Chương 6: Hint; appearance (?)

We enjoyed a lovely meal as the sun started to rise. Had I known we took an hour with the tour, I'd have skipped the detour. Though it was quite fun, a sense of slight discomfort has been following me since I let Yi leave the scene, unharmed. It wasn't the first time he was spared, either. I guess I'll have to kill subjectively, so long as he is there.

Anyways, it's still quite a shock — grandmother coming out of her room. The old coot is always bedridden, so I assumed she would be unable to make it. Alas, the wells of fortune have dried up. Luckily, the servant's body was discovered.

"grandmother! I am so glad you could make it! I was afraid you could not greet the imperial family."

"oh, my sweet Pangzi, your future wife is visiting today, so how could I dare to miss seeing her. And honestly, I'm a little disappointed."

Awkward, am I right? Well, it's not like either of us want this marriage to go through.

"when I heard you were marrying into the Shensheng family, I thought you would be marrying someone worth your time! Not just some bitch you shared your childhood with!" she said, spitting at soft cake, who barely dodged.

If I were to say anything, my head would be gone in a second, no questions asked. Granny, on the other hand, was able say all she wanted, and blame it on her aging mind.

"how dare you!" screamed the emperor. "my daughter... daughter is beautiful! Whereas your dog-like grandson is hideous! And besides, we came here to annul the engagement, anyways!" he said while spitting at granny.

"uh... father, I thought you said we were going t—

"silence, my beautiful daughter, undeserving of that bastard. Forget everything I said before. We're here to annul the engagement."

"normally, I'd let you settle this between yourselves," said the high commander. "but I'm afraid intervention is needed."

He continued: "the engagement between Pangzi and Ruan Gao was not made by you, emperor, or you, mother. It was made between me, and your father." he said, pointing at the emperor. "after he has died, I cannot help but preserve this engagement that we have built together."

"huh? I thought my wife was the one that made the engagement?", asked the emperor.

"no. Your father visited me on... 'that' day, and... well, you can guess what happened afterwards."

"I see... if that is the case, I have nothing else to say on this matter," he concluded. "grandmother, your grandson is very handsome and smart."

"well, your daughter is quite the looker herself..."

I stared at these two shameless coots.

"well," I interrupted. "I promised to show Ruan Gao around the town, so may we do so after breakfast?" I asked.

"unfortunately, no." replied the emperor. "we planned on staying for a few days, but upon arrival, I decided to leave on the same day. We ran into a sudden disease outbreak in the east. Around the Tian realm."

"isn't that the one next to the Caodi realm?" I asked.

"yes. But the problem is, it's not just the Tian realm that is suffering. Even the Yu, Shuan, Chuan and Di realms are infected."

"those are all around the Caodi realm?"

"that's the worrying part." he sighed. "if the infection spreads to the Caodi realm, it might become a pandemic that is not under the plague demon cult. Worst case, we lose a shrine."

"how can you be so sure it is not because of them? And why would you lose a shrine because of that?"

"because of their ancestor's agreement with ours, and we identified the disease to originate from fleas. And a shrine might be destroyed, because the Caodi realm has a shrine." he paused for a while. "if the disease spreads there, the potential infectees using the shrine will spread the disease to other major cities. And even if we order a level 9 lockdown, some people will manage to slip through the shrine. And besides, the Caodi realm; the Yu realm; the Shuan; Chuan and Di realms are basically 40% of the east! We can't possibly lockdown 10% of the entire world, can we?! The backlash will be too much. Especially when it is not yet time for the phase of plague. The social unrest will be too much, and our reign will collapse."

I just stared at the emperor for a while, and looked at Ruan Gao for confirmation. She nodded.

I guess he didn't become the emperor for no reason...

After bidding the two goodbye, the three of us went back into the hall to gorge ourselves, like we normally do. In front of the imperials, we have to act somewhat mannered.

Sometimes, I think the violent way we eat is part of the reason granny has such bad health issues, but the doctors don't know that. And neither does Shuaiqi.

Well, he might have some hints, but he doesn't usually eat with us. He only eats with the high commander, and whenever possible, I eat the grandmother. But I usually eat alone.

I guess today is just an exception. Both the high commander and granny being here, that is. These days, her health is so bad she only comes out to eat with me every month or so. Still, her health should actually only allow her to eat with me every half a year. Just shows that granny is actually from the Jia's. A monster, even while dying.

To get ten percent, he just divided it by four. Four for each of the planes. It's not accurate, since both the fourth and the four is just an estimate. Anyways, the (?) for this chapter and the last chapter signifies question to the word before it. I'll explain the last chapter's title. So, it said 'cracks (?)'. So it means that the 'cracks' are being questioned. But what do I mean by 'cracks'? Well, I mean the plot. Eg: I saw the bullet, right before it went through my skull. What's wrong with that sentence? If you have a brain, you'll realize that seeing the bullet is basically impossible. Those kinds of cracks — cracks in the plot. Now there, Pangzi murdered four kids in front of Ruan Gao, an innocent person that hasn't ever killed before. She wasn't fazed by it, and acted like it was pretty okay. That's the crack. Then, the question mark, which questions the crack. Is it really a hole in the plot, or just some bs I make up to cover a mistake, is what the title is asking of you. The titles (for all chapters) either hints at a major spoiler, or what is happening in the chapter itself. Still, most people wouldn't look that deep into a mere title, would they?
