Chương 58: 5.06

The residents waited anxiously to hear the result of their solo surgery in their lounge, Helena reading an article. Suddenly, an intern came through the door.

"He said Karev!" He told them.

"Yes!" Alex let out, victoriously.

"Are you sure?" George asked, his voice high pitched.

"Yes."

"You're sure?" Helena confirmed, the boy falling silent. "Good, at least I still have a shot."

A few minutes after, Graciella came through the door. "Stevens! He said Stevens!"

At that, Izzie perked up, Alex asking. "Which is it, moron? Stevens or Karev?"

"This is stupid. You guys are gonna trust these imbeciles to tell you who's getting solo surgery?" Cristina scoffed.

"Is this hard for you? Being banned from the solo surgery? It must be really hard for you." Izzie said, a bitchy smirk on her face.

"Is it hard for you, knowing Cristina not being on the run is the only way you even have a shot?" Helena shot back, not putting up the blond's bitchy streak.

At that, Alex snorted as George giggled, Cristina shooting her a thankful smile.

"He might change his mind. He's been know to change his mind." Meredith shrugged.

"Grey!" Another intern stubbled into the room. "The Chief said Grey."

"The interns aren't lip readers, this is just stupid." Helena shared, focusing back on her article.

"Yeah, this is bogus." Alex agreed.

"You just figured that out?" Bailey scoffed. "You just have to way for the attendings to vote just like we did when won."

"You won solo surgery?" Cristina asked.

"Of course she did." Helena smiled at her former resident.

"I'm gonna pretend you didn't need the need to ask me that question, Yang. Lena's right, of course I won. I was good." Bailey sipped on her coffee. "I didn't cut Lvad wires, put my hand in bomby body cavities or have my interns operate on themselves! I was special. I was young, gifted and black, and everyone knew it."

"Well, I didn't do any of those either!" Helena perked up, a smile on her lips. "Maybe I'm young, gifted and... ?" The girl asked, scrunching up her nose at how weird it sounded.

Bailey shot her an amused smile as she went on. "I didn't have to act like I could read lips. Just go about my work and calmly wait for my name to be called."

Just then, Lexie ran into the room. "Ok, it's done."

The residents shared a look, Izzie looking to the empty spot on her side. She'd been doing that a lot lately, Helena noticed.

"Whatever, Helen Keller." Alex sassed.

"No, I'm serious. The Chief sent me, they made their choice." Lexie told them, the residents getting up on a jump as they ran to the conference too, they were meeting at.

——

"I am happy to announce that the first solo surgery will take place tonight. A bellow the knee amputation, bone cancer." The Chief started.

"No appy?" Meredith asked Helena, the short girl shrugging.

"Choosing who gets the first solo surgery isn't just about who had the best surgical skills, or who's logged the most hours in the OR. It's about the highest from of trust. The trust to put a patient's life in one of our resident's hands. For the first time that I can recall, we had a perfect tie." The man stated, Helena perking up. Even if she didn't get the solo surgery, if she'd been picked second, it meant the attendings trusted her. "My vote had to break it. The winner... was Dr. Yang. However, Dr. Yang is out of the running, so she'll pick the winner instead." Cristina shifted on her feet, clearly uncomfortable.

"Wait, shouldn't the second person win, then?" Izzie asked, furrowing her brows.

"Who was it?" Helena asked, hopeful.

The chief's eyes roamed through the residents, before telling them. "The second resident was Dr. Campos. Now, Dr. Yang will be posting her decision on the OR board at four pm. Also, since all interns but three are still banned from the OR and the attendings need them most, the winner will get to pick a resident to scrub in with them. Good luck." The man wished, the residents scurrying off.

"You should have gotten it, Lena." George told her. "You were the second winner, after all."

"It's fine, Georgie. I think, right now, it's more about punishing Cristina than anything else." The girl reassured him, nudging him as they walked.

——

Helena had a fairly calm day and, as such, she went down to the clinic in order to help out. However, once she reached the doors, she found a line of several people all waiting outside, the doors closed as George peaked inside.

"Georgie? Did Izzie forget to open the clinic?" She asked, placing a hand on his shoulder.

"I don't know, it's still closed and it doesn't seem to have been staffed." The boy shrugged. "I've paged her already, she should be here soon."

A few moments later, Izzie approached them, letting out. "Oh, crap."

"Did you forget to open it or did you forget to staff it?" George asked, Helena nodding along.

"Both." She said, scrunching up her nose. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry everybody, I'll be right back with the keys."

"Get some nurses, while you're at it." Helena suggested.

However, as the blond walked away, the short girl noticed the blond looking to her side and talking, almost as if someone was walking with her.

"Hey, Georgie?" She asked, nudging the boy's arm and making him turn back around to face her. "Is it me or has Izzie been acting a bit off?"

"Huh, maybe? I don't know, I haven't really noticed it." The boy shrugged, noticing the worry in the girl's face. "I'm sure it's nothing..."

"Right." Helena answered, almost trying to convince herself. "It's probably nothing..."

Even while saying it, she couldn't help the worry eating away at her. Even if Izzie and her weren't particularly close, even if she wouldn't go as far as to consider her a friend, she didn't wish any harm to the blond. And, seeing as they had been friends in the past, she couldn't help but worry for her well being.
