Chương 3: Chapter 3: Family
"We heard about the offer."
Veronica Patterson told her step daughter. She was seated in the sitting room with Fernanda, her daughter and Paige her step daughter. She sent for Paige after hearing about the temporary Job offer from her boyfriend.
"What offer?"
Paige asked. Veronica have never asked her to come to the house for nothing. It's always been to ask for money or money related issues which will still end with a request for money. So, she knew Veronica wanted money. But the problem was Paige didn't even have more money on her. She was barely surviving. Her step mum and sister have refused to do anything to help the family. Since the death of her father, she's practically been the only one cathering for the family and upkeep of the home.
Veronica have always threatened to sell their family home if she didn't give them money. Their home was the only property her father left for them. It reminds Paige of her dear Father. The house held memories of her Childhood and the little memory she had of her late mother. So, she didn't want the house sold. She has always dreamt of getting married to a good man and moving very far away from her step mum and their baggages and finally giving up the house for them.
"The job offer you got at Yardstin." Veronica replied adjusting herself in the sofa.
"Who told you about that?" She asked frowning.
"Your lousy loquacious Boyfriend of course."
Came the nonchalant replied. Fernanda gave out a soft laughter at her mother's description of a Paige's boyfriend.
"What's so funny Fe? Maybe you should laugh some more. Since we're having a free concert."
Paige shot at her step sister. Who for the first time in a while didn't talk back at her. Rather, she kept mute and a straight face. Of course, paige was so angry. She only told her boyfriend Stefan last night. How come he was able to tell her step mother already. And why did he even tell them. Does this mean that he's been telling on her all these while. Paige thought to herself.
"Anyway, we made a list of our needs. It was much, but we were able to summarize it in a page. Your Boyfriend said you'll be paid $2,000 each month. So we were able to curtail our needs to a total of $4,000 for the three months you won't be at home."
Veronica said and handed her a sheet of paper. A tear fell down from Paige's eye. She wasn't crying because of the Long list her step mum gave to her. She was crying because of Stefan. He had told them exactly what she told him. She hid the real amount she was going to be paid from him for obvious reasons. She was internally thanking her stars for following her instincts.
"Alright, is that all?" Paige asked.
"Not really. Your sister finally decided to start up a business. Since the university ain't favouring her."
