Chương 25: Chapter Twenty-Four

"What am I forgetting?" I asked myself as I looked around my hotel room that night. I wanted everything packed that way I would be okay to leave first thing in the morning so I could say goodbye to Mark and get out of this city. As I looked around the room though my phone began to go off.

"Hello?" I answered without looking at the caller ID.

"Hey, you're answering my calls now!" Amelia said, her voice dripping with false enthusiasm. "That adds up to one person in Seattle who seems to be decent enough to acknowledge that I exist."

"Sorry, today was a busy day." I sighed as I sat down on the bed, laying back to stare up at the ceiling. "By the time I saw that you called me it was late so I was just going to call you in the morning."

"Well, you have me now so talk." She told me. "I talked to Addison earlier and she told me that you accepted a job in Seattle. What's going on?"

"I was offered a job and I said yes, but I quit." I quickly added. "I sort of had a meltdown in the operating room yesterday and it started this whole mess. Anyways, the plan is still the same. I've rented a car to come and pick Abby up and then we're back off to New York."

"Clearly I've missed a lot, fill me in. Now." She demanded.

"Honestly, I don't even know where to start." I admitted.

"Let's go with after you dropped Abby off with me." She told me. "What happened after you left L.A.?"

"I caught the first flight to Boise and rushed to the hospital Mark and the others had been taken to." I told her.

"What happened there?" She pressed, trying to get me to continue.

"I tried getting in to see Mark but it was family only. I waited for news in the waiting room and after a day or two I heard that they were being flown back here to Seattle." I continued the story of what had happened. "Once that happened I got a plane ticket and followed them to Seattle, but I ended up being a day behind them. When I got here I asked for Mark's room and basically sat vigil at his bedside. I did that for a little while before I went to check on Derek. He and I talked a bit and I went back to Mark. A few days later I end up getting offered a job, apparently Derek recommended me to them."

"Derek?" She asked, surprised.

"Yep." I popped the 'p'. "Anyways, I accepted the job and my first day I was given a surgery. Everyone must have been squeezed up in the viewing room so they had a perfect view when I froze in the middle of the damn surgery. I ended up getting kicked out of my OR, that night Addison shows up and we have a fight so I left her at the bar. When I woke up this morning I was in my new boss' bed, he brought me to his place after he found me having a meltdown in the rain. So, I decided to quit, got in a fight with Derek, and had Mark try and set me up with some guy. End of story."

"What's the guy look like?" She asked when I finally finished.

"Really?" I frowned at my phone, despite the fact that she couldn't see me. "That's what you ask me? Not why I am fighting with your brother or Addison?"

"Yeah, we'll get to that," I couldn't almost imagine her waving off my questioning of her judgement. "For now let's focus on this guy."

"You're as bad as Mark." I muttered.

"Just tell me about him." She insisted, almost to the point of begging.

"He's a little older than me and nosey." I rolled my eyes as I began to rattle on about the guy who had questioned me my first day in this city. "He's not too bad looking, easy on the eyes. And, sadly, is able to spot loopholes."

"Someone finally caught onto you, huh?" She laughed at the last part. "The only other people who have ever been able to do that are Mark and Trenton."

"Dylan could too, he was just never quick enough." I added.

"Right, so what time are you going to get to town?" She asked me.

"First thing in the morning, after I go and say goodbye to Mark." I assured her. "I told Mark that my flight was tomorrow afternoon, but it's not until the next evening, a little after six. I'll say goodbye to him and then start heading that way. I should get to your apartment late tomorrow night, probably around midnight."

"As long as you have your key because I'm not planning on waking up my ass to let you in." She warned me. "I doubt Abby would want to either."

"Yeah, you both sleep like logs." I agreed. "Just leave me a blanket and pillow on your couch so I can crash when I get there."

"I'll do that," she assured me. "And when I wake up you'll have some questions to answer."

"Looking forward to that." I rolled my eyes. "I'll call you tomorrow, get some sleep."

"Drive safe." She told me before the line went dead and I tossed my phone onto the other side of the bed and, before I knew it, I was dozing off to sleep.

I gripped my cup of tea tightly in my hand as I made my way through the hospital and to Mark's room. It was just after six so things were quieter than they normally were around here and I was glad. Hopefully I would be able to get in and out of the hospital without having Meredith or someone else try to stop me to talk. I just wanted to get out of this city as quickly as possible.

When I reached Mark's room he was asleep. I looked at his heart rate monitor to make sure that he was still doing alright, which it seemed he was. I sat down in the chair by his bedside and reached out with my free hand to lightly shake him.

"Mark," I whispered his name as his eyes slowly blinked a few times before they fully opened.

"Young, what time is it?" He yawned as he pushed himself up some so he was sitting upright.

"Six ten." I told him as I glanced at the clock on the wall. "I wanted to come and say goodbye before I left."

"I thought we agreed that you'd stay until Amelia came to drag your butt back?" He frowned.

"Pretty sure I never agreed to that." I shook my head. "How are you feeling?"

"Tired." He stated the obvious as another yawn escaped him. "You're not really going, are you?"

"I have a life in New York Mark, I can't just pick up and move here like the rest of you did." I told him. "Besides, if I moved here it wouldn't just be my life that I'd be uprooting."

"I miss you Bria, and so does Derek, even if he won't admit it." He reached over and squeezed my hand that was laying on his bed. "At least promise to visit more?"

"I'll try." I promised. "And you promise to stop getting yourself in these sorts of situations, okay? I mean there's been a ferry accident, a shooting, and now this plane crash, what's next?"

"Hey, I make your life interesting." He chuckled.

"I could do with less excitement." I assured him. "I need to get going, don't want to get held up in security. I'll call you tomorrow morning, alright?"

"You better." He warned me. "If you don't I'll be coming to New York myself to teach you a lesson."

"I'll keep that in mind." I got up from the chair and leaned over, hugging him. "I love you Mark."

"I love you too kid." He told me as we separated and I headed out of his room. "Tell Abby I said hello!"

"I will." I promised as I left his room and headed back towards the elevators so I could leave.

"Howard!" I tensed slightly at hearing the familiar voice call my name. I just kept walking though until I saw the owner of the voice catch up to me and they matched my pace.

"What do you want?" I asked him as I pressed the button for the elevator.

"I heard you were leaving today, heading back to New York." He told me.

"So?" I raised a dark brow as I turned to face Avery.

"I just wanted to tell you to have a safe trip back." He said as the elevator doors slid open and we stepped inside. I hit the button for the ground floor while he pressed the one for the second.

"Thanks, I guess." I thanked him as the doors closed again.

"I also wanted to apologize." His words surprised me this time. "I heard what Karev and Mark said before...about you and me. I just wanted to let you know that I had nothing to do with any of that and that I'm sorry."

"You can't stop Mark when he has an idea in his head." I shook my head as the doors opened on his floor. "And, as for Karev, I learned pretty quickly that he's an ass, so no hard feelings there."

"Still, I'm sorry." He said again as he stepped out of the elevator and turned back to look at me with a small smile on his face.

"Well thanks, again." I thanked him one last time as the elevator doors slid close.
