Lycia
Knock, knock, knock!
I looked toward the door, and Tondae was standing in the doorway, concerned. “May I come in?”
“Yes, of course,” I replied, returning her smile. “I’m sorry I worried you—”
“You, my dear, have nothing to be sorry for.” She strolled into the room and perched on the chair next to the bed. “I’m so sorry to hear about your parents.”
I nodded, a lump forming in my throat. “Thanks.” Tears fell onto my cheeks again as images of my mother and father filled my mind.
“Hey....” Tondae sat gingerly on the edge of the bed and gave my hand a gentle squeeze. “I know we’re no substitute, but you still have us. It’s too soon to talk about it now, but you are a part of our family now. I hope you know that.”
I nodded, swallowing. “Thank you. That’s very kind of you to say.”
She nodded, giving me a sympathetic smile. “Can I get you anything?”
I shook my head. “No, thank you. Logan’s sending lunch up for me any minute now.”
