Chương 174: Chapter 171

I didn't make a big deal out of it. And although it was weird for him to suggest we go to my house, there was still something exciting about it. I liked that he felt comfortable enough to choose to go there willingly. And as long as he was with me then I was willing to go wherever he wished. I called Khloe just to make sure there was someone home, I hadn't carried the keys with me and I had being staying with Kyle so much they must have assumed I was possibly never going back there. She was, as expected, excited to hear that we were going. I asked her not to trouble herself by cooking and all that since there was really no need.

" Isn't there anything you need from your place? " I asked Kyle when he locked our hands together and started leading me down the street. He simply shook his head and said he was okay.

" I'll just find something from your closet. Like that graphic t-shirt you bought recently. "

" I knew you wanted it! I have impeccable taste, don't I?"

" Wearing dark colored clothes all the time does not count as taste. "

" Are you hating on my aesthetic?"

" Aesth-.." he cut himself short and rolled his eyes, scoffing before he very sarcastically chuckled, " You need to reintroduce yourself to the concept of color...oh God!I just remembered something, "

He went silent for a while and didn't explain when I expected him to. And when I looked at him it was to find him trying to hold back a smile. It felt like ages since I had seen him truly happy. I mean, he smiled every now and then but there was this honest vibe I got from him whenever he was truly in a good mood. Seeing him like that made me feel lighter. I could stop worrying for a few minutes and just take in the sight of him.

" What?" I seriously asked and he shook his head, urging me to just forget about it. But my curiosity had already been triggered and there was no way I'd let him off the hook unless he told me. He tried to hold back his laughter but failed.

" Out with it!"

" It's really nothing, I just happened to recall a certain ten year old who insisted on having his hair dyed -"

" Nevermind! I don't wanna hear it. "

He shrugged, but then he burst out laughing. I had buried that memory in the darkest corners of my mind. And I had hoped he had done the same, but clearly that wasn't the case. We had once watched a musical together and one if the actors had dyed his hair this deep orange, and I had found it really nice and appealing. So, like the adventurous kid that I was, I basically forced my mum to let me dye mine as well. It had been during school break so she had given in after a whole lot of nagging and convincing. It had taken a total of six day to convince her, but all it had taken for me to want it washed off was the look Kyle had given me when he saw me. It was the first time I had heard him laugh so much. My mum had been there as well but he had literally fallen over due to the laughter.

" You looked really cute, like an anime character.."

" Please stop, I don't wanna be reminded of that! And you told me I looked like a bad cartoon character . I was seriously mad at you, how could you just laugh like that ?"

I was being pretty serious, but my words just made him laugh even more. He must have been recalling that incident all over again. He had apologized after an entire hour of just glancing at me and laughing like a madman, but I refused to hear it. I'd also gotten it off that same exact day and made him swear to never bring it up again. Technically I blackmailed him into leaving it behind, I told him I'd intentionally walk in on him in the shower the next time he stayed over, something I was very capable of doing since knew where all the spare keys to every room were kept.

He somehow had me laughing as well even though I didn't want to. And in times like those I really believed there was nothing we couldn't overcome, no matter how big or awful it was. We got to my neighbourhood not long after. I had given up on walking and insisted we take a cab. The distance was just too much to cover on foot and he was surely going to be exhausted by the time we arrived.

" Isn't that Miles?" Kyle asked when we were about to go through the gate. I turned around and saw Miles not too far away. He was holding a rather large box in his hands as he walked towards their house.

" Should we call him?" Kyle asked but I shook my head. He seemed rather busy and we had already seen each other enough times that day. But Kyle must have not seen my response since he went ahead and called out Miles' name, I sensed a bit of withheld anger in his tone and it occurred to me that he was probably still not completely over what Miles and I had pulled on him. But as long as he had no plans of reprimanding Miles as well then I was okay.

On seeing us, Miles immediately placed the box on the ground next to their gate and rushed over. Then he stopped where we were and tucked both hands into the pockets of his sweatpants.

" This is a relief, I thought I'd have to help you through your breakup starting this evening, " he told me. Then he looked up at our house and narrowed his gaze.

" It's been a while since I saw you here, did you move out or something?"

" In a way...but not entirely. "

" You're so damn lucky! nowadays my parents trace my movements like I'm a wanted fugitive. I can barely go to the next room without them questioning me. "

I was honestly very fascinated by how much patience Miles possessed. If I had been in his shoes then my dad wouldn't have heard from me for at least a couple of months. There's no way I'd have let him treat me like that, even though he'd have claimed it was his duty to make sure I 'followed the right path', it would have still felt like I was being imprisoned and that was a feeling I did not appreciate at all. It would have been like being at school all over again. I watched as a van drove by us, then it stopped right in front of Miles' home. According to the writings on its side, it was a catering business. Kyle was also focused on it, and when I asked Miles whether there was something going on at his place, he sighed, his entire expression falling. Then he nodded and forced a smile.

" My parents are throwing a fundraising for some local shelters. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm all for positivity and shit, but I fucking hate these events !"

" I'm sure you'll manage. Anyways, we'll get going. I'd say have a goodnight but your expression is proof of how unlikely that'll be. "

I patted his shoulder for some added comfort, then I held Kyle's arm and started leading him away, only for Miles to ask us to wait. And when I looked up at him I found the weirdest expression.

" I invited a few guys from school, why don't you two come as well? "

" No thank you! "

The refusal was firm and final. Just thought of it creeped me out. No way was I going to put Kyle and I in such a situation. Even if he had invited kids from school, most of the people there were definitely going to be middle aged and old guys..not the ideal setting.

" Come on! Don't be cold to your closet friend. "

" We're not that close. And if you don't wanna be there then just stay in your room. "

" If only I could. According to my mum it's not "Proper host behavior". As if I took part in sending out the damn invitations to all those ..." he cursed and shook his head. Then he proceeded to explain just how bored he was gonna be if we let him endure all that by himself. And he kept insisting that he needed at least a few people his own age so he wouldn't feel like strangling himself.

" You understand me, don't you Kyle?"

" It's a school night. "

" Seriously?! You're really gonna let me get pulled into a youth meeting with some weird kids just because it's a fucking school night."

I had actually never heard him sounding that desperate before. And judging from the look in his eyes, I could tell that he had gone through that sort of situation before and he didn't ever want it to happen again. Kyle turned to me as if it was my decision to make. And I literally wanted to just say no and let him deal with his own problems, then I recalled that he had always turned up for me whenever I needed him to. Including that very day.

" Miles! What do you think you're doing? I asked you to get the delivery, not waste time making idle chitchat! " A new voice sounded. We all turned to find Miles' mum standing by the van, her hands on her waist and a fierce look on her face.

" So you'll be there? Eight o'clock!" We couldn't even respond, his mum loudly yelled out his name and he quickly turned around and hurried off.

" Please tell me we're not going, " Kyle begged. I gave him a small guilty smile.
