Chương 51: Chapter 51: Last battle

When they came out of the darkness and stepped into the moon's light, it was then that the child knew how wrong he was about the kobolds.

"I guess the name Kobolds wasn't as fitting as I thought it was."

What appeared from the forest was not the bipedal and wolf-headed creatures he so expected.

"Werewolf would have been a better name."

What came out was a wolf, standing at a height of 1.5 meters. Its length was no different from how the usual kobolds usually were, but their size had more than doubled.

"I should have seen this coming; their magical ability was not regeneration or super strength, it was transformation."

More wolves of similar, if not greater, size came from the forest. standing right beside the first.

It was then that the child noticed that it was not a guardian he saw from the time vision; it was but a mere kobold transformed that he had seen. The child had once asked himself why the kobolds were not attacking even after a week had passed. He had thought that the reason they weren't was because they were waiting for the guardian to appear, but it seems he was wrong.

"They were waiting for the full moon. And now that I think about it, that night when I heard their howl for the first time, it was a full moon as well."

As the cloaking of 20 giant wolves appeared from the forest, the last one appeared. With its gray fur and a length of 1.7 meters, the child immediately recognized this transformed wolf as the kobold alpha from before.

"Awoo!"

"Awoo!"

"Awoo!"

All the wolves started howling at the full moon. Hearing their synchronized howl, the child could only lament at how unprepared he was. As he had only been waiting for one single guardian, he didn't expect to be battling with more than 20 giant wolves.

"Well, on the bright side, at least I no longer have to worry about the long-distance rock attacks."

After this thought crossed his mind, all the kobolds stopped howling and gazed at their enemy. The search light created by the child fell on their wolf-like bodies as they stood staring ahead.

Then they charged!

With the alpha at the front, all the wolves charged towards the child's fort. Looking intimidating, they crossed many meters in less than a second.

As these wolves approached and got closer by the second, the child and his goblins did not stay idle.

"Aim!" the child ordered. And all the crossbows put on top of the wall were readied and aimed at the sky.

"Shoot." With that said, the arrows in the crossbows were released. So they flew to the sky, making an attack on the incoming wolves.

Sho!

Sho!

Sho!

Arrows started raining down from the sky and fell to the ground. At first, the alpha scoffed at this, as the last time, these arrows did not pose much danger to them. But now, with the full moon powering them, there was no way the arrows would do anything. But suddenly...

"Awoo!"

A howl was heard from within the group. But unlike the majestic and domineering howl made by the wolves not long ago, this time it sounded more like a dying dog howl than anything else. It was then that the wolf noticed that these arrows were not the same as those from last time. They were large metal arrows specifically made to take down giant wolves. As the child was a bit cautious, he had more crossbows and arrows than necessary.

As he believed that the so-called guardian he was expecting would be really gigantic and very strong, he made a little extra just in case. And it seems like he has done well, as although these wolves weren't as large as the guardian he had expected and there were a little too many, these arrows were still effective.

Seeing more wolves getting injured by the stalling arrows, the alpha made a roar that sounded akin to a bark.

"Arrrggow!"

Who knew what the alpha told the other wolves, but freed by its roar, they ran much faster than before. So the wolves passed through the clearing much faster than the child thought. Even with the traps set and the arrows raining, the wolves arrived with minimal casualties. The greatest helpers in their charge were their instincts and reflex abilities.

Most of the traps laid by the gremlins were dodged, and the same could be said for the arrows. It could not be helped; as there aren't that many crossbows to begin with, a proper arrow rain was not possible. And even if there were, there wouldn't be enough hobgoblins to man them. And since the energy clash would stop any plans to automate them, he could only do as it is. As such, the wolves had more dodging room.

"Now that I think about it, I probably should have put more defenses on the gate," the child thought at that moment. But it was already too late. As the wolf alpha charged straight ahead at the gate.

Boom!

He crashed directly at the gate. Of course, the gate was able to hold on even after it was cashed in by the wolf alpha, but the stones holding it together weren't.

Chush!

Right at the edges, where the gate was tightly held, the force took effect. Destroying the edges holding the gate in place.

The slightly disfigured gate was flung a meter or two away. Making way for the large group of wolves to get in.

So the large group of wolves poured in. The wolf alpha was, of course, the first one to come in, so it was able to see why it was beyond the wall for the first time.

The place was very full, with lots of things around. There were a few rocks here and there, a few unknown large structures, weird square columns that were scattered around, and finally, a group of goblins.

The first thing the alpha, of course, set its eyes on was its enemy, which clustered to a far part of the wall only a few 20 or so meters away.

These goblins held rectangular shields that protected them from the sight of the wolves. Behind these shielded goblins were more goblins, only they weren't holding shields but bows and arrows. Behind those goblins was a tall, blue, luminous thing. On first sight, the wolf was perplexed at what it could be, as to this day it has never seen such a thing.

The alpah then turned its gaze towards a very large construct that stood high in the sky with the support of thick rock pillars. Much like the blue luminous thing and the few gizmos they found in the forest, it too was a novel thing. So for a moment, the alpha worried that these things could be an unwanted variable. But it was only for a moment.

Sho!

Sho!

Sho!

Suddenly, arrows flew from the group of goblins and attacked it.

Tuk!

Tuk!

But these arrows, unlike their larger counterparts, barely left a scratch. As the alpha's hind was much tougher than it would be on a non-full moon. So these multiple arrows clamoring to take their lives only managed to fuel the raging inferno that was lit up by the bright full moon.

"Woogh!"

With a resounding bark, the giant wolf alpha could no longer let these pesky creatures annoy it, so it jumped and rushed to take their lives away.

But the moment it took its second step...

crack!
