't know! They're all there every time I come here!" Slem was also shocked by the situation.

Just as they were peeking, a black light appeared from the south and hit the church. *BOOM* A loud explosion occurred and the top half of the church fell down on the ground, debris flying all over the town. "Look out!" Edana grabbed Slem and rolled to the side. *BOOM* The wooden house they were just hiding behind also got hit by a debris.

"Wow! That was dangerous!" Slem exclaimed. Edana looked at him for a moment before peeking towards the church gate again. After some moment, two people came out from the gate. Edana widened her eyes when she saw the person who came out. "Zaros!" Slem exclaimed. "Brother Zane must be inside! Let's hurry!" Slem tugged on Edana's jacket, but she was still busy looking at Zaros, clenching her teeth. "Haah.." She sighed and looked at Slem. "Let's go.."

Just as they were about to move, Edana felt chills down her spine. She jerked her head towards the gate of the church and saw someone else exiting it. The person exiting the church looked calm, but the atmosphere instantly turned heavy when he appeared. "Uuu..." Slem tightened his grasp of Edana's jacket when the Saint appeared.

After he looked at the destroyed top of the church, he furiously shouted something and headed back inside the church, with every cultist following him.

"Let's go... Where should we enter from?" Edana looked at Slem. Wiping the tears from his eyes, Slem pointed towards the west of the church. "Let's go from there!"

They headed inside the church from the west, where there was a small crack in the wall. Slem turned into a slime and entered through it, leaving Edana alone outside. "Come on!" Edana could hear Slem's voice through the crack, beyond the church wall. Shaking her head, Edana swiftly climbed the wall using the cracks and jumped over.

They reached a beautiful garden, with stone fountains and plants covering the walls. "There!" Slem pointed towards a door and walked towards it. "Be careful!" Edana whispered and followed Slem. "Don't worry, It's very quiet here." Slem opened the door and entered. "Now where would brother Zane be..."

Edana could only follow Slem while he went through the corridors, opening each and every door they saw. After going through almost every door on the west side of the church, they finally reached the chapel. "Hmm..." Their gaze first landed on the broken hole where the gate used to be. "...What happened." But when they were about to head towards the hole, they heard some sound from the opposite direction, towards the altar.

"There!" Slem pointed towards the altar, shifting Edana's focus at the end of his finger, where there was a door on the wall. "There are sounds coming from there!" Slem ran towards the door. "Wait!" Edana could only follow Slem, afraid that he would run into danger. As soon as they entered the door, both Slem and Edana widened their eyes in shock.

*Bleghhh* Both of them started to barf out everything from their stomach at the sight of the flesh covered hall. "What..." But they didn't have the time to focus on the hall, as they saw two people fighting in the middle of the hall. "Brother Zane!" Slem wiped his mouth and exclaimed.

Just then, Zane was tossed on the ground, the person beating him up standing on top of him. Edana dashed towards them quickly and used her <Arcane>. 'Night Flame Ball' She conjured up a blue flame ball on her hand and threw it towards the enemy, just as he was about to strike Zane with his scaled claws.

*Bam* The fireball hit the back of the enemy. "AAAAGH" He cried out in pain, using his scaled arms to douse the fire on his back. Slowly turning towards Edana, he widened his blood-shot eyes. "Sacred Order? How'd you get here?"

"No no no no....." he started muttering. "Master.... no you couldn't have..." As the Saint had gone outside to deal with the Sacred Order, Alec assumed his master had lost, seeing Edana inside the hall donning her Sacred Order uniform.

While he was distracted, Zane had sneakily reached Edana and Slem's side. "Brother Zane!" Slem hopped towards him in joy. Stroking his head, Zane looked towards Edana. "You...."

Edana scoured him from top to bottom. "You're... okay..." She looked at him with guilt on her face. "Why are you looking at me like that?" Zane looked at Edana with a weird look on his face.

The look of guilt suddenly turned into that of fury. "Bastard!" She turned away from him, feeling her guilt was wasted. Zane shrugged and he too, turned towards Alec.

Still muttering to himself, he had now fallen to the ground on his knees, grabbing his hair with his scaly hands and tears and snot streaming down his face.

"Why is he like that?" Edana asked Zane, who was focused on Alec. "Did you guys kill the Saint?"

"....Saint???" Edana widened her eyes. "The cult has a Saint??..." She was shocked out of her mind.

"No?" Zane inferred from her reaction. "He thinks you guys finished off the Saint." He took a fighting stance. "Be ready... Something's changed..." Zane could feel the atmosphere around Alec changing, and so could Edana.

As both of them readied themselves, with Slem on the back making a cute fighting stance, Alec slowly raised his head and looked towards them.

"You...You bastards!!!" He started screaming. "Give me back my master! Bring back my light!" He stood up and arched his back, his skin slowly tearing off his body and falling to the ground. The parts where the skin fell off were slowly being replaced.
