At the Ecruteak Gym lecture hall, Cain finally used the "Sludge Bomb" TM.
This time, a Muk took on the role of "lecturer" in the demonstration.
Sludge Bomb and Shadow Ball are both explosive projectile moves, so their methods of use have certain similarities, but Sludge Bomb focuses on the power of poison-type energy.
After watching the Technical Machine, Gastly had the method imprinted in its mind.
Back on the training field, Morty, Raikou, and Fantina had become increasingly proficient in their newly learned techniques. Fantina ignored Cain's arrival.
"Gastly, try secreting poison using your poison core first," Cain said, unconcerned about the others, and found an area to start training.
Seeing the change in Gastly's appearance, Morty was surprised and asked, "Cain, why does your Gastly look different from before? What kind of coloration is this? Has it mutated?"
"I just activated its poison attribute, that's all," Cain replied, still observing Gastly's movements.
Morty nodded and didn't ask any more questions. He had been familiar with Gastly since he was a child and had read various related books, but he had never heard of activating the poison attribute. Gastly was indeed recorded in books as having a poison attribute, but it was unable to learn any poison-type moves naturally.
The discovery that Gastly might have a poison attribute was due to its vulnerability to psychic types, which led to further research and conjecture. The number of poison moves it could learn was even fewer than some non-poison type Pokémon, and their power was far inferior to its ghost-type moves. As a result, Gastly's additional attribute was often overlooked, and many people had forgotten that it was weak to psychic types, which led to significant losses.
Morty, who was already interested in ghost-type Pokémon, was eager to learn more and focused his attention on Cain's Gastly.
Gastly activated its poison core, and soon, poison dripped from its fangs. As Gastly had absorbed the life essence of a Swalot's poison to activate its poison core, its poison was almost identical to Swalot's. When the poison dripped onto the ground, it caused corrosion. The intensity of Swalot's poison ensured that Gastly's poison attribute wouldn't go to waste.
Seeing Gastly secrete poison, Morty was extremely surprised. "Cain, can you tell me how this was done?"
"Just stimulate Gastly's body with poison-type moves.Unfortunately Gastly will suffer, and it takes at least a day and a night," Cain had already prepared a response for Morty. This method could indeed activate the poison core, but the success rate wasn't high, and the toxicity wouldn't be very strong. Telling him wouldn't hurt, and it might even earn himself some gratitude.
Morty listened as if he had found a treasure.
With Gastly now able to secrete poison, training in Sludge Bomb could begin.
Purple poison energy began to condense, driven by the poison core. Gastly's own poison mixed into the Sludge Bomb. Since Gastly's ghost-type energy was so powerful, the Sludge Bomb couldn't reach the same level of concentration as Shadow Ball.
Every Pokémon has a limit to how effectively it can use a particular move, and to surpass that limit, external assistance was needed.
The use of Sludge Bomb left the entire training field in a sorry state, with corrosion chipping away at the rocky ground.
Cain was still satisfied with the effectiveness of Gastly's poison attribute, even though it was considered a weak poison-type Pokémon. With the help of Ditto, the best training partner, Gastly's training progressed
The TM moves of the three members of the team were practiced for five full days, and it could be said that they had completely mastered them. Cain didn't waste their time any further, knowing that continuous training could be monotonous and that real combat exercises were needed to consolidate their moves.
Yan evaluated the four members' use of their newly learned moves and expressed satisfaction. He was curious about Cain's Gastly's changes, and when he asked, Cain attributed them all to his deceased father. Yan couldn't verify the claim, so he left it at that.
At the third level of the Brass Tower, Cain and his team challenged the Duskull legion led by the wandering Dusclops for the second time, but Cain only did so to consolidate Gastly's skills.
Entering without a plan made it impossible to pass.
The other three team members, who had just learned new moves, wanted to show off their abilities, and they were all full of confidence.
However, facing the Duskull Spirit's Will-O-Wisp combined with the Hex tactic, they lost. After challenging the tower for five days and entering ten times, they still hadn't succeeded.
Fantina was getting anxious, and the team leader was also distressed.
Raikou's objective wasn't focused on passing the challenge, so he didn't care much about the outcome.
Cain, on the other hand, gave it his all each time, always charging to the front with relentless and almost frantic attacks. Seeing Cain's performance, the team leader and Fantina were moved, and Fantina's previous anger towards Cain gradually dissipated.
However, their admiration was one-sided. Cain was only doing this to train Gastly in battle.
Moreover, in any battle, there was no room for slack, as casual negligence in ordinary times could lead to opportunities for the opponent during life-or-death fights.
On the sixth day, the team leader didn't directly lead the three members into the Brass Tower.
"We've challenged the tower for five days, a total of ten times, and the results have been the same every time. So, I think we should discuss some tactics. If we continue without any plan, I believe the outcome will remain the same," the team leader said.
Raikou appeared indifferent, not wanting to think about tactics.
Fantina was also very eager to pass the challenge, but she was indeed the weakest among the four and didn't have any good ideas.
At this point, the three team members turned their attention to Cain.
Cain didn't care whether they would pass the test or not. As long as he could make Gastly stronger, that was enough. After five days of continuous battles, the value of the training against the Duskull had diminished.
It was time to move on to the next level.
"Let's go," Cain said, glancing at Morty before walking into the Brass Tower.
Morty and Fantina followed, though they couldn't quite believe where Cain's confidence came from.
"You always love to show off," Raikou grumbled, walking last.
As the four of them entered the third level, the wandering Dusclops had already organized their formation. The solid fortress had become a nightmare in Morty and Fantina's hearts.
"How should we attack?" Morty asked.
"Split up and fight separately."
Cain's answer surprised the other three. The combined power of their four Pokémon wasn't enough to counter the Duskull army's Will-O-Wisp, so wouldn't fighting separately just make them die faster?
