Chương 31: 31
After some months of dating, Vina and Albert decided to settle down. During their courtship they agreed never to allow any third party in their marriage. This was because her mum Dr Faith told her how she lost her husband before death took him away finally from her because she confided in her sister-in-law who acted like a friend but eventually ruined her ten years marriage with her husband and ever since, Dr Faith had been a single mother for twenty years and she refused to remarry after her husband died.
Albert who was well known as a sex maniac, notorious and chronic cassonova proved the world wrong by showing that he was the type of man every lady would want to spend her life with. He is handsome, well to do, sometimes gentle even though he is a very jealous guy. Vina didn't consider any of those things as a big challenge seeing how much he loved her and any man will do anything to protect the woman he loves. Vina recounted how he protected her when some guys wanted molesting her sexually and how he stood up for her when his friends were against her then she smiled sweetly.
Their first fight happened on their wedding day. Albert has never been this angry in all the years they dated and even when he was angry, he was still polite until their wedding day.
The wedding was so colourful and the attendance was awesome with great number of friends in attendance.
Vina's ex Philip was in also in attendance. They couldn't get married not because they quarreled but because they were still little kids back then and Vina's mum lived a very rough life which made Vina ran away from the house to the orphanage. Philip and Albert had met twice as Vina organized the first meeting and the second was just coincidental and Albert was aware of all that happened between Vina and Philip because she told him.
Immediately after the presentation of gifts at the reception, Albert dragged Vina behind the hall angrily. Why did you let that guy hug you chest to chest? Albert asked her furiously and Vina was dumb for seconds trying to figure out who he was referring to.
"You claimed he was your ex but yet, you allowed him hug you that way? Albert screamed distracting her thought and that was when she realized that he was referring to Philip.
"But baby, many people including male and female hugged me, so why are you feeling bad about Philip's hug? Vina queried in surprise. But Albert landed her a hot slap on the face. Vina couldn't believe that Albert will ever raise his hands on her. She raise her face up and stared at his eyes.
"Albert, did you just slap me? Vina asked in surprise
"Yes I did and I will do it again" Albert replied before rushing out of his sight and Vina ran to a room hoping to meet Ruby Because she was the only person she could talk to.
"No one should see me shedding tears on my wedding day" Vina said consoling herself as tried to hold back her tears until she saw Ivory, her chief bride's maid. Immediately Ivory noticed the tears, she held her close to her chest
"Vina what happened to you and why are you crying? Ivory asked with concern written all over her face
"I am calling off this marriage before this crowd disperse, Vina said to Ivory" but she begged her not to do such a thing.
"How can you call off a marriage that was done just few hours ago" Ivory challenged her.
"There's no marriage without its up and down moreover you just started the journey so we can handle this together my darling sister. Wipe away your tears because they will soon call for couple's dance so let's go" Ivory said dragging her back to the podium but the moment she saw Albert, she hated him immediately because he turned her happiest day into a sorrowful one in just a jiffy.
"The guest won't even understand if I call the wedding off" Vina said and tried pretending like nothing happened. She got to the podium to dance a romantic dance with a man who just slapped her and his face didn't show any remorse. He danced like nothing happened and her mind began to fast forward about what will happen next if she continues in this marriage?
Everyone present thought she was happy but she was the most unhappy woman on the day of her wedding.
Vina nursed the idea of running away after the wedding but that will bring her to a public ridicule, so she changed her mind.
After they wedding, they were driven straight to their hotel room but Vina had pleaded with Ivory her chief's bride maid to be around the hotel so she made a room reservation and joined them an hour later.
"I didn't say a word to Albert for all the time we stayed in the hotel and I refused to join him on the bed"
At about 11pm, he came to join her on the couch in the hotel room and his face said it all because he wanted sex. His hand went down her jeans zip but she hit it.
"What are you trying to do" Vina asked him.
"To make love to my wife of course Albert answered with confidence.
"And who is your wife? the woman you slapped on her wedding day or who? Vina asked violently removing his hand off her body. He struggled with her attempting to rape her but she began to scream on top of her voice until Ivory and some staffs of the hotel already gathered at the door.
Albert held me down with his right hand as he rained blows on her with his left hand then the hotel manager forced the door opened and rescued her from his hands but none of them understood what was going on except Ivory.
The attendants knew they just wedded but they couldn't understand why making love will be an issue between a just wedded couple.
Ivory took her to her room and locked the door. She came back at about 12:23am after a chat with Albert and she came to beg on his behalf but Vina had made up her mind not to allow him touch her so she slept in Ivory's room that night.
The next morning before 7am, The pastor and some women leaders of their church were already at the hotel room because Albert had invited them. He told them how Vina refused him from making love to her but he didn't include the part where he slapped her.
"Why can't you people just give me opportunity to say a word instead of insisting that i must give my body to my husband" Vina said angrily and they began insulting her. They pleaded with Albert not to be angry and insisted they won't leave until they commence their first conjugal obligation.
"That been said, I want you both to go inside and act like real husband and wife while we wait at the reception" the Pastor said
Sluggishly Vina went in with Albert as instructed and he made love to her against her wish making himself happy and satisfied but Vina, more bitter and hurt.
After dressing up, he went to the reception to call them in and they inquired if he has made her a woman and he said yes. "They all smiled but their smile went into my heart like an arrow of fire. My heart ached like it will pull out of my chest as they counseled us on the importance of sex in marriage and left then I began to ask myself if that was how Richard treats Ruby or does Julius treats Janet in the same manner?" Vina wondered.
That was the beginning of Vina's sorrow. Anytime she see's Albert, she sees a monster and her bitterness grew to fear and depression but Ivory kept encouraging her with the oath "for better for worse.
"Ivory , do you think I will ever be happy in this marriage just like my sisters?" Vina questioned Ivory.
Vina never enjoyed her marriage from the onset with Albert as he kept taking advantage of her. She developed a massive hatred especially for the pastor because he contributed in playing a role of encouraging sexual abuse.
"I feel like hurting the so called man of God for causing me so much pain without being able to discern If i was bitter. If he was a true father, he should have known or at least given me the opportunity to state my reason why I denied my husband sex on our wedding day but he instead was judgmental and insensitive" Vina complained amid tears.
"Albert kept abusing me sexually but there was no one to talk to. Ivory who is my closest friend doesn't understand my pains and all she wanted was to protect the oath "for better for worse". I can't possibly tell my sister's about it even Richard his brother about Albert's recent behavior, his friends are not cool with me to even understand my plight and my mom loves Albert too much and she believe's him so I wouldn't want to create a different impression about him to her.
Vina was living in pain everyday and cried regularly but no one saw her tears. Albert makes love to her anytime he likes and it doesn't matter if she's interested or not. Her health meant nothing to him if he wanted to have sex with her and he could do it as many times as he had erection. Vina began to lose her mind like she was going crazy and while Albert was gaining weight, she continued becoming lean everyday.
Vina tried telling Richard of the situation and maltreatment Albert has been metting out on her but she remembered their agreement of "no third party" so she made up her mind to forgive and move on. On a faithful day she decided to have a heart to heart conversation with him when he comes back from work. She prepared his best meal and await his return
He came back as usual and ordered Vina to meet him in the bedroom.
"Good evening dear" Vina greeted him with soft words for the first time in the history of their marriage but his urge for sex didn't let him notice her bright countenance and soft words. He ordered her to remove her clothes which she did immediately. but this time, he doesn't want normal sex, he wanted an anal sex.
"What are you doing Albert" Vina asked jumping up to look straight to his eyes until tears began to drop from her eyes. His eyes were red the same way they used to be anytime she tried to resist him.
I quickly cooperated or else he would beat me up. For over 40 minutes, he kept struggling with her until it enterd her anus without breakthrough. The pain was more severe than the day she was deflowered as he handled her mercilessly until she passed out. Some minutes later Vina came to consciousness and made up her mind to leave for her life. She couldn't sleep throughout the night and she was thinking of where to run to probably a place where Albert will never reach her.
Before he left for work the following morning, he came to meet Vina on the bed to apologize for what he did to her last night. Her husband has never apologize for any wrong before but she was surprised and confused either to forgive him or leave him.
Vina has not been talking to Ivory for a very long time because of her position on "for better for worse". But this time she needed to talk to someone before she die. Vina picked her phone and put a call through to Ivory, telling her that she needs to see her urgently.
"Vina, i hope you are okay? Ivory asked in a concern voice.
"I'm fine but you need to come before I do something terrible to myself.
"I will be on my way right now, she said and they ended the call.
About an hour later, Ivory visited Vina's house and they began conversing, she narrated her experience to her and how her husband attempted doing an anal sex with her. She was quiet for like three minutes and tears began to roll down her cheeks but they held each other and wept like babies.
"I'm a bit relieved after the long sob but my future is deem" Vina lamented as she told Ivory of her plan to run away but Ivory discouraged her and encouraged her instead to stay and fight for her marriage. She brought out her flash drive and copied a film titled "Battle" on her system which they watched together and she was encouraged.
After she left, Vina became angry with herself because she didn't keep to the useless vow of "no third party".
Ivory her friend has now known everything that happened in her marriage which she might use it against me someday. Vina felt insecured because of the level of information she has about her marriage so she made up her mind never to inform her about anything concerning her marriage again.
"I will handle my problems myself afterall, she's not married so she's not qualified to counsel me about marriage" Vina said encouraging herself.
Two days later, my Mum Dr Faith called me to inform me that she was in town
"Baby, I'm at the park so send me your house address or send someone to come pick me up.
"I can't believe mum left her place of work at Lagos and travelled all the way to come see me without informing me.Vina said as she quickly dressed up and took a chattered cab to the park. When Dr Faith saw her, she almost couldn't recognize her until she spoke.
"Oh my goodness, Vina what happened to you?" Dr Faith asked as her hand bag dropped off her hand and tears rolled out from her eyes. They entered into the cab and started going to the house but through out the journey Dr Faith kept crying and couldn't open her mouth to talk to her.
"Vee, are you sick, what happened to you?" Dr Faith asked again for the uptenth time
"I'm perfectly ok mum". Vina responded
"Or are you having problems with your husband?" she asked again
"Not at all mum."
"Then why are you so lean? Dr Faith asked again with a voice filled with concern but Vina doesn't want to tell her mom all that has happened because she won't permit her stay one day further. She left her marriage and there is a tendency that she will push her into leaving here as well.
For three days, Dr Faith kept asking all manner of questions but Vina insisted and refused to open up to her concerning what she has been through. Dr Faith didn't suspect anything unusual between Vian and her husband because of Albert's disposition as he became so hospitable, nice and treated Dr Faith like a Queen.
Dr Faith spent one week with them but before leaving, she took Vina to the hospital where she ram series of test on her and she was informed that her daughter had chronic ulcer.
"Is your husband not aware that you're sick? Dr Faith asked but Vina kept mute for sometime thinking of what to tell her so she'll not disturb her any further.
